Hollow Knight |OT| Cute Insects That Just Want to Burrow Into Your Heart

I was using the d-pad when I first started the game, and ran into the same issues you experienced. The game played much better for me once I switched to using the analog stick. I don't think that d-pad is all that great, I even found some areas much easier with the stick, like the bits where you to bounce along platforms by attacking downwards.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a wired 360 controller that was finally starting to show it's age (stick drift, combined with that awful d-pad had me searching for a replacement) and I got a great deal on an Xbox One pad around black friday a few months ago. I've explored quite a bit of the game so far, I guess I'll just play the rest of the game with the analog stick.

Only real time when the stick is better is for downward attacking on the bouncy things as you also need to move sideways quickly.

Otherwise everything else I find the DPAD superior to the stick. Controls are kind of floaty but workable.

Despite my best judgement during this avalanche of games(and with quite a few from late last year lingering)I bought this. I played three straight hours up until the first encounter with Hornet. What an amazing game!

OKay, I am wondering if I went to the wrong area. I got the wall climb ability.

Than I found a place to use a crest and it opened a door, which closed behind me.

I found the nail upgrade dude, not enough GEO.

Where do I go?

Finished up the game and got 100% completion. Looking at the Kickstarter I'm really blown away with how much they put in this game with the modest goal they set. The art, the music, the cutscenes, it's just crazy. My only real qualm with the game is that I think the combat's just a bit too simple, and the resource balance is kind of wacky. There is just no point where I found a nail art preferable to just regular attacks, and healing being tied to your soul gauge made it feel a little too easy to just fall back on it and rarely ever feel threatened.

That aside the game is just masterfully done. I love the details on the player character, like how they hold out the light source in the dark areas and how they take out and look at the map when you bring up the map overlay. Speaking of, I really liked the twist on the typical map conventions at play here, where you're going in completely blind in new areas until you find Cornifer and then can start plotting out your own progress.

The NPCs were great too,
the fangirl you save who eventually loses interest in you in favour of Zote, the ungrateful Zote himself of course, the bank scammer who gets their just deserts, the Nailsmith that ends up seeking death to his ultimate craft, and the utterly adorable Myla... who unfortunately ends up being the sacrificial lamb to show the progression of the infection. ;~;

I really liked the final boss
the game shows a bunch of Souls inspiration and Hollow Knight himself came off very much as Artorias, but while he was easy I really enjoyed his presentation, and the second phase of his fight where the music shifted and he would continually stab himself at the infection is a really striking visual.

I ended up finding out about
overcharmed
status on my own and I thought it was really clever how it ended up working. Turns out you can sometimes be stubborn towards a game and have it work out.

Game's a real gem, and I wouldn't have even known about it without SteamGAF bringing it up, so I can't help but lament that this will be completely overlooked because of the time of its release, and that's a real tragedy.

Now to wait for the Hornet DLC.

The first thing I do in a platformer like this is check and see if there is varying walking speeds with the analog stick. Since there wasn't, I played through probably about 80% of the game on dpad. For some reason though, the game was having lots of locked directional inputs and missing button presses. Thankfully it seems using the analog stick has largely fixed that, not ideal for how I like to play platformers, but whatever works so I can keep playing this amazing game.

Just got the final nail upgrade and
Sharp Shadow charm, holy shit I wish I had gotten this as soon as I got the shadow dash
. I also went through nearly the entire game without getting any of the
soul power ability upgrades
. Still have a little bit to explore before getting that 100%, I'm mostly struck with how wildly varying progression could be in this game.

Just found out that in the C

singing of the lady
in the P

H
ouse
(or whatever it's called) overlaps with the main theme, even though you don't actually hear the outside music in that given location. Another insignificant detail in the grand scheme of it all, but I really appreciate the craftsmanship in this game.

Does the
Dream Nail
kill people? I just used it on the
Gravedigger
and he disappeared.
It
absorbs ghosts. Though you don't need to absorb regular ghosts unless you want to, they only give 1 essence and it's not needed.

Rickenslacker, did you know
that you can opt to not kill the nailsmith and do something for the disheartened guy? Also, you can just leave Zote hanging for something a bit different.
Still have to do those in a 2nd playthrough.

I've just explored C
rystal Peak
and gotten two upgrades there. Do I go to A
ncient Basin
next? I've gone to quite a few areas including that one before I had the needed abilities so I can't figure out what should be next.

Hrm, after watching someone else play I noticed that Hornet says something when you
meet her in the City of Tears
that may explain why
your Hollow Knight comes from outside Dirtmouth if he was born from the Abyss
. She mentions
that you've been beyond the bounds of the Kingdom and that you are born of TWO voids, meaning that you were born empty from the King in the Abyss AND you went outside of the Kingdom and saw whatever great Emptiness lies outside there
.

