While Upper is a port to Naomi hardware, the version released on Dreamcast, saikyo dojo, or whatever is based on the original CPS II game, I think.
It's sort of backward, but the DC version is the same code as the Naomi version. You can use a VMU with Dreamcast data in the Naomi version. It was released on DC first, and does have significant gameplay differences from CPS2, primarily spacing in stages. Technically it makes the DC version 'arcade perfect' in terms of gameplay - to a whole other arcade game (Upper). PSP version maintains these changes, GBA is obviously a completely different thing but does too.

Ultimately every version is based on the CPS2 original, but Saturn is the closest. If run at 'arcade' setting it has the same spacing, just the graphics cut off at the sides. It has a couple more animation frames in some places than the arcade, and adds in all the bonus home version characters, so it's really the ultimate version, CPS2 gameplay, plus all bells and whistles.

The sound quality for the sfx is a little worse in the Saturn release, but the music quality is easily the best of any version. All things considered, I also prefer the Saturn version to everything else.

Think I must be in the minority in thinking that presentation and roster aside, Zero 2 is a far more solid feeling and balanced game than Zero 3. V-ism pretty much breaks the game and turns Zero 3 into something that doesnt even feel like SF at times.
It still produced one of my favourite fights between Alex Valle and Daigo though. Please excuse the poor quality, not sure if the is better about.

This might be kind out there but: Is there any way to make the Wii U's emulation of the Wii look normal on a PC monitor?

I mean, I can play as it is, but it is also objectively ugly taking that emulated 480p stretched across 1080p with plain ol bilinear interpolation.

It'd be cheaper to buy a CRT and lower the Wii U's display mode, wouldn't it?

not sure what you mean by "look normal" but the WiiU doesn't have analog video output that I'm aware of.

It's still a 480p or 480i signal going to your tv, it's never going to look great.

Yeah I was wondering if any upscalers took 480p from HDMI. They're all analog, then?

Hey guys,

US Sega CD and Saturn longboxes suck.

European ones are so much better
You mean the ones with the exposed artwork and crappy clam shell design? I might rate euro Saturn Games as the number one worst designed boxes of all time. Certainly up there with 3D0 at least

Sorry for the slight delay. I was at a drug class all last week and then found out that ALL post offices are closed on the weekend up here...so went out Monday. Still arrived rather quick enough.

At least they don't crack and get filthy just by looking at them.

My euro PAL Saturn games look pristine today. My SCD/US Saturn games? LOL

I love longboxes. I wish that playstation had stuck with the wax coated cardboard longboxes that were being used before jewel cases. I wish that sega had used those for saturn as well. Those are the best, and hold up the best. No peeling labels like the hard black plastic clamshell ones by playstation:

These ridged monsters are the worst. The glue for the labels always peels at the top and there's always wear on the reverse cover.
psx-doom_plastic_variant.jpg

The "flat cardboard" variants almost always have held up the best. Unless they get crushed or a price sticker was ripped off with the artwork, these are often in better shape than most NES or SNES boxes.

This is a really great resource to see all the variants for Playstation Longboxes. Collecting them can be fun, but they're really hard to find, but fortunately not really very expensive yet.

Midwest Gaming Classic this weekend in milwaukee. I"m pretty excited. I think I'm going to just be browsing for interesting Playstation 1 and Saturn games.

A seller "cerulean games" posted a youtube video of what they're bringing and I was interested in Ultimate MK3 on Saturn and Galaxy Fight. Also he has powerslave on playstation which is worse than the saturn version I have, but i also am interested to see the difference and I love that game.

Post some interesting playstation 1 games that don't get mentioned or get overlooked if you like.

I'm looking for that floating runner game that david posted a while back. And jumping flash 2.

I wouldn't want all games to come in longboxes, but I enjoy their novelty. I've always thought the PS1 cases with the ridges were the coolest. Never actually owned a PS1 longbox game, though; nor do I have much interest in any PS1 games that came in a longbox.

Careful with the Saturn version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. It has really annoying load times. And if you're main is Shang Tsung, his delay in morphing is brutal.

Nah, a lot of people like Zero 2 better. I count myself among those people, though I love both Zero 2 and 3.
I vastly prefer Zero 2. 3 took too much influence from the Marvel Vs games, it's fast, flashy and IMO silly. It also has a crap announcer blabbing on and techno banging away as a soundtrack. Whereas Zero 2 is the ultimate evolution of the Street Fighter II formula, with a killer understated jazzy rock soundtrack packed with awesome SF2 remixes.

Both have awesome stage art and graphics however. And Obviously Zero 3 has some great exclusive characters.

Vanilla Zero 2 is below Zero 3 but Zero 2' is better imho
That's a really weird thing to say, Zero 2 and dash are basically identical, just a bonus character and some minor tweaks, and Zero 3 is a completely different kind of game.

Vanilla Zero 2 is my personal favourite, if for no other reason than the recoloured stage select in dash annoys me.

