Horizon Zero Dawn Looks Unnaturally Good Because Of 'Hyper-Realism'

As a mainly high-end pc gamer this hands down takes the throne as the best looking game I've ever seen. Really impressive stuff. Finished the main story a few days ago and it's also a solid game as such I must say.

This probably explains why the time of day and weather transitions seem so sudden sometimes.

Not sure if I'm a fan of that particular part of this. The most interesting thing, though not necessarily beautiful or impressive, about a day/night/weather cycle for me are those slow "in between" moments where it might not look amazing. Those realistically flat moments that occur between the highlights and give a proper sense of time passing. Rapid switches to and from optimal times of day is, funny enough, less exciting to me.

BBC Earth documentaries continuing to do natures work.

Interesting read and I wondered that about the fast transitions: it was so deliberate I figured there had to be some design idea behind it.

Now I wish they'd asked Attenborough to lend some voice work.

Actually a mash up of his voice work over the machines just going about their business would be terrific.

Ask and ye shall receive, brother.

The right way to go honestly. You nail two birds with one stone, that realistic photogenic landscape, and super stylized charm. Horizon is absurdly beautiful. I want to buy it in part for the photo mode. I've never felt that about a game before.

OP didn't even post my favorite Sunhigifs.

OK, so now I understand the rapid shift in time from day to night is required. Fine.

Can someone elaborate on the reason for the world to appear so 'green' at night...like looking through low quality night-vision googles? It's disturbingly horrid and completely at odd's with the rest of the games visual make-up. I wish they just let nature's light take it's course.

I might buy a PS4 for this game.

I actually did this. Bought a Pro. It's one of the best games I've ever played so it was totally worth it. Especially considering now I have access to a bunch of great other games I never would've been able to play. So, yeah, I recommend buying one for Horizon!

I think it looks amazing and allows you to play even during the night. Not sure what you're on about. Did you miss the whole part of BBC-realism?

It's not going for realism remember. It's a stylistic choice which, IMO is done really well. Strong colours, strong bloom, strong contrast. It's like Oblivion but done right lol

What's so amazing about this game is that the whole effing game wows like this.

Sunhi's the best, too.
Its unbelievable.

It looks better than the most graphics-intensive linear games, yet in a complete open world with day/night cycles and dynamic weather with some stunning lighting effects and a tremendous attention to detail. And unlike most games with day/night cycles that tend to look great under some circumstances and flat at other times, Horizon looks absolutely incredible, always. Even the stuttery shadows you see ticking across the landscape in open worlds as time progresses are fluid here.

And that'd be an achievement in its own right, but that its in service to a meaty RPG with a compelling story and some incredible combat ta boot?

Guerrilla deserves all the praise here. I honestly had no idea they had this in them.

A stylistic choice? Also, because it looks so good?

How is the audio quality?

Fantastic. Excellent use of low end in particular. When you're running under a Thunderjaws legs, if you have a decent subwoofer, it absolutely sounds like it.

Is this what the game really looks like in motion on the Pro? If so then holy fuck! That's astounding!

Better, theoretically. Sunhi plays on standard PS4 (where those gifs are from). Looks even better on the Pro (though Sunhi's gifs still look amazing).

While that sounds amazing, I'm a headphone gamer lol, is the audio clean? Or does it have that muddiness many games unfortunately have?

this game is so damn breath-taking at times I just stop moving and stare for a while. its gorgeous, and I totally understand the nature documentary vibe.

The statement you quoted kind of covers that :p

Really though, the sound of machines walking around, birds and small animals rustling around, the weather, Aloy talking to herself, the weapons and when you land a hit on a key part of a machine, etc. all sound incredible and meld with the acoustics of where you are.

You can be up on a mountain between peaks and your actions will reverberate and echo appropriately.

I love all the little sounds from the player and NPC outfits. The subtle clink of chains in chainmail, the bending/rubbing sound from the leather. The sound of an approaching sawtooth or swooping glinthawk... just dayum.

But I think my favorite effect is the sound of some large robobeast desperately trying to break out of the ropecaster's straining tethers. Just perfect.

Yes! That noise coming from a Stormbird was one of the highlights of the game for me

Hmmm, that's harder, and is usually a function of the quality of headphones. I have Astro A50's for night time and I don't particularly remember those ever getting "muddy" as there aren't usually a lot of scenes where there's a "bass overload" that generally causes that muddiness.

And to think these are just from the base PS4 model...

Absolutely insane what Guerilla has accomplished. Horizon's combat alone makes it one of my favorite games this generation. It feels so exhilarating and satisfying to take on a Machine, test our different modifications to exploit enemy variation, and bring one down just by the skin of your teeth. All of it blends together so perfectly and never gets old.

Yes, no other game has wowed me graphically so far like Horizon did.
Their engine has the best (hyper)natural lightning imo whereas games like Witcher 3 are stuck between realism and "cartoony". The grey when it rains in the mountain areas really looks like a day in the Scottish Highlands. Also best jungle and desert in a game. The audio is top notch as well. For me GG is now officially Tier 1 with Naughty Gods. I wet my pants when I think about what Kojima will do with Dezima.

What does procedurally generated mean in this game? I assume all the "hard geography" is handmade and never changes but placement of trees, foliage and some select rocks are placed procedually?

Yeah. But they'll be fixed in place once the generation is done. It isn't generated differently for every player every time they play. It was procedurally generated at the development end.

Yeah. I thought Rockstar did it incredibly well in GTAV. Has me stoked for RDR2. Horizon still looks phenomenal 99% of the time though, just every once in awhile there's like a couple seconds of "Woah, everything suddenly changed from red to green" or something weird.