Might be reading into it a bit, but I'm not sure how you could be described as having
two voids
if you simply
came from the Abyss
only.

So I have 98% completion rate now. I finally beat the Trial of Fools, I've found all charms, I have all health upgrades (mask shards) and all grubs. The Hunter's Journal is at 144/145 in both encountered and completed, wondering what I'm missing... I think I have all but one soul shard and I have no idea where the last piece is. Do the relics (King's Idol, Wanderer's Journal etc.) count towards 100%? I also don't know where that knight looking dude went, the one with the hood and a shield. I think he was at the Colosseum at some point but I don't think I've fought him or anything. Also, what's the deal with that mushroom that talks gibberish? Can I just go to T

If you're missing a soul shard have you given 3000 geo to that fountain in Ancient Basin?
Relics don't count towards completion.
You never fight the jobber with a shield, if you saw him in the Colosseum last, you can probably find him in that big vertical room at the beginning of the Kingdom's Edge.
You can understand the mushroom if you equip the spore charm, I think it's just lore.
You can bring the Kingsoul to the bottom of the Abyss whenever you want, it doesn't end anything, you still need to go to the final boss.

Hunter's Journal doesn't count towards 100% either. Neither does completing the
Mushroom sidequest
. The missing Soul Vessel will account for 1%, so that leaves one more thing that you're missing.
Do you have 2400 essence? Did you find the key for the Tower of Love?

Also, it should be mentioned that once you get the
Void Heart after turning in the Kingsoul
, you no longer have access to one of the endings. So if you haven't already beaten the game once, I'd do that first before getting 100%.

Oh man, my hands are shaking I just
beat the Trial of Fools
. I got there twice before but each of those times
the last soul twister enemy's orbiting shot would bug out and stay permanently on screen which made the last pair of enemies much more difficult
. That is one of the more intense fights I've completed in a hot minute. It just never seemed to end!

? That's in the

The artstyle is GORGEOUS! Like how can something be SO beautiful?!

I don't play platformers, but LOVED Ori and the Blind Forest. Is this one similar, in a way that it has a nice little story along with fun abilities?

Q1-Q2 are packed for games but I've wishlisted this on GOG none the less. Hopefully get around to it in Q3.

I remember that happening to me during one of my several attempts. As if the fight needed to be more difficult.
Trial of Fools
is such a great endurance test.

Yeah, that's a good one. I missed that completely during the blind portion of my playthrough. I remember finding the room it was in, standing on the pedestal, doing a desolate dive to no avail, and just leaving without bothering to try anything else. Very dumb in retrospect because it ends up being crazy useful on the true final boss.

I just beat Ori and really enjoyed it before playing this, but the tone and play-style they both have are very different. Ori has a much tighter progression path, Hollow Knight has a lot more wandering in it (lots of non-critical path options), with a map system designed to be a little obtuse. I'm not saying this is bad, but it has a very different feel. Survival is something you have to fight for at times, especially when you are a little lost looking for a new save point. Opening up those shortcuts gives a Souls-like sense of accomplishment though.

Both games have some really great platforming challenges, though Hollow Knight has a greater emphasis on combat. The combat is more methodical, based around observing a new enemy type before trying to take it down, some really interesting attack patterns going on. Story wise, you slowly unravel the plot based on context clues and NPC dialogue, lots of neat ideas going on but not presented in the same fashion as Ori, which had more of a storybook feel with it's narrator.

Post Spoiler:
Thumbs up, would recommend.

Thank you for an in-depth reply. Seems this is more Souls-like, and I don't care for those games. But this artstyle is soo good! I'm conflicted now :(

The price is cheap at least, so lets see if I feel differently in a few months. Thanks again!

Combat-wise I wouldn't really equate Hollow Knight to the Dark Souls games; roughly speaking they moreso share the same overall structure, but that series has always essentially been a 3D Castlevania to begin with, so... full circle?

To get to the point: standard enemies often aren't particularly complex and it's primarily (sub-)bosses who aren't straight arrows concerning attack patterns, creating distance away from enemies is far less daunting of a task since mobility (including when airborne) is an actual factor and you have more leniency with healing since the resource for it can be extracted during skirmishes among other means, rather than being limited to refreshing at bonfires. More readily visible differences between the both of them exist nor am I claiming that there isn't any nuance to the combat mechanics in Hollow Knight, but when everything is said and done it's like comparing apples to oranges if Dark Souls' brand of action isn't up your alley.