I love Alpha/Zero 3. Its the one fighter that got me back into the genre. I'd gotten bored of the genre in the mid 90's and didn't really touch anything outside of Marvel Super Heroes (which I still love to this day) and the promise of all the classic characters returning + world tour mode sold me instantly. Of course anyone that was in the UK at the time (and couldn't import) had to put up with the inept Virgin Interactive who constantly delayed the game for months on end... I still remember finally getting the game finally.
Since then I've imported the Saturn version (got it before it got real expensive), imported the Saturn ports of the Marvel Vs series and of course got a ton of DC fighters from Capcom (I love MvC2 and the Capcom Vs SNK games!)

I find Zero 2' more balanced/enjoyable than vanilla and I spent so much time with Zero 3 back in the day that I have a very fond memory of it. So the choice (for me) is always between Zero 2' or Zero 3 (weirdly enough, I never play my DC copy of SFA3 nor the PS2 anthology version.. I'm not even sure I fired up that one even once)

I'm going for a complete set someday and it's one of the games I had when Saturn was out. It's still a really good version. And I love umk3. I played a ton of it when that Xbox live arcade version came out. I got pretty good with reptile juggle combos.

The combo system and juggles in umk3 are so fun.

Since the PS4 port came out while I was moving I now just downloaded the PS4 port of Nam-1975. Wow...fantastic job! Both regions, full button-mapping which is perfect for sticks to get that dash button where it belongs, many video options including a roll, and a cool way to actually extend the horizontal FOV. And feels snappy!

Framemeister takes it. However, there's not much you can do to fix the funky vWii scale on Wii U. Even @ 480p output the Wii U is warping the image.
RIP

It looks pretty good on the gamepad but it's just kinda tiny for Wii games. Not the same as playing GBA on there. Maybe finding a cheap-ish 20-some inch CRT is the way to go.

All I hear you saying is that SFA3 is a little too awesome. <3

I'm guessing you're not into the Marvel vs series.
i gotta be honest and say the voice announcer for alpha 3 turned me off. i liked the asian accent voice announcer with little echo effect in alpha 1+2. plus the opening music for each battle set the mood perfectly =P

I had an AES at launch and a dozen odd games. These first low-meg games like NAM, Magicial Lord, FF, Last Resort, Blues, Cyber-Lip and Andro Dunos will always have a very special place in my heart.

NAM-1975 is easily my favorite arcade game of all time. Grabbing the port on Switch next week for portable fun.

Marvel series is fine, Zero 3 is stuck awkwardly between normal SF and vs gameplay. It doesn't have the extra screen height, character swapping and big moves, but has the speed and 'jerkiness', the combo systems have been re-done in vs style.

Hey I still like Z3 for what it is, but Zero 2 is peak classic Street Fighter. Second best Street Fighter game after 3rd Strike (third is 2nd Impact).

Damn... you were the rich kid on the block! i had a chance at an AES in middleschool. i was going to buy a SNES and a guy was trying to sell his AES with magical Lord and Nam 75 (and i think baseball stars) for $199 to me bc the shop was low balling him. i balked bc i was a little kid and was concerned i couldn't afford to buy another game for the system. ended up buying the snes. lol

i posted hopeful/waiting for Last Resort on the neogeo Switch thread =) i love old school shooters.

Yeah. One of the best even if brutally cheap. Simply for the tone and vibe. It got an official gorgeous 240p port on JPN Wii VC. The one I use. There was also an official port on the shit Neo Geo X Gold. Trashy port.

I have my eye on a Neo SD. Seems like a fun cart to have.

Nah, not the PS1 version.

Actually, weren't both of the console versions pretty bad? I know the Saturn had a ton of slowdown. Always wanted to get the PCB for that game.

The PS1 version has slightly less slowdowns than the arcade (made obvious if you compare the bulldozer section in the city stage) and beside being arcade perfect, includes an arrange mode with shield item and (bad) arranged soundtrack.

Another mark against the Saturn port is that it simply doesn't boot on certain revisions of the console, don't think that applies to the American version though.
Apparently there was a second pressing to address the issue but no way of knowing which print it is by looking at it. I was quite relieved when my copy played ok.
The Japanese Saturn box art is absolutely beautiful though...

Im sure GBA on the game pad is a step up from the tiny screen, but I wouldn't use it for gamecube. Chroma shift, compression, and washed out details. As far as a CRT goes, IDK if 480i resolves what the WiiU is doing to the vWii.

I only ever use the game pad to give my Plasma TV a break from static HUD elements on long play sessions.

Wait, seriously? That's the first I've heard of this.

And if so, I will be buying a copy of In the Hunt in the very, very near future.

Really? It seems pretty similar to other Street Fighters. No chain combos or dedicated launchers or aerial rave stuff going on, just fairly standard links into cancels.

The variable combos are just the custom combos from Alpha/Zero 2.
