Dark Souls III |OT+2| Why Can't We Poise the Game?

Picked the game up whilst it is on sale on the EU PSN and will dive in once I'm done with getting the platinum (3/4 to last trophy) and DLC for Bloodborne.

What builds do people recommend? With Souls games in the past I have usually gone for a dexterity focus and weapons with bleed status effects but looking for a slightly different route. Edit: quick note won't be doing PvP just PvE.

Go for 40/40 strength and dexterity IMO. This will let you try out all sorts of different weapons, and you can then just pick what is the most fun to use. 27 vigor is a nice number to reach for 1,000 health without being embered.

So now that it is out, how is all of the DLC? Is it worth picking up for $20?

Well worth $20 for the season pass. 10-15 hours of gameplay for a blind playthrough, 4 excellent bosses, and nice new weapons and armor.

Play through the game, get a feel for it and,
if you love it and want more of the same, buy the DLC.

Ashes of Ariandel is short, fun but ultimately forgettable though it does start an arc that is more or less continued in The Ringed City.

The Ringed City is about 9-10 hours long and offers more than Ashes and some really neat encounters. However personally I felt it was ultimately forgettable as well for anyone who isn't a Souls enthusiast.

Tl:dr - play the game. If you like it and feel you need more content then get the DLC. Its good but not amazing.

Just beat Ashes of Ariandel, which I'm conflicted about.

On one hand, it didn't feel very substantial. It's not long - it felt about the same length as the Crowns DLC - but that doesn't really bother me because it is quite dense. It just felt like nothing happened. There were a shit ton of enemies, which is fine, but so little actually happens in it. The Corvian Settlement is the strongest area; it's a striking image with a clear history to it. The others are still engaging, but they don't hold anything of interest, seeing as they're just a snowy field, a snowy forest, and an ice rink. You just go where the level design takes you and ransack the place along the way. I guess that's kind of the point, but you don't even get a sense of that until Vilhelm mentions it once. That's another thing: you meet everyone twice, at most. Other than their designs, the NPCs are forgettable and have no progression. The only good story tidbit (and it really is a tidbit) that
the Corvians want to burn everything away for the next world, because they've seen what happens when you try to artificially prolong the world.

On the other hand, the final boss is by far the best in the game. The aesthetic is fantastic; it's kind of badass but mostly just strange. It's also their best execution yet of a really, really tough concept:
double bosses
.

Oddly enough, the boss weapon might actually be the highlight of the DLC. My single largest criticism of DS3 until now has been that there isn't a single weapon I enjoy using in PvE. Suddenly, there's something that's a lot of fun to use without feeling overpowered. It's excellent against groups, average in 1v1, and relatively weak against bosses - so it's pretty much the magic bullet for this game's existing balance issues. So, even if Ariandel isn't very good, it's given me a way to finally enjoy the rest of the game.

That's pretty much Souls games in a nutshell though. I felt like Ariandel was way better about lore and story stuff than usual. I was actually interested for once and felt like the game was giving me something to work with. It wasn't mostly just ultra vague item descriptions this time.

So I beat everything and got 100%.

New character, I can't even get past the tutorial boss.

Oo
To be fair, Gundyr is surprisingly tough with the wrong approach. Hugging him and being super aggressive is the way to go. It's kinda funny, I saw Souls veteran streamers dying to him multiple times at launch because they were being overly cautious.

I wanted to buy Splitleaf Greatsword from the stone-humped hag at Dreg Heap. But it says stock depleted. I'm pretty sure i didn't buy it from her. Any idea how to get it?

I must have missed it, but does anyone know if the complete edition of Dark Souls 3 will have all the dlc on the disc or will it just be the original release with the dlc voucher code?

Which weapons are best for a strength build? PVE only

If you have the capacity for a second weapon I used to run with a Butchers Knife backup. It has A scaling in strength and is fast. The move set is very limited but it's great to switch it up on the fly.

That was last May though, it might have gotten a nerf.

I thought I was burned out after DS2 and BB, but this game is something else (got the GOTY edition). The atmosphere is unmatched and the dark fantasy art style is simply so amazing.

Is there a primer or an introduction to the lore and premise of this game?

Heavy infused Exile Greatsword got buffed in the last patch and has insane AR now at 66 strength.
Until tomorrow!

Regulation Version 1.32 - April 5th
Kimmundi said:
SURPRISE BALANCING PATCH!

