Great games that you no longer consider fun to play

This is an interesting concept to me, but it's a point I've heard a few people express.

The best example to use is Goldeneye, which is undoubtedly an influential game and one of the best multiplayer experiences of a generation full of great multiplayer experiences, but is the game still a fun game to play in 2017?

Is Goldeneye, played in 2017, with it's awkward controls and poor framerate still an enjoyable game?

You can find counter examples of great games that I think most people would say are just as playable now as they were when they were released, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger etc

For me personally, I think a great game is always a great game, though at the same time I can see how those used to modern conveniences wouldn't be able to enjoy older games that don't look or run as well as more modern titles

But that said, I don't think a great game is no longer a great game because it uses a save system or has an archaic inventory management system or runs at 20fps

What do you think, GAF? Is there such a thing as a great game that is no longer fun to play?

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Donkey Kong 64

There's a limit to how many collectables you can stomach in one lifetime.

I agree with Goldeneye....It is awful to play now. I also think Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Brothers are quite poor now. Obviously, this is because there are versions that just do everything better, while running much smoother and looking better. Kind of ruins the older ones.

Old arcade 2D beat-em ups are pretty garbage nowadays. I use to think they were really fun back in the day, but now they come off as incredibly shallow, inaccurate button mashers

I'm playing Ocarina of Time for the first time on the 2DS and while I can appreciate what makes it good and what made it revolutionary for the time, the controls and camera are making it hard to stick with it.

Banjo-Tooie might be getting there for me. I think it's better than the first but it's so massive and I don't know if I have the patience for it anymore.

I loved MGS2 but the lack of a free camera is annoying. Generally, many 3D games from 1996-2005 didn't age so well when it comes to pure "fun" and controls in general. Those things definitely got better with the second generation of X360 games in like late 2006.

I don't think it takes away from how good these games used to be at the time though. I remember those times fondly and always will. I'm just not likely to boot these games up again.

Almost every classic PS1 game outside of Castlevania: SOTN.

Still got a lot of love for stuff like Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, etc...but, I'm not sure I'll ever play them again.

Skyrim. After 150+ hours and the Platinum trophy, I no longer want anything to do with that game. Ever. Lol.

Mass Effect trilogy. I've played those games so many times now that I've completely burned myself out on them. Plus after playing Andromeda, I don't think I could go back to the old combat. I need my jetpack.

Dragon Warrior 1-4 and Final Fantasy for the NES are great games, but I could never see myself going back and playing them again. Very grindy and slow paced by today's standards. I don't have the patience anymore.

Most Nintendo 64 games are difficult to play by modern standards, especially fps games like goldeneye and turok.

For a more modern example, GTA iii had passable gameplay at the time that became atrociously outdated within its own generation, let alone now.

Super Meat Boy. When I first played it the controls and the movement really clicked for me. Now if I go back to it something feels really off. I think the developers said that it's not a typical physics model and is hand-tweaked a lot. I guess that made more sense to me then, but now I can't stand it.

DnD Pc games like Pool of Radiance that had a seperate book with the dialog. I loooooooved those games, but now it would be tough

MMOs I am putting off until retirement.... which hopefully is about 10 years away

GTA Online. I was in love with the idea of it for a long time, but not having anyone to play with and its busted economy sucked all the fun out. I was even excited for the recent Import/Export update (because I love just stealing cars), but I haven't even done the heist or CEO stuff, so I couldn't get to it. Hopefully, GTAVI will make things more accessible.

TES: Oblivion for sure. Loved it back then but Skyrim is clearly the better game imo even tho I didn't spend as much time with it. Funny enough I had no problems going back to Morrorwind.

Oh man, Goldeneye. I played that again a couple of years back.

Old fans need to avoid playing it, and enjoy the rose tinted glasses. It is not good.

The only games I really have trouble going back to are the old 2D RPGS like FF6. I just can't for the life of me finish them.

Nostalgia brings me back but I spend 3-4 hours and I'm totally done.

