It still bugs me that Spider-man 2 released on a Wednesday. It would have been cool to see all three films break the opening weekend record, like the first three Bat-films did.

Kind of like Transformers opening on Monday or Wednesday. Always wanted to see what Revenge of the Fallen would have done opening on a Friday.

Is 600m realistic for BatB?

That's a 3.4 multiplier, which while on the high side of its comparable is not out of the realm of possibility. IIRC the other remakes have been closer to 3x.

$600m is way more likely than $400m, though. It's got a decent shot at getting there depending on how next weekend goes.

3.4 would be tough, but honestly, what is slowing this thing down until #F8?

$600m is way more likely than $400m, though. I'm guessing it lands on the high side of $500m.

Maleficent and Jungle book are around 3.5, Cinderella closer to 3.0, while both Alice films are around 2.9.

I threw this together from the domestic charts on BOM (sorted by MAJOR studio):

Share | Gross ($M) | # | $M / Film
1 Buena Vista | 26.30% | $3,001 | 16 | $188
2 Warner Bros. | 16.70% | $1,902 | 35 | $54
3 20th Century Fox | 13.30% | $1,520 | 29 | $52
4 Universal | 12.40% | $1,408 | 20 | $70
5 Sony / Columbia | 8.30% | $944 | 48 | $20
6 Paramount | 7.70% | $877 | 18 | $49
7 Lionsgate | 5.80% | $665 | 27 | $25

This is for 2016. I wonder how 2017 ends up...if Disney dominates even more

I don't get why that site continues to list Buena Vista. Disney hasn't used that name for its distributor in years.

The family competition is The Boss Baby and Smurfs.

Do you see either of those having a MAJOR impact on BatB though? Plus, Beast sort of transcends the family genre as there is a lot of nostalgia at play for older crowds that typically wouldn't see a child-friendly movie on a Friday night.

Well, both my mom and my sister have been messaging me offering to go with me to see Beauty and the Beast so that they can see it again.....My GF does not want to see it :/ so I may take them up on it. Maybe if I tell my GF my Mom wants to go with my my GF will then decide to go since my Mom and GF do NOT get along.

Beauty and the Beast's worldwide opening ended up being $357M.

Kong was over estimated by $1M, and drops to $27.8M

Someone at CBS Films also messed something up with the weekend gross of The Sense of an Ending. The estimate was $475k. The actual was $180k. Off by over 60%!

China Box Office: First Place For ‘Beauty’ Still Less Than Best

While Disney’s Beauty and the Beast waltzed to a commanding first place debut this weekend, its opening gross of RMB 289 million ($41.8 million), exclusive of online ticketing surcharges came in under initial projections (elsewhere you may see ticket-surcharge-inflated totals of RMB 309/$44.7 million, but the studio receives nothing from those extra fees).

This figure also puts it significantly under the recent openings of Hollywood imports like xXx: Return of Xander Cage (RMB 435 million), Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (RMB 656 million), and Logan (RMB 342 million).

For the sake of it, how much it'd make using the multipliers of other big openers (the Top 10 OW basically):
Code:
Title Opening	Total Gross Mult	BatB Total
The Force Awakens $247,966,675 $936,662,225 3.78	$660,097,978

For the sake of argument, Force Awakens is the only holiday season release on there, and that time of year is all about legs. The others were either summer or spring releases.

If you're implying what's in that clip is anything less than quality, then you are sorely mistaken.

$13.7M for Beauty and the Beast on Monday. Batman v Superman will get to keep the largest Monday in March title (mainly because it was a school holiday in many areas). I'm expecting a huge Tuesday gross.

Boxofficemojo has been down due to server errors for at least 5 hours. I swear that site runs like a fan site despite being owned by Amazon.

I think we have one

That still seems like a pretty massive number for a March Monday, yes?

Yes.

The Jungle Book made $7M on its first Monday, after a $30M Sunday. BatB made $48M on Sunday, and almost twice as much on that first Monday.

This misses the top 20 non-holiday Mondays, but almost all of the higher films released when schools were out.

If you screen out late December and mid-June to August, you basically have The Avengers, BvS, Revenge of the Sith, and Furious 7 posting higher first Mondays. BvS and Furious 7 came out Easter Weekend, and a decent portion of students have the Monday off.

Civil War's First Monday was $13.3M. Age of Ultron was $13.2M. Iron Man 3 was $11.3M

Those are the closest comparisons to BatB's opening weekend. I would guess that all of them had less family business to boot. Family films experience bigger weekday drops and bigger weekend bumps.

Really insightful...thank you. I expected BatB to be huge...not this huge.

Beauty and the Beast made $21.9M overseas on Monday, bringing the worldwide total to $392M. I'm going to guess at least $460M through Thursday, and around $625M by the end of this coming weekend.

It looks like Power Rangers is simply mediocre rather than being outright trash based on reviews so far. We should get some weekend projections for that tomorrow.

Weying Galaxy Entertainment, a branch of a popular online ticketing service in China, bought a 10% international stake in Ghost in the Shell.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/ne...ing-takes-stake-paramounts-ghost-shell-987261

They also handled the Chinese marketing for XxX 3, which recently made $160M in China. Ghost in the Shell opens April 7th in China. It will have to earn its money quickly, because Fate of the Furious drops a week later.

Triple post, but the Tuesday estimate for Beauty and thr Beast is $18M. 8th biggest non-opening day Tuesday, and biggest not in Late December or Summer.