"Apples and oranges" can also be said about Hollow Knight and Ori, to answer your previous question. Ori & The Blind Forest is a streamlined experience that (almost obsessively) ascertains the player does not miss anything, whereas Hollow Knight largely leaves it up to you to puzzle things together in a world where approximately 60% of it is optional and thus can be overlooked. Mind you, there is still room for (little bits of) assisted guidance if you deem it necessary in order to progress. Ori & The Blind Forest's gameplay focus almost entirely lies in the (admittedly incredibly fluid) platforming, whereas Hollow Knight on the other hand simultaneously fixates itself on combat + exploration elements on top of the former. Ori & The Blind Forest's adventure is akin to that of a storybook tale as someone else already mentioned, whereas Hollow Knight is a whimsical yet gloomy venture. Ori & The Blind Forest utilizes skill trees, whereas in Hollow Knight fleshing out your character's capabilities beyond main skills is done through rewards that need to be sought out. In Ori & The Blind Forest you can save virtually anywhere and liberally fast-travel, but in Hollow Knight these functions have been (sensibly) restricted.

Opposites as they are, both games are still of exceptional quality so take the above as a 'your mileage may vary' comparison dump.

Fighting the controls really suck. Any way to make it not so..I don't know its not input lag exactly but feels like it.

I couldn't find a good time to heal anyways. Too busy trying to jump and dodge while fighting the delay in controls.

If the controls are delayed that's the definition of input lag. What's strange is that you're experiencing it. On my end it's one of the most responsive and best controlling 2d games I've ever played (once they patched the stuttering out). Are you below recommended specs?

Same, I'm unsure how to address the input lag issue because I never had it. I had a few issues from the stuttering but never as bad as some people and then after the patch had 0 issues at all as far as control went.

Also for the Mantis Lords I didn't find the fight hard but rather satisfying. Sort of like Lady Maria in Bloodborne; I beat it first try but it was less hard than incredibly fun.

Maybe I need to limit it to 60FPS? I don't know.

I have the nail upgrade. I just got to keep trying I guess. At least I make it to second phase.

I actually was missing that spell upgrade, thanks dude. Now I am at 99% completion rate. I really want to complete the Hunter's Journal but I seriously have no idea what I'm missing, lol.

Also, is there like any use for geo in the late game? I'm carrying 30k+ but I don't think I can use it for anything...?

Yea...not matter what even limiting to 60 FPS the controls feel floaty =S

Kind of sucks that get hit once = two hits on me.

Why on second phase they don't attack in sync or close to each other? By the time I am done dodging the other one attacks right then and there lol. Thought since they both come I would be doing dodge dodge attack.

But it is just dodge dodge dodge dodge dodge lol.

Watched a video, yeah my duos aren't like that >.<

Definitely input lag.

I really want to complete the Hunter's Journal but I seriously have no idea what I'm missing, lol.

I'm willing to bet that you're missing either
Void Tendrils (lower-right area of the Abyss, I believe there are platforms that you scale vertically to reach a statue/sculpture)
or
Gorgeous Husk (which is found in a hidden passage in one of the homes in the City of Tears)
. Those are two of the easiest to miss IMO. You can also check out this guide which shows all 146 entries, although it won't tell you where all of them are located.

Also, is there like any use for geo in the late game? I'm carrying 30k+ but I don't think I can use it for anything...?

No use at all, just hoard it :)

I may be reaching my skill limit with this game. I can't beat 2nd
Hornet
or many of the soul energy versions of bosses. Any advice on the most OP charm combinations? I've got ten slots. I can't tell if its worth it to go for more damage or more health on most bosses. I can't tell if a combo of
Thorns/GlowingWomb/DefendersCrest
actually does significant damage. I'm just confused I guess.

What are the best charm combos for crappy players?(I'm missing seven charms.)

Do you have any of the
Lifeblood
Charms? One strat for a lot of the bosses is to just equip all of them and then just tank hits and swing your pretty little heart out.

Another that people seem to avoid is using spells. I beat
Failed Champion or whoever
with a combination of charms that increased soul generation and spell damage as well as cutting the cost of soul.

You'd be surprised how many people treat Soul as simply an Estus Flask instead of your mana pool because the spells don't do a ton of damage. Use them correctly and they can prevent you from taking the damage you're healing in the first place. The Up+B spell for instance is actually crazy powerful cause it hits multiple times.

I don't know why I was undervaluing this. Equipping them let me steamroll the areas I was having trouble. I beat the game with 93%. Might go back for some more. This is my personal GOTY so far though. Best "metroidvania" ever, IMO.

I used that Up+B spell SO MUCH once I figured out it was multi-hit. And if you upgrade the spell you get HUGE area as well. It's a crazy good spell. Helped me beat the tar out of some of the dream bosses.

Well, two tips.
First, loosing a dream fight doesnt count as death so you can use fragile stength there. Second, against Lost Kin use the Defender charm. The poison cloud from it will kill all the small ghosts when they are about to touch you, making the fight very easy.
