10 minutes of FFXII: The Zodiac Age footage from PAX East

As someone who couldn't get into this gane the first time due to being 15 and not understanding the complexities and nuances of the battle system.

How's the story in this game? I hated Vaan so much.

Vaan is inconsequential, people gave too much attention because it happens to be the main controlled character but he's not the protagonist. The story is quite good but it doesn't feature love stories and melodramas like most FF. Also the story is sparse, first 10 or 15 hours and last 10 or 15hs are heavily story oriented but the middle of the game moves the plot at a snail pace. At least that's what I remember.

Neither is, but FFX is superior to FFXII.

I don't think its bad just much worse than FFX. And also completely different from it when it comes to its focus.

Well, agree to disagree, I find FFX to be on the bottom half of FF. :/

The first two thirds of the story are decent enough, up until the fight with
Cid in Archades
, it kind of turns to nonsense after that but I still think it's done better than XV which people make a lot of the same criticisms about

It doesn't ever feel like you get to know the characters as well as the ones in VII-X

FFX has a more engaging story, but I'd never consider it a better game overall. They're very different games. I personally re-play XII almost ever year, but find it very difficult to go back to X despite loving it as a kid.

Can't wait to finally try it for the first time. I'm just gonna go with a normal version of the game since I like the Amano art better than the steelbook cover.

This has to be 60fps. Its a freaking PS2 game.
Not the case for these old fashion games that were designed to run at 30fps and tied a lot of internal and external game logic to framerate.

Mishandling this aspect could lead to another Kingdom Hearts PS4 fiasco.

Looking good. I just wish S-E would use the high-poly models during gameplay in the HD versions of their games. It is not like PS3-4 could not handle them...

Never played it but I simply don't have enough time to add another huge JRPG to my to-do list this year. I'll look to it in 2018.

It'd be great if they could add Vaan's costume from Dissidia.

It's crazy how much difference a shirt makes.

I only ever played FFX (loved it). Will I like this game?

Always wanted to play it when I was a kid.

You should probably tell us what you liked about FFX before we start making comparisons.

If you liked the sphere grid, the license board in XII is a straight upgrade with much more interesting choice and given that this is the zodiac version of the board, more meaningful choice as well.

The combat is completely different from X. No random encounters, monsters are visible in the field and if you're careful, you can pick and choose your battles at will. The Gambit system will take a while to get used to. It's not hard to set up a system where your characters auto attack, cast magic and buff themselves, but the menu-fu required to modify mid-battle or to hard cast directly from the skill/action menus is a drastic change from FFX. You can get through the core game without needing to feel like a programmer and using only the most basic gambits. It's the long, optional superbosses that require you to play the piano on a controller with flipping gambits on and off as your characters will die or be disabled.

The writing in XII uses a much different POV than X. You aren't just some random guy who gets swept up into an adventure that wouldn't exist without him, you play a small potatoes bystander to an active, large-scale political and military conflict with a lot of complicated subplots running through it all. There are standard 'protect the weak' hero moments and as the guy doing all the fighting, you do get a sense of heroism with Vaan as your avatar, but the story isn't about Vaan per se. The protags are much more nuanced in XII than X and even some of the villains have a good amount of pathos to them. Whereas the primary threat in X is some blobby force of nature that just wrecks things in its path, your opponents in XII have obvious motivations and generally human forms. There are parallels to be drawn in that for both MCs you can feel like a bit of a bodyguard/escort for folks who actually possess the required power to stop the global crisis, but FFXII starts off your avatar more humbly. FFX starts by telling you that you're some rockstar pro sports man and that this crazy world ending advenfure is your story. FFXII starts by having you kill rats for a living.

FFXII is also perhaps the single best localized game (into English) ever released. The production values of the script, the cast, the dialogue editing and sound mixing are Hollywood tier, no exaggeration.

FFX's story was garbage-tier nonsense about water polo saving the world from some whiny kid's dead dad who is also a giant evil sky-whale. Calling its focus on plot an advantage over this game is like saying Burger King is better than good sushi because it has more beef.

That low key port beg in the first page. Rather play this on ps4, this is my favorite final fantasy behind final fantasy 11

FFXII plots nuanced plot revolved around Oh my God I cant believe that dude is evil and will kill his dad even though it was obvious from the first time i saw him antagonist who's political story is so deep that it revolves around him taking control of an evil empire.

But wait he gets a bit of interesting development near the end but the main paryy still decides ah fuck it, let's just kill him and all will be be well despite just leaning that it won't be in a full on FFXIII fashion.

Well, not everything can be faux-Shakespearean hogwash with shallow-end of the pool 'political' trappings and unmemorable characters, can it?

Besides, much like XII's story, a Double Whopper is a great bowel movement solution to a constipation problem. ;)

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
I loved Xenoblade Chronicles... If FFXII has a good story I could be hooked.

Combat shares quite a bit in common with XC outside of the topple stuff. FF12 offers far more leeway in terms of tinkering how the AI handles certain abilities and scenarios though(Gambit system). Sadly there is no visual alteration of armor outside of weapons unlike XC(Vaan will always be bare-chested...)

Side content is an improvement as well comparatively, particularly the hunting guild which was largely my favorite part of the game and much of my time was dedicated to it. The world is equally massive as well and gives a sense of an actual society inhabiting it especially in the major cities.

Plotline has highs and lows. Extremely enjoyable setup and some heavy political intrigue, but kind of flakes out at times with questionable forced decisions that caused a great rift among the creative talent throughout development and it kind of shows. Still turned out fine, but I can see many preferring XC overall here.

Pretty much the last numbered FF game I adored.

Both games are often compared like this but I seriously can't see it as well.
I gues the best would be for you to just watch the first few minutes of gameplay in the first city/area (not the introduction which is a little more story focused).

I can't say if the story is good or not. I personaly wasn't hooked long enough, got bored and didn't finish it so maybe it shines in the second part. Though overal the atmosphere feels mature which helps.
But I'd try it again anytime over the next ones.

Man, this video reminds me how totally embarrassing it was for FFXIII to regress to having battles take place on a separate screen instead of directly on the field screen. Objectively a downgrade.

You must really like cringey teen angst and terrible voice acting to say that's worse than FFX. That was Ian McKellen in Hamlet next to FFX.

FFX's plot is Kingdom Hearts levels of incomprehensible. Half of it doesn't even make sense unless you play X2, and it's still ridiculous twaddle about characters being imaginary dead volleyball ghosts from 1000 years ago except if they are demonic whale monsters or are different kinds of ghosts or...you know what? I can't even debate it. I really don't know.

Looks fine if they are going to sell it for $20. Anything more and they could have really worked on those environments , they look terrible next to those updated character/enemy models.

It's $50. I understand where you're coming from, but expecting them to go over the entire world and redo the geometry might be asking for too much. Didn't know they updated the character models, makes sense I suppose.
edit: Actually, that's the Limited Steelbook Edition. Don't see any prices for the standard one yet.

Please stop port begging now. It's banned for good reasons. Anyway I'm looking forward to this. One of the only Final Fantasy's I haven't played yet

Looking forward to finally put the emulated to rest and upgrade to izjs with this. I hope the framerate is good, and not ghosty at the least (emulator). Going by FFX reports, I'm guessing 60fps on PC is out of the question. My favorite offline Final Fantasy, because it somewhat feels like the party and fighting style of my favorite, FFXI.

It's getting to the point where I already wish games like this, Peraona 5, etc were coming to Switch. It's 2017 and I can't play all the games in my bed. Such a travesty.

Get a Android phone, a DS4 mount and a PS4. It works great, have your PS4 connected to your net by ethernet though.