As usual, first the technical stuff. It's a regulation update, so it's mostly server-side. It will be deployed at the following time on April 5th:
Timezone Consoles STEAM
JST 11:00am 6:00pm
CEST 4:00am 11:00am
PST 7:00pm 2:00am

The patch will include the following changes:

Reduced damage of the light arrows fired by "Angels"
The sorcery "Hidden Body" is now effective against "Angels"
Reduced the damage of homing spears released from "Spear of the Church"
Reduced the amount of bonus absorption the "Spear of the Church" receives during 1vs2, 1vs3 and 1vs4 games (1vs1 is unaffected)
Reduced the amount of HP "Church Guardian" has during a 1vs1 match (1vs2, 1vs3 and 1vs4 are unaffected)
Increased damage and scaling of simple, crystal, fire, chaos, lightning, dark, deep and blessed infusions
Increased damage of raw infusions
Reduced damage and scaling of heavy infusions at lower weapon levels
Increased scaling of sharp infusions, and increased damage gain at high levels of dexterity
Reduced scaling of heavy infusions on lighter weapons
Reduced damage of "Exile Greatsword"
Reduced damage for L1(LB) attacks, and increased stamina consumption for L1(LB) attacks and weapon art "Ember" of "Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords"
Fixed a bug where the weapon art "Wind Wheel" of "Splitleaf Greatsword" was applying more status effects than intended
Fixed a bug where fully charged R2(RT) attacks of "Profaned Greatsword" and "Black Knight Greatsword" were not consuming additional stamina
Fixed a bug where the weapon art of "Preacher's Right Arm" would combo for more hits than intended
Fixed a bug where the weapon art of "Painting Guardian's Curved Sword" would combo for more hits than intended
Increased damage of Toxic dealt by players, but reduced the penalty to stamina regeneration

Quick analysis:

A bit of balancing on the angels, frustrating for a lot of players, a bit of balancing on Spears of the Church as well. A lot of balancing on infusions, and a quick nerf the meta weapons, especially RKPGS which is becoming problematic. Please note it's still a tentative balance, done through a regulation update so we didn't have the same liberty as with a full patch, we'll see how it evolves.

The infamous combo on the Painting Guardian Curved Sword should also be fixed in the update.

Enjoy!

anyone know how much the average scaling attack value goes up each higher grade?...for example how many attack points does the average weapon go up from a B scaling to an A scaling...and for each higher grade does the value go up equally (from C to B from B to A etc)

example: if the Greatsword Regular +10 has 318 damage with a C scaling and the Greatsword Heavy +10 has 294 B, which is better?...the one with the better scaling has 24 points less damage, so will the scaling itself give you more then 24 points to make up the difference?

Have you tried this AR calculator? https://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls3/weapons

but it's more of a general question I was asking about...in terms of scaling do all weapons scale the same way in terms of increased damage points...going from a C to B scaling etc do you get the same increase in damage points

From what I've read, it varies by weapon, and each letter covers a range, not an exact %. This video has an example of these ranges in the description.

Don't sweat it, I know exactly what you mean, it's almost impossible to make a good looking female in these games without spending at least a day in the damn creator.

From needs to do something about that with Demon's Soul 2 and Dark Souls 4.

Ugh! FUCK! An hour in and I still can't beat Iundex Gundyr! I want to eat his fucking face! I feel like there is a really sluggish & noticeable input lag in the combat that I never see mentioned. Maybe it's because I'm a herald but my character is slow as shit.

karasu

The combat is faster than Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2
I only played about an hour of DS2 so I can't say. It just feels as if I'm at huge speed deficit compared to the enemies. Maybe if I two-hand the spear it'll be more efficient. I dunno. It's all I have though. I've beaten the first boss before but it's starting to look like that was luck.

Now that all the content is out, I've been working through NG+ for the first time. What were some of the harder bosses for you? So far the only thing that actually seemed harder was Aldrich. Those spells did a ton of damage, and I used up all my estus on the successful attempt.. Everything else...eh. Even Nameless King got taken down in one attempt, and it usually takes me a few tries in NG to get the timing down. I imagine DLC2 bosses will be harder.

Is your equip load at 70% or over? You should definitely try to keep it lower than that. Also, if an enemy feels unreasonably difficult, you're probably not supposed to fight them yet, such as the
large crystal lizard
and
half naked dude with a katana
(very minor spoilers but I tagged just in case).

The best way to tackle Gundyr is to stay close and be aggressive. Especially in the second phase if you hug him and always try to get behind him, he pretty much can't touch you.

Man, it's been a long time. Nice seeing the thread still alive.

Well, most of the discussion is in the Ringed City OT.

The pre-Irithyll levels do so little for me. Not a problem in NG+ since you can sprint through everything and do the DLC so early but... it's the new build blues.

Man, invasions fucking sucks in this game. Why I keep coming back to them?

I tried some invasions last night after a long break and it was just awful.

The first one was a 2v1, the second was a 3v1, and you guessed it, the third was a 4v1. In every single invasion one person was spamming the Black Serpent pyromancy while the other(s) ran after me. Funnily enough I did win the 4v1 because the host did the applause gesture amidst the chaos and I took that moment to sprint in and Hornet backstab them, and then another enemy finished them off as they panic rolled away.

