Kotaku: Fans Are Ripping The Halo World Championship For Its Shabby Venue

Is it wrong to say that most people don't give a crowd about halo anymore?

The gulf between can:go and overwatch events and halo world championship feels like the gulf between the NFL and esports.

Oh my god, those mildly deflated balloons are killing me, they look like balloons from a party a couple of days prior they just found lying on the ground somewhere in the venue.

I find this oddly reassuring. Video game tournaments were born in shitball, Days Inn ballroom level venues and they'll die there if they have to, goddamnit.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Halo is dad's retirement party.

It's hilarious to see Microsoft scrimping so hard this year. It's kinda crazy.

Reading the thread title I thought a stadium's air-conditioning system is failing or something. Wasn't aware that the combination of "Halo" and "1 million!" only gets you this these days.

Yes because you'd be wrong. Overwatch is very internationally popular as is CS:Go. Halo has always been NA, UK, Aus popular. Compare and contrast the events run by MLG for CoD and Gears with this. It isn't Halo as a series. Run properly it would probably still challenge CoD. IW has been one of the worst CoD games for pro play in a while. But MLG makes the eventa worthwhile.

The venue (which again is frankly irrelevant for the vast majority of the audience) is shit. However, for 99.9% of the people watching the event has been great.

This is precisely because it's shit. Get a decent venue and noticable percentages will come watch live.

Hell, the "less depressing" main arena is appreciably smaller than what Riot uses for each of their four weekly streams. You don't have to go big every broadcast, but when your world championship setup is comparable in size and glitz to the PC cafe section of a typical Gameworks...

Halo 6 on PC could give competitive Halo a shot in the arm but god damn after last years tournament and prize pool I thought Halo was gaining some ground in the esports circle.

Disappointing but still not bad for the 4th biggest FPS esport. Doesn't retract from the quality of the competition.

Considering the best esport (Catherine) is done in a corner at EVO or at someone's hotel room, I couldn't care less about the venue where people are streaming a screen.

I see people trashing on the size of the venue (or defending it) but isn't the real story the lack of interest in this tournament for people seeing it live regardless of the venue? It seems like MS is basically using the tournament for a marketing write off for the game rather than rallying excitement that already exists in the Halo community.

I think the last line of that Kotaku article sums up my feelings on the situation pretty well:

No matter how much some companies want to invest in the myth that if you create it, and award enough prize money for being the best at it, gamers will flock to you in droves, its hard to paper over a lack of grass roots fandom with headline-making prize pools.

I have to agree with this. I mean, I am not even interested in any of those games in the slightest and Just looking at those venues and the way they are set up makes me feel like I'd have fun watching in person there.

The Halo 5 Multiplayer is nearly as good as Halo 2 Multiplayer.

Halo 5 multiplayer doesn't hold a candle to any of the Halo trilogy games.

It even worse then Reach ZBNS.

The only games it beats (and barely) is default reach and Halo 4. Hardly any sort of accomplishment.

Halo had a "grass-roots" fandom. 343 is trying to rekindle it by supporting it with significant financial backing. Also, the twitch stream apparently had 80k+ on day 1 and has 30k+ on day 2. 2016 HWC had 100k+. Once again, not bad numbers for something that isn't a MOBA, CS:GO, COD, or Overwatch.

Thanks for your minority opinion.
