I made a quick album of panels where Guts appears in the same chapter that's covered in the first episode. Perhaps in hopes of highlighting the differences to new comers and getting them to read the manga lol.

Ok apparently I was confused, I have seen the MOVIES, not the new anime series. I was wondering why people were talking about seasons and stuff, makes more sense. I didnt realize there was a new series, my apologies

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Interesting, I just remember the animation being very poorly done, with lots of repeated frames and cheap stuff like that. I mean I wasn't expecting Samurai Champloo levels of animation but man it was pretty bad. I figured it would have even more cut out than the movies since it is just like a season of 22 minute episodes

The animation is probably the weakest part of the 97 anime however its incredibly faithful to Berserk in a lot of ways even if changes things here or there. The music is a stand out and is still incredible to this day. The dub cast is one of the best around especially for back in the 90's. Even the animation is better than the shitty new series in my opinion as despite there being a lot of panning shots over still images with sound effects and music, it also had shots like this:

The 1997 anime was an example of a talented team working around the limitations of small budget.

This anime is an example of a....less talented team not even trying to work around their budget issues.

Also, I'm only 2 minutes into the first episode and already I'm having a good laugh.

Wait, I didn't realize this when I was watching but why is Casca sleeping on the stone floor?

I'd rather see this get reenacted using sock puppets than this shit. Hell, I'd rather have nothing.

You've had a whole previous season to judge this anime adaption worthy of your time yet here you are still watching still complaining. You love this adaption.

I had forgotten how terrible this show is. IT's not even just the shoddy CGI, but the awful babby's first CGI camera movement. It's like they WANT to call attention to their crap CG.

Also realized I don't like this Guts's voice at all.

I'm hate watching a thing because berserk at it's worse is still berserk.

Exactly Anung so take what you can get. At least these people actually gave a fuck about Berserk to spend the time and money to make a anime adaption. No one else gave a fuck. I'm 34 and its been a very long time since I was buying those 1997 anime english releases hoping my support would translate to seeing further Berserk past the Golden Age animated and no one bothered to make shit so I'm not gonna knock these people's work because at least they give a damn.

I'll be honest I wonder if Miura even gives a fuck. I sometimes wonder if he just signs off on these things because people are bugging him to adapt the manga to other mediums and he's like,"Whatever, I'm drawing for 20 hours a day make a Berserk connect 3 game and pay a bunch of Loli people to make an anime for all I care."

Oh my god, the Guts Zodd fight scene is nauseating. I'm honestly impressed that the director learned absolutely nothing from the last season.

If people were bugging him that much to adapt I wouldn't have had to wait 20 years to see black swordsman story arcs animated.

So Guts apparently lost his sword fight with Zodd. And rather than kill him like he easily could right now, Zodd instead does nothing. Also, what happened to his sword being cracked?

I don't even know what just happened here.

Well, first episode out of the way. I'll watch the second tomorrow.

Boy you guys are making this sound dire. You'd think the most high-regarded manga, like, ever would be able to nab itself a really good anime adaptation.

Are any of the animes really worth seeking out? Are the movie good apart from the cgi? Or should I just get ahold of the manga or forget about it?

I don't think a highly regarded source material guarantees anything beyond convincing investors to get the thing made. If the talent involved can't do a good job, then that's a wrap.

Watch the movie trilogy and read the manga. I would say watch this series as well.

90s anime is great, movies are good but kinda chopped up so you lose out on some important character development. The movies also get better in terms of CG as they progress.

But both of these cover the same arc. This anime series (2016/2017) is the first time we have seen the Berserk series adapted past the Golden Age arc which makes it even more disappointing... it's all we have in the animation department.

They really did it.

This looks positively, completely, absolutely, insultingly, ferociously god-awful.

I salute the poor bastards that voluntarily endure this crap.

Believe me, this anime is dire. It honestly has all the quality of a video-game based movie, and not one of the entertaining ones like Mortal Kombat 1 or Silent Hill 1. It's more along the lines of Silent Hill: Revelation, or one of Uwe Boll's films. The only way I'm getting some enjoyment out of it is by treating the whole thing as an unintentional joke.

The 1997 Berserk anime, while rather dated in its animation, is actually a decent show. It has good direction, good pacing, makes some deviations but still stays mostly faithful to the material of the manga that it adopts. Most of all, it actually manages captures the feel and tone of Berserk, which this anime completely fails at. I'm talking about the atmosphere, character development, and emotional quiet moments, all of which are completely absent from this anime but are done decently in the 1997 one. My recommendation would be to watch that show and then read the manga from beginning. I've never seen the movie trilogy, so I can't comment on that. I somehow doubt it's worse than this anime, though.

This new series looks fine to me, but I am easy to please. Only gripe I have is it skips a lot of side stuff that added a lot to the manga.

I'm treating these like a joke at this point, so in that regard they're pretty great.

The saxophone when Guts is thinking of Griffith had me dying.

Holy Fuck, who seriously thought that Jazz was a good idea. Like it's baffling to think that not a single person realized how out of place it is. I really hope that this isn't this season's version of Hai-Yo in that it's the only song they play because I can just imagine Guts fighting Grunbeld with a saxophone playing in the background.
