100% truth. I was looking forward to this, but I wanted the orignal Power Ranger designs - which still work IMO - of course they can modernize the Zords and have to take the enemies that resemble ordinary animals or household items away - when I want to watch a movie that only use a bit similar designs I can watch one of the tv shows.

I don't get why more studios don't learn from Marvel about this when it comes to adaptions being faithful. If their is one thing Marvel does right it's making sure that the characters looks like you'd expected a live action version to look.

Like can you imagine how hyped people would be if they had actually stuck to the iconic original look ! They wouldn't even to update them since the current comic book from Boom! Studios proves that those designs still work even today and can be incredibly bad ass when used properly.

I think a big part of why Power rangers didn't do better is that it got too far away from the source material for something that was relying so heavily on nostalgia.

from the same movie:
origin in pure (fun) schlock - takes itself super seriously
self-censoring "shit" and "fuck" - revenge porn subplot (YES) and a cow jerking joke
taking itself seriously - Crispy Creme as a central plot point

oh, I do wonder why audiences are actively avoiding it. [mild sarcasm]

"getting away from source" doesn't really mean anything btw, because most movies you know as 'classics' are themselves things that got way from their source material, but they are actually good at what they do.
This thing on the other hand, is really not good at it. It won't be missed.

edit: as an example of 'getting away from source and being better for it': Van Helsing, of course.

When I say getting away from the source, I mean in the looks department not the actual movie itself.

A lot of people like me took one look at the new suits and zords and went "not my power rangers" and will never give the new movie the time of day to actually go see it in theaters.

It's a big problem when they are depending on people's fondness of the original to sell tickets only to have all the marketing material basically be "this isn't your fathers Power rangers"

Its a balance.

If the movie was exactly as is but with

I wouldn't have been remotely interested in the first place.
I was done with that 20 years ago..

Also a large portion of people think Power Rangers is absolutely stupid and childish,
Movie Couldn't live on the fans alone with that budget.

For what they are meant to be
are pretty good, could be great with some simplification.

yep. I hope it's a John Carter/Lone Ranger/Speed Racer bomb though where I end up really enjoying it despite the inevitable poor reviews and financial failure.

trailers look a lot cooler than I expected when it was announced. Its about time they brought back this high fantasy cheese to the king arthur tale.

I didn't think GitS would bomb so I don't know shit, but King Arthur IMO has bomb written all over it because its trailers are trying to be some weird mix of medieval fantasy and straight up superhero musou shit. It has no cohesive identity at all.

power rangers didn't do well because it was always fucking stupid and all versions deserve to do badly

Ghost in the Shell would have work so much better as a Netflix series around 13 episodes.

Cast an actual Asian actress, find a great script and director, keep the look and feel of the movie as it is (within budget) and you could have had a big hit.

Same can be also be said of a lot of video game properties. Assassin's Creed and Hitman would do gangbusters on Netflix or Amazon.

I decided to check out Snow White and the Huntsman after seeing Ghost in the Shell, movie's not the best but hot damn does it look amazing. Apparently studios have had an ungodly amount of faith in Rupert Sanders because according to Box Office Mojo, that thing made $150 million domestic off of a massive $170 million budget!

Also I completely forget a sequel/prequel came out last year starring Chris Hemsworth.

Holy shit, the same guy directed those? No wonder GitS sucked. All I remember from Snow White was Charlize Theron showing up to scream every 30 minutes and an acid trip second act that literally served no purpose.

Tangentially, I loved that the studio chucked Stewart from the sequel after that cheating scandal when Rupert was the 40-year-old married dude (Edit: guess they both got chucked? Thought he still wound up directing).

He didn't do the sequel cuz he was doing GitS.

Cant see your second picture, but the ranger suits are the smaller problem for me. Alpha is the big problem. And Rita. And Goldar. And Megazord.

How much money is there in a Netflix or HBO series? Maybe these studios should start looking at adapting shit toward TV series instead of blowing their money on a movie with diminishing returns.

Nah they're horrendous overdesiged monstrosities. It's not even that hard to translate. Make the suits look more like power armour with a racing suit flair and have similar colours schemes and your done. Instead they went with that.

