Is the Switch Pro Controller worth it?

I'm not as deluded as I make myself out to be
I enjoy the joycons with the grip so for me no point buying a pro controllers.

This coming from a guy who bought an elite controller just so I could be better at FPS games.

My pro controller has a faulty battery. It doesn't hold a charge between sessions. Each time, even after just a few hours of not playing it, it says the pro controller's battery is "depleted" and it doesn't even have the power to turn on the Switch despite being synced. I had charged it for a few hours while playing, and it showed up as mostly full.

The Nintendo support site for the Americas (not my local one but I can't find this page on that one) acknowledges this as an issue that they will repair.

I've played over 100 hours of Zelda with it and I've charged it 3 times, because I just don't wait until my power runs out on stuff, but I didn't need to. I haven't seen it below 50%.

I've barely used the grip. I stuck it in a drawer. I don't need it.

I only use the joycons in handheld mode. I use the Pro for everything while docked. Everything being Zelda, Shovel Knight, and the Puyo Puyo Tetris demo.

Charged mine fully at launch before using it, and it finally gave me the low battery warning yesterday. Could even play for another hour or so before I decided to plug it in.

About 2 weeks of daily use more or less, pretty awesome.

Unfortunately I haven't gotten anywhere near 40 hours with mine. Maybe half that on Zelda. Maybe I haven't been charging it fully though. I'm going to make sure this time and see how long it lasts. :\

I love the Pro Controller, but I was honestly surprised how good the joycons with the grip feel. Not to much of a downgrade.

The light on the top of the controller goes out when it is recharged.

Does the Pro Controller drain battery when the Switch itself is in sleep mode/powered off? Last night it was showing like half empty and when I went to use the controller today it was completely drained.

Pro controller is a must have IMO for Zelda. The only comfortable controller available for the Switch otherwise are the joycons in grips.

I don't know but I don't see why. Mine had this issue but I troubleshooted some more and might have found it was due to using my USB C phone's charger. Did you use the official cable plugged into the Switch, or the AC adapter that came with the Switch?

I've been 99% split handed no grip. Just though about getting a pro controller last week and can't find one. The split hand is the peak of comfort, tho.

i've tried to go back and forth between the joycons and the pro controller. Personally, I don't think anyone NEEDS a pro controller, the joycons are surprisingly comfortable. I just like the pro controller because I don't need to wear and tear the only pair of joycons I have... for now. Considering getting a second one so I can have four controllers. Should be decent for mario kart.

my only issue is the dpad does not feel good, I have resorted to using the analog stick, even in 2d games.

I finally managed to get one of the gamestop website today. They've been sold out everywhere within 100 miles of Seattle even on launch day.

I even managed to find a USB powerbank that will charge the switch as faster than it can draw power. I have to say that I went from not caring at all about the switch to loving it real fast. I really hope that it has a solid life cycle because it's an ideal system for me.

Going to mod my Pro Con with Elite analog sticks next week.

are you going to cannibalize an elite controller or are you getting just the sticks some place else?

is it mushy like a lot of nintendo d-pads?

I've tried both ways.

Yes, incredible controller. It might even be my new go-to pad for the PC, I'm super happy with my purchase.

If it can also be used as a PC gaming controller, it'll be perfect. There would be no need for me to get another DualShock 4 controller just for PC gaming use, especially when the Switch Pro Controller has superior battery life & build quality than the DS4 does, from what I've been hearing.

No, for me it isn´t. It has bigger buttons und a better placing of the stick on the right Joycon but the D-Pad is too "wobbly" for me. The single buttons on the left Joycon are way better. Joycons >>>> Pro Controller. I regret spending 70 Euros on it.

Really impressed with how good the Pro Controller is. Very comfortable.

I don't mind the joycons in handheld mode but found them very uncomfortable separated or in the joycon grip. The buttons are just too small. The worst thing is the right analogue stick placement. That is so uncomfortable and difficult to reach especially if playing with the joycons separated.