But still, victories like that are few and far between with DS3, so for me it lost it's appeal much faster than the other games in the series. The most fun I've had with invasions in this game have been at SL 30-35 with +2 or +3 weapons in Farron Keep. You still get outnumbered but it's a very big and hazardous area with lots of places to hide and enemies to use. Health regen (ring, chime weapon art and blessed infusion shield) allows you to negate the poison and have some really long encounters. If you're looking to get back into invading in DS3 I'd highly recommend keeping it low level.

Lol I think I saw you banned?, must been quite some time.

Welcome back, anyway.
Yeah, I served a 4 monther. I didn't and still don't agree with it, and I considered never returning many times. I'm only posting in Souls-related threads. But, happy to be back. Will update the OP soon. Loving the high frame rate on ps4 pro. Honestly though, I've been playing the shit out of DS1 on the xbox one via backwards compatibility. It's just so good.

Beat Twin Princes last night but been flying through as I want to get to SL120 and hit the DLC with this new character (already platinumed the game on PS4 with a level 220 guy).

I've been tinkering a bit with build; what is considered the "optimal" mix for STR/DEX these days? Still rocking the Butchers Knife I picked up way back near the start and levelled it up to +8 but i'm starting to hit a wall.

Hey, finally picked this up with all the DLC. This is my first run. I'm ok with mild spoilers (wouldn't be in this thread otherwise). Is there anything that folks consider a "must-do" in a first playthrough?

I'm basically running my OG Dark Souls character in terms of build (High dex/End, low HP Ninja) and been pretty satisfied with the results. I'm right before
The Abyss Watchers
. Gear is Uchigatana +4, Darkwraith armor set, Dragon Crest Shield.

I love how smooth the game feels. The animation quality is a HUGE jump from DS1 and everything just feels more responsive. I'm really impressed by the fit and finish of the game.

man, dark souls 3 is amazing. its difficulty is brutal sometimes but it's fun and very rewarding. it really does give you a sense of accomplishment.

the soulborne genre wasn't appealing to me. i tried the first dark soul game months ago for an hour - 2 and thought it was alright. i didn't care for the genre. then dark souls 3 went on sale on steam last week that caught my attention. i had no games left to entertain myself. i desperately looked for a game to play and enjoy. so i risked and bought ds3. after 30 min - 1 hour of playing and understanding ds3 enough, i instantly fell in love with it. 15 hours later ds3's one of my favorite games now. i'm gonna play the ds series backward (from 3 to 1) after i beat 3 and its dlcs. i wish there is a way to play demon's soul, bloodborne, and nioh on pc (don't like to play on consoles. pc master race). especially bloodborne; it's apparently the holy grail of soulborne.

Not really. NPCs questlines are extremely finicky, but if you actually go through the steps to do them properly it'll ruin your first experience with the game. It's just tedious.

There are a few optional areas but you can always get around to them later. The game asks you before sending you to NG+ so there's no rush.

What's a good melee weapon for a pyro (and later dark magic) build?

I'm finally getting around to a magic build and I never play around with weapons in this game because there's so many I just stick to old favourites, regular weapons, is there anything unusual or especially suited?

Witch Locks does a lot of damage, but requeriments are a bit high if you want to stay on PvP range . IMO

Demon Scar from the new DLC has the advantage that also works as a pyro flame so can cast pyromancies. As a weapon is not vey good, but the very low weight makes it a good choice if you want to be below 30%.

Onyx blade, from first DLC, is possibly the best pyro weapon, since Greatswords became a very good weapon category and this was made with pyros in mind. Obviously weight is a bit high, but otherwise is just great.

Then we have the always reliable Thrall Axe, with low weight and does quite some damage on a chaos infusion.

Overall elemental infussions will be buffed in the new patch, so more options will become more viable.

Good recommendations thanks. I'll probably give the Thrall Axe a go since it's easy to get and I'm still very early on the run. Everything else seems a bit far off for now. I'll give the Witch Locks a go too when I get there, I like to stay light!

Thanks! I've basically decided to roleplay Solaire at this point. I spent a lot of time farming Darkwraiths for their armor (and souls...) and to pass the time I kept dropping my mark in front of the boss door. By the time I actually had to fight the boss on my own I wrecked it. Oh one NPC question though:
I sent Greirat out to scavenge I think this is the second time he asked, how long till he comes back? I just beat the Deacons and Wolnir and can access Irithyll.

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
I almost wish I had recorded all the Guts cosplays I invaded and murdered just to make a montage out of it. Most overused, boring, and creatively bankrupt Souls cosplay ever? :p
