Trump moves decisively to wipe out Obama’s climate-change record

President Trump will take the most significant step yet in obliterating his predecessor’s environmental record Tuesday, instructing federal regulators to rewrite key rules curbing U.S. carbon emissions.

The sweeping executive order also seeks to lift a moratorium on federal coal leasing and remove the requirement that federal officials consider the impact of climate change when making decisions.

The order sends an unmistakable signal that just as President Barack Obama sought to weave climate considerations into every aspect of the federal government, Trump is hoping to rip that approach out by its roots.

“This policy is in keeping with President Trump’s desire to make the United States energy independent,” said a senior administration official who briefed reporters on the directive Monday evening and asked for anonymity to speak in advance of the announcement. “When it comes to climate change, we want to take our course and do it in our own form and fashion.”

Some of the measures could take years to implement and are unlikely to alter broader economic trends that are shifting the nation’s electricity mix from coal-fired generation to natural gas and renewables. The order is silent on whether the United States should withdraw from the 2015 Paris climate agreement, under which it has pledged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions between 26 and 28 percent by 2025 compared to 2005 levels, because the administration remains divided on that question.

Energy independence... With Coal.

Uhuh. The problem with these orders is a lack of continuity. His successor could just impose restrictions again.

I knew it was coming, but I'm still shocked by how every decision Trump makes is the most evil option available.

I guess Trump needs a small victory to make himself feel better after all those embarrassing losses from the past couple of weeks. It's not like anyone is going to opposed him on this.

I have to say, I'm kinda looking forward to South Florida not existing forty years from now.

Please tell me what fucking jobs this is going to create. Someone please ask these fucking ghouls that support this, what specific jobs and how many this will create.

Well, climate change is still a major problem, but if it helps put you guys at ease, Trump's push for coal is bullshit, mostly because its not economically feasible. He's feeding his followers the crap they want, knowing full well that those coal jobs aren't coming back.

Wind and solar farms are springing up more and more, not because it saves the environment, but because its becoming more and more economically efficient to create energy this way.

This is true. And even some of the big coal people know this too.

Coal is dying, renewables are just about to pass fossil fuel in terms of affordability, the whole world is moving to cleaner renewable, electric tech, it's created thousands of high paying jobs but by all means let's do fucking oil and coal. If the greenhouse gas doesn't get us the economic decline will. And those idiots who want it will be lucky to have health care when they're dying in the streets with only opium to feel alive.

Trump's idiotic decisions won't do much to change the fate of coal. Most municipal power companies have had plans in the works to phase out coal for a while and nothing he does will stop that progress. It makes too much financial sense for these power companies to switch to renewables, its going to be cheaper in no time.

Note that it says that some of the measures he hopes to implement could take years to implement.

Meaning that more local activism on climate is more important than ever right now.

No matter what Trump says, he can't bring coal back. With renewables becoming more and more cheaper, more and more people are moving towards them.

More and more countries are joining the Paris Agreement as well.

Also look forward to the March for Science this Earth Day. I hope that whatever Trump does only energizes the people attending. And don't give me any of that: "The march won't matter" bullshit.

Local activism like this ALWAYS matters.

So don't give up hope.

The planet will be fine, humanity will be killed.

this is the hardest thing to get people understand. Earth gives no fucks about climate change. The place just becomes unhabitable for humans. We are going to hurt in the long run. Dirty water, contaminated seafood, heavy smog.

Yes yes yes.

Resist and all that. We have absolutely already seen positive results from our efforts protesting and calling representatives. They want us to feel helpless... but we are not.

A few decades from now, when the world is choking with each breath, Democrats will push for a program that mandates an air purifier in every household and Republicans will veto it, claiming clean air is capitalist privilege, not a social right.

The rest of the world is doing something about climate change. I suppose we will become china, factories will kill our environment to skirt regulations everywhere else.

I feel like these stupid nationalists see something being done through international cooperation and they just choose to do the complete opposite.

Why does Trump hate Earth so much? He should move.
He's 70, fat, eats like shit, and doesn't exercise. He'll be dead long before the effects make things really bad. His plan is to make himself and his crony friends plenty of money in the meantime.

He's definitely doing this to spite Obama after failing his health care plan and his Muslim ban twice.

Is there any way he can fail this one? I hope Trump never stop taking the Ls throughout his presidency

His first failure is trying to bring back coal jobs. And his second is the amount of lawsuits he will get.

Red states will continue to get fucked the worst. Oh well.

Sorry to those who didn't vote for the asshole and have to continue to deal. But hopefully his voters feel it in the worst way.

Just fucking ridiculous.

Doubtful.
The GOP can disagree on how much they want to fuck over people, but all of them clearly don't give a shit about the environment.

This is my worst fear about Donald.

He has nothing left to live for. He could screw up in a big way and not deal with the consequences.

"Survive a nuclear war? Pfft, I'm going to die anyway. Fire missiles".

It's absurd how just cutting a little bit more than 20% meets such resistance in the USA. They will stay the worst offender per capita in the Western world.

Especially the cuts are about production and not consumption skews it even in favour of the USA.

When you hate a black man so much you need to destroy the earth just to express how much you hate him for being black
