Horizon Zero Dawn Looks Unnaturally Good Because Of 'Hyper-Realism'

I think I remember Gran Turismo 5 having a similar edict. "Look better than real-life" by trying to capture prime moments of beauty, like when the sun reflects off of the surface of water perfectly, and sustain them for longer than you'd ever seen in the real world.

I'm seeing confusion on here on who actually developed the Decima engine so here are a few articles that make it clear that Guerilla Games developed the engine.

They developed it. KZ Shadowfall used an early version of it.

When KojiPro visited them, they handed them the source code for the engine in a USB stick, asked them to use their engine and now, they're both working together to refine and build on the engine for future projects.

In other words, Death Stranding could be a sort of Decima 1.1, if you will.

If I understand correctly they co-worked on the Decima engine together which is supposedly named after Dejima, a little isle for the coast of Japan where the Dutch were allowed to trade with the Japanese centuries ago. Since Decima is also a Dutch - Japanese cooperation it's a nice gesture.

KojiPro didn't have anything to do with Decima as it exists today. This is the same engine that Shadow Fall ran on, although obviously heavily modified. But going forward we'll see contributions from KoiPro to the engine.

Yeah, Kaz has actually talked about how one of the luxuries they have as a game developer is that they can create the weather in a way that makes sure the game always looks good. You can see it in Sport as well

Oh yeah I don't doubt KojiPro/GG will refine the engine and make it better, but I have to imagine that Kojima had very little to do with the actual development for Horizon at all especially since they didn't announce the collaboration until Dec and Horizon released late Feb.

Yeah, GG have been iterating on the engine they recently named Decima for years.

They gave Kojima a USB with the source code when he was on his studio tour with Mark Cerny, and Kohima chose it for his studio. Since then the two studios have an 'exchange program' where they are both working on developing Decima, but the version used for HZD is GG's own, not the Kojima collaborated code.

What will be exciting is seeing how DS & H2/GG's next game will be using Decima.

I think you're right; I think Kojima had little to no input for H:ZD.

Which makes me incredibly excited for what we'll see in the next iteration of the Decima engine :D

Decima was already used in "Until Dawn" and it look quite impressive even then in its earlier form. Not surprised that it made "Horizon" looks this good.

If this is 'Hyper-Realism' then I want MORE of it NOW!

It does look great and honestly I think that HZD is a game that will stand the test of time, I love it.

That's interesting, does this mean the lighting in the glass room is not final? Kojima kept mentioning the importance of lighting when the engine was unveiled.

I can picture Kojimas face when they presented the game to him, he's like aight lets see the next one ^sigh^....

oh....I'll take it.

I think the game looks breathtaking but I have a real issue with the brightness autoadjusting itself constantly. It makes the game hard for me to look at especially when playing at night when the brightness of objects keep fluctuating depending on camera angles. When I stand still it is jaw dropping, when I start moving and playing it is frustrating as heck.

Yeah, it's likely not final. Kojima mentioned during PSX (I think that was the event) that the one concern they had with using someone elses engine was that they didn't want to make a game that looked like those on that engine. They wanted to be able to make one that fit their own style. So, that room is likely them just doing testing to make sure that Death Stranding wouldn't look like Horizon or Killzone.

Game looks amazing on my og ps4 in HDR. It's a stunning show piece for sure. Sometimes I'll pause it and leave the room to grab something and when I come back in the room and see the game frozen on my TV it blows me away.

The bar was set so high (ehem) I hope other games release in the near future tops or least match Horizon in terms of visual and performance as that can only be good for all gamers.

The world is hand crafted but is being generated around the player as you go through it. It's generated the same way Everytime . Or at least that's my understanding of it.

There was another thread on the tech. Cant find it because its on mobile. Basically gurella had a tool where they could highlight an area and say "Draw Forrest" and it would procedurally generate a lush good looking forest in theat area rather then having to plant each tree individually

The thing with this game isn't that it looks better than pretty much anything else out there, it's that the actual content matches that high caliber. Some of the best writing, story, characters, and voice acting you'll have in a game.

I may have to wait to play this when I upgrade to a PS4 Pro. I'm just not sure I can wait, but feel it would give me the best boost from the OG PS4.

I want to check out this game since I've heard good things but I have little faith in Guerrilla Games as a developer.

Is there heavy input lag and camera acceleration/deceleration?

Is gameplay well designed and the most important focus of the game?

If you heard good things, then why do you still have little faith in GG?
You also must have been living under a rock for the last month. There are hundreds of reviews and impressions out and dozens of threads talking about the game here in the forum. The consensus is the game is very good. The gameplay/combat is one of its most praised aspects.

Ask and ye shall receive, brother.

That is so cool! :D

1. No, it's one of the best feeling/controlling games on the market.

2. Yes, combat against the creatures is really exhilarating, and the feedback is sublime. On top of that, the narrative is great; it's sci-fi done right.

This game is an absolute master class in video game art direction. Every frame is gorgeous and there's always something to look at. I hardly ever used fast travel even if my objective was across the entire map. It was such a joy to just traverse the world and marvel at its splendor.

Indoor lighting can look pretty bad sometimes in Horizon. Like in and around Meridian at night. Probably more to do with the game itself than Decima though.
I think the settlements are the game's weakest area, graphically. It's one aspect The Witcher 3 totally nails while HZD falls short.

Well I'd say that most games try to achieve that.

How does sunhi make everything look better? I've also seen his FFXV GIFs which ran on non-pro but I swear it never looked that good when I played the game. Any sunhi Witcher 3 GIFs?

Very impressive game, one of the few in a long time where I am immediately keen on a sequel. Even subtle improvements could make it near perfect imho.

DAYUM! I need to pick this up ASAP! I was planning on playing Nioh first and then Nier, but fuck that! Horizon it is!
It's really something, easily the best looking game I've ever seen, and I'm a core PC gamer too mind you. In fact it looks so great on the original PS4 that I don't see the need for PS4 Pro anymore, I saw it on Pro on a huge 4K TV shortly after I started playing it at home on OGPS4 and thought to myself "Huh? Is that all? Looks basically just as awesome at home." Pretty much locked 30fps too! Guerrilla really delivered on OGPS4, they should get lots of praise for not sacrificing the quality just because more power were available elsewhere.