Mass Effect 1. 2&3 still hold up pretty well but one is pretty rough at this point. Devil May Cry 1 is another game that I don't think holds up very well. N64 AKI wrestling games just don't do anything for me anymore either.

Yeah Goldeneye is one of those games where you just hang on to the memories. I still think there are elements people could appreciate today, such as the mission-based structure and level design.

I've played all three Dark Souls games and enjoyed them (all three would be on my top ten list of their respective years)... but I never want to play them again.

Damn seeing Super Meat Boy and RE 4 n this thread hurts my heart. For me I'd rather not go back and play the PS2 GTA games, like I'm good.

I'd argue that Goldeneye is still a solid single-player FPS, and that it was never a truly good multiplayer one (just one that everyone had easy access to).

I'd also argue that Super Meat Boy was never great.

Old arcade 2D beat-em ups are pretty garbage nowadays. I use to think they were really fun back in the day, but now they come off as incredibly shallow, inaccurate button mashers

definitely disagree with this

The good arcade releases in the genre are still a lot of fun to learn to 1CC. I can't turn on my PS4 without putting a credit or two into Renegade, and that's as early as it gets.

I didn't play GTA3 but I played Vice City and then San Andreas for the first time in 2013 and while the shooting mechanics are pretty bad I felt that overall both games were still fantastic

I can see how someone used to playing modern open world games would find it hard to go back to those systems, but that doesn't mean those games are no longer great games

Final Fantasy 9

It aged badly imo.

I played the PS1 version of this a few years ago as well, and again, other than the long loading times before each battle, I found the game to be a lot of fun

Same with me. It just doesn't feel good to play

TLOU, great game but I never had fun playing it.

I dreaded every second of it but I think that was the point. For me at least

I think the last time I played goldeneye was about 6 years ago and I thought it was still great.
I always liked the controls and never could really adapt to the dual analogsticks laysout, I am mainly a pc player when it comes to shooters.

ShadowTower and Echo Night by From Software. The idea of shoulder buttons as camera movements is beyond me. Same with King's Field.

The games would be a lot better had someone integrated the appropriate controls.

Onimusha is awesome, but the d-pad issue makes it hard. It would be awesome had someone thought about using the analog sticks.

SFV. I honestly love how the game plays but it's surrounded by such shit I can't be arsed to play it. I haven't played it since August and don't feel I missed out by not even trying out Season 2. This game should've been treated by Capcom better.

It's really tough to stomach a lot of N64 games nowadays, between the framerates for a lot of them and the controller. OoT and MM are genre defining classics, but I have no interest to go back and play them on their original console (except for seeing the Ganon fight with the original lighting).

Also, I put something like 300 hours into Oblivion, but I can't imagine going back to that and dealing with the absolutely fucked leveling system.

pains me to say it, because it's my favorite game.

Symphony of the night is way too damn easy, i have to come up with self imposed challenges like no armor/no hp potions/no magic just to have a little of difficulty

Devil May Cry 1.

That's not to say I won't ever play it again. Sometimes it's worth it for the atmosphere and nostalgia, but boy, fixed camera angles in a clunky action game. What the actual fuck.

As the bar is raised older titles lose their luster. That's just the way it is, and the reason many games don't age well.

I would have no interest in playing older Mortal Kombat games, or the original Ridge Racer today. 2D side scrolling beat 'me ups from the 16-bit era are boring today.

I'm just too used to modern game design I think, where you can change difficulty at any time and save everywhere.

Random battles is also something I really hate now.

Mine's a bit recent.

I considered Horizon ZD pretty great but after playing Nier Automata, it doesnt feel as great anymore. Aloy runs and dodges so slowly and even her mounts dont really make her that much faster. There is some redundant stuff when it comes to equipment and HUD is pretty busy looking but thankfully customizing that helped.

Story and characters are aces though but the more gamey aspects of it just feel lacking after NA, to me at least.
