Xbox first-party is "critical" for Scorpio, says Spencer (Gamesindustry.biz)

At this point I'm hoping they'll give me just one AAA single player focused game to look forward to. Something that isn't a service game, isn't filled to the brim with microtransactions, isn't made to sell Live subscriptions. A one and done game.

If giving their games more time on stage means less talking and filled and no Minecraft demo I support that. Even if it means they don't have many games to show

I hope so. The whole "please welcome this person who will spoonfeed you boring PR talk" for every game has to die. Kills momentum aswell.

Well, the shortage of top exclusives for a while now might indicate that they actually are saving a couple of hits especially for the Scorpio release. :)

Is he talking Halo/Gears/Forza 1st party, or did they bump up the courage to deliver us Crimson skies/Lost Odessey/Blue Dragon/ Sunset Overdrive 2?

I am excited to see how SOD2 turns out, the first one was decently fun but Jank as hell.

GameStop CEO seems to have some inside information on games coming that will make Scorpio attractive to consumers.

http://wccftech.com/gamestop-impressed-xbox-scorpio-powerful/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

"GameStop has expressed to be impressed by Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Scorpio, and the retailer believes that the console will have some great titles that will help drive sales."

"When asked about why the retailer appears to be rather optimistic about the Scorpio, it’s exclusive line-up, and the difference with the PS4 Pro, the Chief Operating Officer replied that the Scorpio is a really powerful console made for 4K gaming. Bartel believes that the enhanced Xbox One console will have some significant great games made for it."

"Unfortunately we can’t talk about a lot other than what’s known”, he said. The Scorpio is “a very powerful system that’s really made for 4K”, he added. “We see it [as] a very gaming centric, very, very powerful unit and so we do believe that there will be some great games that are made for this.”

Yesss Zen confirmed!!! The tides are turning!!!

Curious about something.

Should Microsoft do a seperate hardware reveal, or just a longer E3 conference?

Uhm no, they've released Gear and Forza in autumn last year and HW2 just recently. Fall has been their main season for the whole gen so far. I don't think Scorpio has anything to do with it.

So many words, so little to say.

I think they are going to do what Sony did and have a dedicated event for it closer to release, they might mention a few things at E3 though about Scorpio, maybe a name reveal or more details on the specs.

Why would you ever have faith in a corporate suit? His job is to get your money by any means necessary.

When he came the Xbox one reversed its stupid policy of drm and no used games. He promised to get Xbox back to its original Xbox days where the focus was on core gamers and not "sport, sport & sport and if you want games we have cod and our recycled gears, halo and forza".
There was a sense of hope in xbox that it can compete with ps when it comes to exclusives content and they were actually even better in the first 2 years. Almost everyone believed Xbox was on the right track, but now I'm not sure they're anywhere near that.

What exclusive lineup?

Now that Dragon Quest XI is confirmed to not have the awful archaic battle system of all the previous games, it seems like the perfect fit for Xbox One and Scorpio. Especially if they can get it running at 4K and 60FPS.

Stop. No, it does not sound like the perfect fit for Scorpio.

Dragon Quest sells like doodoo in the West and you want to put it on a system that always has awful sales for JRPGs.

Scorpio Hardware event with some juicy details. Showcase a few 1st party demos running on scorpio. show scorpio box so people will focus on how pretty it is, how power it is and how their first party game looks much prettier on it too. Maybe 1 new game announcement like Forza 7 lol...

hold out on price until e3 where they can go ballistic with scorpio recorded footage of 3rd party games and anything else it may do, like vr.

Honest question but when has Microsoft ever annnounced major titles outside of e3?

It seems like they always do this. Microsoft will announce their games schedule for the next year and a half at e3 and then be silent until the next e3.

The only time I can remember major announcements from Microsoft was when most of the stuff leaked online and they basically just confirmed the info since it was already out there.

All we know about is Sea of Thieves, Crackdown, and State of Decay but it's pretty much a good bet that Microsoft has a decent amount under wraps for Scorpio launch which will be revealed at e3.

I'm still waiting to see how games pushed for Scorpio look/perform on XB1.

His words - and others quoted from other sources - imply games really pushing to console, which is great for Scorpio but given the power gulf raises questions what the "last gen" version looks like.

It's not cut and dried how market will respond. Existing owners aren't going to want terrible versions but Scorpio owners are going to want to see the console maxed.

Obviously just 4K vs current HD might provide enough of a buffer to keep games looking/playing well on both but until games are out for both who knows?

Anyway I don't want to get into "concern" territory and the promise of focus on 1P sounds fine but the time to let the market see the goods and stop talking about how it's all gonna be great is fast approaching IMHO.

Spencer has zero credit by now, but that's good cause he can't go any lower just up.

Hope he delivers on E3 press conference.

When he says 'work to do' from his trip to Japan, I hope he just means to secure Japanese dev support. If he means he's trying to make the Xbox viable in Japan, he's better off not bothering. You get like a literal 130 XB1 sales in Japan versus 20K PS4 and like 20-30K Switch sales each week. Although it must hurt them as Japan is one of the main reasons the gap between Xbox and PS4 is growing worldwide day by day.

Scorpio is a more capable Xbox One, correct?

So when they are getting criticism for the actual software side of things, how is their take on the PS4 Pro going to improve things exactly?