I was hoping it would be as comfortable as Wii-Remote and Nunchuck minus the cord but it isn't.

Does anyone know if you can connect the USB-C to USB-A connector that comes with the Pro Controller to a standard USB plug to charge the Switch on the go (instead of hauling the bulky power adapter around)? I know there are risks with using cheap USB C cables but not sure if that also applies to USB plugs.

Pro controller is fantastic, but I still balk at the price of controllers in general these days. The battery life is the big thing that tips it over the edge for me, It's pretty nice not having to worry about batter even in marathon sessions.

I've had no problems charging using a standard USB wall charger with the Pro Con's official cable.

Before getting the pro controller I didnt think it would make much difference. Having it for about a week now, I'm surprised how much it does improve the comfort and game play for me. I don't enjoy playing without it nearly as much, at least for zelda.

I initially hated the D pad on this thing because it was so stiff. I kept dying in Shovel Knight, yet I was fine using the "d buttons" on the Joy-Con.

After a while though, the buttons either loosened up, or I just got used to them. Not sure which. Possibly both. Either way, I love the D pad now.

As for the rest of the controller, I can't really fault anything. It feels great to use and it doesn't start hurting my wrists after a couple of hours like the DS4 does.

I paid $99.95 AU for it and it was worth every cent.

Yeah, been using the Pro controller cable in the USB port of my MacBook or the dock (although the dock USB ports only seem to actually charge it when it's not in sleep mode for some strange reason), and I've also been thinking of using the USB plug that came with my NES Classic for on-the-go. Keep in mind that standard USB is limited to like 5W, and the Switch uses slightly more power while playing, so you will still slowly drain the battery if you charge while playing. Like I lose 7% while playing for an hour and a half, but it tops up just fine once I put it to sleep (except for the dock USB ports not working in sleep mode).

I've been pretty much exclusively been charging the switch with the cable included with the pro controller plugged into an ipad wall charger. No problems here.

Thanks for the replies. At least that is a little extra added value with the controller.

Oh I'd be interested in the actual real world tested numbers for this. And all the new accessories from Nintendo actually. Nintendo's quoted figures probably don't match real world numbers. If this has already been tested I'd like to see if someone has a link

it is mushy, and not in the good way. way too resistant, though I may need to break it in.

Are we going to have to wait for another mayflash adapter to get this controller to work natively on PC?
Or will it eventually be able to work wired on PC with something similar to DS4Windows?

Dualshock 4 controllers don't even come with a charging cable right?

they don't. And to be fair, nintendo's mini usb cable that came with the wii u pro controllers were 20 feet, so it's probably just that usb c cables are more expensive?

I mean, it holds a 40h charge. Not a big deal.
Of course not a big deal. Got a low battery for first time on it though last night, and sitting only 4-5 from TV with a cable the same length is not ideal. I almost pulled the Switch & dock off the shelf only because I wanted to sit back in my chair. Forgot the cable was plugged in.

Luckily theres plenty of third party cables though. And ya, the battery does last quite a bit.

I actually don't like the dpad for Puyo Puyo Tetris this time around. I kept making accidental fast drops. Other than that, the Pro controller is phenomenal and I use it a lot for Zelda and Binding of Isaac. I'm sure the dpad will be fine for platformers too, but it just hasn't been clicking for me for Tetris the way that the n3DS XL does.

The price is personally holding me off, but I feel I might get one in time for Mario Kart 8, and hope we get different coloured joy-cons by the time ARMS releases so I can keep my Switch as wacky and colourful as possible.

Passed on a pro controller twice now cause I hadn't used the joycon enough to make a decision. Now I'm constantly crouching playing Zelda and can't find a pro controller anywhere. Hopefully there's more on the way soon

Mine died on me the other night and I just used the joy-con grip while it charged. Wasn't so bad. Not optimal, but serviceable of you forget to charge for a few days.
