Multiple U.S. companies are pulling their ads from YouTube over offensive material. AT&T, Verizon and Johnson & Johnson’s decision follows other companies here and abroad that will stop advertising until Google can guarantee their ads won’t run before videos containing hate speech. Google says it's committed to working on a resolution, but there are technological challenges, among others.

Figured people here would be interested considering the whole JonTron story. Twitter has also been struggling with the same issue while trying to woo advertisers. Free market aww yeah

For the best. These assholes making the videos do not deserve ad revenue and Google should absolutely be on the hook at coming up with a solution to either remove the videos or easily flag those videos so they can be removed from any sort of sponsorship.

Surprised it took this long. No longer feeling the risk vs reward and roi? On TV advertising reacts quickly, YouTube has had a pass for awhile.

GOOD.

No one to blame but google themselves for not taking a more serious aproach to this issue from the beginning.

IE we absolutely insist on handling everything via automated algorithms rather than actual human oversight.

The scope of the internet, even specific sites like YouTube, has long surpassed anything that would be feasible to maintain through human oversight alone.

Amazing how Google didn't take this seriously or basically said "impossible to solve this problem" when actual people experiencing hate called them on it . . . the minute advertising revenue is affected though they're all "OMG, we're working on solving this!!!"

Shit is about to get real now. Heavens move and planets crack when the money starts talking behind the scenes. I think 2017 is going to be a rough year for youtubers

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
To think corporations will be the one to save us from right wing extremism on social networks.

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Those big meanie companies shouldn't be so against free speech and the first amendment just because of controversial opinions!

Yes? If they don't make any money, then they can't run the site, lol.

Good money is a huge factor, would like to see Patreon take a stance too if many decide that *Youtube is too liberal help support my hate speech* come flooding in.

And the Law is coming to clean up this dumpster fire. I bet this will end up going a bit too far and some Youtubers will have to stop cursing and other stuff if they want an ad to play before their video.

sounds like the invisible hand of the free market is working as intended

You heard that? It's the sound of dozens of libertarians masturbating furiously.

We have an old proverb that goes "Jalan mas un par de tetas que bueyes en carretas".

In the context of this tits = $$$

Guess some youtubers will have to go back to work in starbucks.

Too think corporations will be the one to save us from right wing extremism on social networks.

Never imagined that to be true. Damn.

This. FFS Google. What happened to do no evil?

They're almost complicit in the recent propagation of hate on the Internet.

I'm fairly certain they can find some algorithm that tells them which channels are predisposed to spreading this kind of message or something along those lines. There's too much data available for them not to.

Yup and shit like this means people with money are actually paying attention to what their products are being associated with.

Youtube/google will straight up be forced to correct this.

As of late 2014, 300 hours of content were being uploaded every minute to YouTube. This is an intractable problem without the use of ML.

Wah, wah, so sad. Social media should have thought about this before they got themselves to the size they already are. I'm tired of technology companies feeling they have a free pass to let all sorts of vile shit become the norm and propogate through the internet just because they've failed to architect themselves out of a O(n^2) problem in favor of revenue growth.

How long before Youtubers start bitching because companies don't want to associate with neo-Nazis?

I've seem this TronJon all over the place, but I don't follow, what is it about?

Guy who a lot of people assumed was a good guy based off his video turned out to be a huge racist and white supremacist.

Wouldn't this impact people who put out good content and have nothing to do with this? It's a shitty situation with no clear solution.

I'm just glad the powers that be still feel like being associated with scum isn't economically wise. Sometimes it doesn't feel like that.

ITS ABOUT FUCKING TIME. I like Google as a company, but them and the rest of social media in particular made it fucking clear they have no interest in battling hate speech until it effects their bottom line.

So fucking glad to see this shit starting. And LOL at "Technological hurdles". Yeah whatever, we will see how fast those hurdles get conquered when the money starts drying up.

Google's in a big shitty situation. Good luck to them. No answer will be the best answer.

A start would be the best answer. The hateful nazi racist bullshit needs to go. Start cracking heads of the Youtubers standing behind that shit and watch the chips start to fall from there. This is really overdue. I think we all know its probably not possible to have a human view every video considering how much gets uploaded; but right now what they are doing barely even qualifies as trying, and thats just not acceptable.

IE we absolutely insist on handling everything via automated algorithms rather than actual human oversight.

How many people would it take to monitor 300 hours of video being uploaded every MINUTE? A technology-based solution is absolutely necessary. Whenever people say things like this, I instantly tune out, because it's obvious you have no idea what you're talking about.

It's definitely going to get interesting.

Will companies start employing staff whose sole job it is to comb through popular channels' videos and flag them? (if they don't already)

It could certainly lead to good, honest channels seeing continued revenue while the bigots are all out on their asses.

Who wants to bet Google implementation of this will be horrible

Look at what's happening to lgbt videos being on restricted.