I would love them to bring new fresh AAA games to the platform but Phils words are just meaningless to me, his twitter feed is like recycled guff.

He sounds like a politician.

This. And we're taking the word of Gamestop - a company apparently so committed to their strange partnership with MS, they were willing to embrace the always online drm vision that would have killed them off.

If MS brings the games with Scorpio - all well and good. But unless they've managed to keep several AAA first party titles under wrap for years, I don't expect much.

I'm kind of getting the feeling, based on Spencer's non-answers, that we may not get a scorpio reveal before or even at e3.

Critical, huh?

Launching them on PC does not make the machine that desirable. If I could play Breath of the Wild or Horizon on PC, Switch and PS4 would lose some "critical" points.

Ori 2, maybe? I don't see them investing a lot in that kind of genre any more after Quantum Break was a massive flop.

Sadly, the Xbone is nowhere near the OG Xbox in terms of exclusive software. They had a lot of great stuff back then, from PGR (and later Forza), Sudeki, Fable, Halo, Brute Force (sadly nowhere near as good as it should have been), Otogi, Ninja Gaiden, Jet Set Radio Future, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, and so on. They were really trying back then, and they also went into the 360 era swinging as well. Sadly, ever since Kinect that fire in their belly seems to have died out.

You don't make a AAA game with a completely new IP in under 2 years. At that time, he may of greenlighted some new 1st party titles with new IP 6~12 months ago, ready for this year.

He came into post in early 2014, so if he commissioned a bunch of new stuff then maybe some of it will be ready to show this E3. We shall see in about 10 weeks.

It can't be both?

I keep saying this

In all technical ways it's just Xbox One Pro

In marketing and purpose, it's the next Xbox chapter, it is Xbox Two, Nextbox, the gap is humongous etc.

Only thing is this time there's no hard reset or anything like that, and they don't intend to make the older console (in this case the One S) vanish any time soon either.

How much times do people need to see 'beyond generations' before they get the point.

I'm sick of hearing about how it's going to be the most powerful console ever made. I think that's a stupid way to describe any console. Could you imagine if every phone that come out was labelled "The most powerful phone ever made".... well duh, it's the newest.

What's always? There have been 2 proper JRPG games XV and type zero. One sold bad. One didn't

Contextual difference though, there's a lot of phones going on at once, console hardware is a very small market and you have a much bigger chance of standing out

The Xbox one to Scorpio feels like the Wii-U to Switch.

let's not release anything for the Xbox one and hold everything back until the Scorpio comes out, forget the early adopters....

Wii-U lets hold back Zelda so we can launch it with the Switch.

Fair enough. He was vice president of Microsoft Studios since 2009 though - in charge of first party long before he became head of Xbox.

I guess E3 will tell.

Who is going to make them? We know what almost all of their studios are up to.

Not to defend Microsoft or anything, but why would they talk about anything before E3? E3 is going to be huge for them and they are probably just trying to keep their cards at their chest. Maybe...

They have lost me for the Scorpio. If it wasn't for Fallout 4 my xbox wouldn't be on.

Sony are killing it and I would rather get a PS4 Pro than a Scorpio but they don't come in white yet

Based on that logic, the Switch is the most powerful console ever made since it is the latest console, duh!!! :)

So they started with hardware, overhauling an already good online service and then comes the investment in 1P games?

Why not invest in 1P games first?

Launching them on PC does not make the machine that desirable. If I could play Breath of the Wild or Horizon on PC, Switch and PS4 would lose some "critical" points.

But Nintendo or Sony would still get all your money when you buy the game on PC.

Again, I don't think MS particularly cares whether you own an Xbone or Scorpio, as long as you spend the cash on their games and services.
It's an interesting strategy but does yes, "devalue" the perception of owning hardware to a certain extent.

Who is going to make them? We know what almost all of their studios are up to.

I mean, it could easily be third parties. They have good relationships with a few, and there's a bunch like Human Head, Digital Extremes or Ruffian Games that we don't know what they're working on right now.

I love Ori and will obviously buy the sequel, but it's not really the AAA investment I'm looking for. Just one single player only AAA game to look forward to in the coming years. Is that too much to ask for at this point? It's starting to feel like it is.

So why post in a Scorpio/MS related thread? If they have lost you, why spend the time in a thread like this? If you are contributing to the discussion, then that is great, but obviously you have ZERO interest and you clearly don't want a Scorpio, why not just move on to one of the many PS4/PRO/Sony threads?

So many comments like this make me chuckle.

You guys expect him to present Scorpio on twitter? Of course hes gonna keep his mouth shut. However I do think he needs to restrain himself and not react to tweets asking questions he can't answer.

That doesn't change what he was trying to say. "Every new console -except Nintendo- is the most powerful console" is obligatory. Pro had that title for a year, Scorpio will have it for maybe 2 years until PS5 comes along.

People do realise it takes 4-5 years to make a new IP right? Phil took over 3 years ago, so this e3 is really his first e3 since taking over and will tell us a lot about the direction xbox is going with under him.

He's also been on record saying he doesn't want to show games early so there's that too. This year e3 is when we should start to see where Phil is going with exclusives for the first time. Other than small games like recore and some like dead rising 4, gears 4, yearly forza pretty much every single game we've been playing so far is a mattrick era game.