A lot (if not most) Film Studios have separate TV studios under the same parent company. Hell, some of them have entire TV networks (Paramount/CBS, Disney/ABC). Even Sony has a TV division that actually is doing better than their film division, I believe (right now their big hits are Better Call Saul and The Blacklist).

Watched Gits yesterday with some friends. As a fan of the original, i liked the movie. Was much better than i thought. The theater was also more filled than i expected. I Hope ir pays itself on world tickets.

I mean you can hope but it's pretty close to guaranteed it won't at this point.
Well, we can always hope, right? Gits bombing wouldn't even be the biggest Injustice related to the box office of live Action anime flicks (that would be the glorious speed racer), but it wasn't a bad movie to me either, so...

That sounds kind of...like what we got? Maybe not with "racing suit flair", but we already did Power Armor.

Any chance that Netflix would pick up a series adaptation of the Power Rangers movie? I want that continuity to continue. I thought the movie was fantastic.

Pretty much no chance whatsoever. They already have an on-going Power Rangers tv series. The brand is nowhere big enough to sustain two on-going tv shows. Especially one that can't lean on Super Sentai footage and thus be far more expensive.

Movie was nowhere near popular enough for someone like Netflix anyhow.

I always imagined the suits in a Power Rangers reboot looking like the Tron Legacy suits (black armor suits with neon trim).

I've brought up in a few threads how I wonder how much the budget would have to be to adopt the movie version as a CW level show.

The movie version is a completely separate audience, this version would be right at home on CW for example.
The Nick version struggles with budget because its meant to be a toy commercial with minimum effort and budget by the channel is resides on.
If CW adopted the movie version it would be like any other show on the channel as long as ratings kept up.

If there was an audience for this people would have shown up in theaters. There is a reason you never really see franchises start out as a film and finish as a tv series with the same cast and continuity in tact.

I'm just as surprised. I thought GITS would make atleast 100 mil domestically and 500 globally. Boy was I wrong.

I understand what you are saying but if you could get it on CW:
1. Not downgraded to hell
2. Budget in the Arrow-Legends-Supergirl-Flash range

It would easily do fine within CW's rating scale.
Movie is just too expensive and really couldn't possibly be much cheaper than it was.

I never thought about any of this, but you two are SO right.

I would be interested in a Jin-Roh Live action movie.
But then again, the animation was one part that really sold me on the movie when I saw it friday.

That would be a better choice then a lot of anime yeah. The obvious parallels to Nazi Germany would make it easier to make.

But as you say that animation is what stands out in that movie. The near fetishistic dedication to making animated people look and feel like they are alive through showing their chests pump from breathing to the way the bullets kick up debris and how people fall over when shot, I wouldn't really see a point in live action.

That ending is also a real bummer, wouldn't want it to be changed

Yeah. It was until yesterday as I realized that Anime is not a genre but really and especially compared to western animation just a medium.
I think I am gonna star a thread soon, I want to see more in that style. Seriously no interest in Shonen stuff or fantasy witches and similar, more going into the direction with GitS with an actual message or movies that revolve over events that could easily be pulled in live action (so like Jin-Roh, I think its a bit hard to understand what I mean here^^)

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Well just saw that Ghost in the Shell had a debut of $3.2 million in Japan and that market is a slow burn, so it's better than the majority Japanese adaptations - not half bad.

Wish it had a week more to itself internationally, but with Furious coming, the drops are going to be more severe.

Should still finish with $200M WW, but expected more from the film, especially domestically.

You can't do a Power Rangers movie and have it not be for kids. Make it like live action big Hero 6.

It should be silly and lighthearted. Putting "grounded" teens in there with Alpha and Zordon and big flying monsters makes the movie for no one.

But does this really apply to the original MMPR movie? There were moments which were silly, but there are like two in the whole movie? And the original movie was a very faithful adaptation of the show.

Beauty and the Beast was over-estimated again. The actual was $23.7M.

GitS estimates were pretty much right on. Smurfs went down to $13.2M.
