Denver furry convention canceled: Unpaid taxes, neo-Nazism, and sex offender

Of course the worst, most downtrodden dorkwads need to find excuses to feel superior to others.

Is there actually any evidence to suggest nazism is more common in the furry community than outside it? Because there's certainly plenty of non-furry nazis to go around. Some are even in government!

Isn't Foxler the dude who's Uber racist but has a black boyfriend he dates because he only sees him as his furry alt.

I want to be a big bully furry and when I'm beating up Nazi weakling furries I want cartoon sound effects to be playing.

There is definately a mockmentory in this - following a bunch of furries to their cons and all the madcap adventures they get up too. Someone needs to write it ASAP

I don't think any statistics are available, but stuff like the sexual predator detailed in the OP along with the ongoing Pennsylvania furry sexual abuse case make you wonder.

EDIT: Not talking specifically about Nazis of course, just the questionable amount of degenerates in the community

I would say that I'm shocked at this, but I'm not. The convention scene in Colorado has always had some unfavorable attendants that come to the anime cons and usually stir up trouble. I had no idea that this Foxler character was from Fort Collins, though.

It was that thread or another furry thread that got infiltrated by, well, furries. I visited the Furrygaf thread that was so graciously linked by a furry and saw that a user had directly linked to hardcore porn involving Kass (Zelda: BotW). I called that user out, they got banned, and now they are unbanned!! I just don't understand how someone can openly post porn on a 13+ forum and not get perma banned.

Not to mention I still fuckin think about that wack ass shit when I'm doing shrine quests

Yeah I remember this. I think there's a little bit of denial as to some of the seedier aspects of the community when poster talk about how it's all nice and whatnot.

A community largely built around fantasy and escapism will struggle to recognize and deal with real world issues that might leak in.

Same thing happens in the gaming community too.

How is furry porn one of the "seedier" aspects? There is porn for everything after all.
Murrsuiting? People like sex. People like roleplay. So why not combine your two favourite things?

This is what happens when an online community based entirely around factionalism starts incorporating real world factions into it. And given the rampant, almost daily and unending drama of the community before all this happened for damn near two decades, yeah.

Shit gets ugly. And none of this is surprising. Wounds were allowed to fester and become infected for too long.

Now there needs to be things to deal with it.

I'm not too familiar with the furry community (communities?), but Bob's Burgers had an episode about bronies/furries that seemed really on point about how much drama they have.

Oh hey, I was wondering when this would appear on Gaf. Honestly this less a story about furries and more a story about about how insane SovCits are. The real undoing of the con was not paying taxes since 2011 when they lost their non-profit status for... not sending in tax documents. Because the owner of the company is a SovCit and believes he doesn't have to pay taxes.

I have no idea how you keep a con going for ten years without doing taxes, but that's the situation that happened here. The Nazi drama thing I feel like is more a scapegoat the con board used to blame for them shuttering up the con, when in reality I feel like the con venue got wind of the fact the con was dodging the IRS and demanded a larger security deposit which the con couldn't cover.

But yeah, the Nazi thing in the fandom is really super great and it's exactly what I was hoping to happen when I decided to start wearing a cat costume. Please, let this fandom attract Nazis who like wearing dog costumes while Spouting their violent and hateful rhetoric. Please, I need more people to think I'm also a crazy person who tolerates that shit.

Furries are so fucking weird.

Let's not go too far down this road.

They are consenting adults. The Nazism within these social group is weird. You can say you would never be a furry, and I'm not one myself, but this isn't the place to take up a battle against furries, nor do I personally think there will ever be a place.

Plus seeing some pushback within their own community towards Nazism, I'm grateful for those that are willing to punch a Nazi in the face, or at least show that they do not welcome them anywhere.

I'm not going to kinkshame but all this furry wars is bloody ridiculous

Nice more kinkshaming-GAF

It's not a kink but thanks for your concern, I guess.

Anyway, we're all pretty much glad the shitfest got canned (particularly since another Colorado con is taking its place.) Nazis and SovCits can fuck off.

Can't wait for gaming to clean its own house so I can talk on voice chat without fear of harassment. We're working on that, right?

Nah, let's just be adults about this. It is absolutely weird behaviour and not in the least bit surprising that it fragments into all kinds of sinister shit. I understand that Neogaf has a sizeable contingent of these characters, but normal behaviour it is not.

Is it that weird? A lot of religions worship half human, half animal gods and mythology filled with all kinds of man animal creatures and monsters from kitsunes to minotaurs. Seems pretty common through out human history.

It really is that weird, and that shit is weird too. We're all quite liberal and accepting of all kinds of things but sometimes shit is just weird stuff for weirdos. This is one of them.

People trying to talk about what constitutes normal behavior on a forum where on one side people are either mansplaining away harassment of women and getting seriously emotional about one's Overwatch picks, and on the other people are asking whether or not they fucked up by telling a female co-worker they actually stalked them online, is always fascinating to me.

Glass houses and all that.

I was speaking in general that humans have had a thing for half human/half animal creatures through out history.

This isn't that though is it. This is a bunch of nerds with various repressions and emotional instabilities who are acting out amongst each other to various extremes of sex and fantasy, in a time when they could alternatively seek help for their conflicted self.

And yet somehow Furries are possibly the most uncomfortable bunch of them all

To me it's just different. Similar to cosplaying. I don't do it and I don't want to and it is just different to me. But this isn't my hill.

Nah, I'm going to be straight with you. Most animated media these days revolves around anthropomorphism. It's completely normal that some kids grow up with a fondness for anthropomorphic characters and want to create their own characters. The furry fandom also has the distinction of being a very welcoming fandom, and frankly, a safehaven for all members of the LGBTQ+ community to feel normal and part of a tight community that has each other's backs.

The issue is in recent years, fringe hate groups that are full of not completely mentally sound people noticed this very welcoming atmosphere and figured they'd slide in and take advantage of it to bring more people into their hate groups. If you look at the large majority of furries who go to cons and are social people who are the ones actually representing the fandom's activities to the world at large, you'll see that near everyone in that group does not tolerate Nazis and would gladly punch a few in the face.

But the problem is that furries are an internet based fandom and anyone can consider themselves furry since it's a self applied label. If you know of a way to get Nazis to quit doing that, I'd love to hear it, because this belief that furries are weird people that faction themselves off and that it's no surprise that Nazis appeared is a completely misguided viewpoint.

Furries are completely normal people, and being part of a community with like minded people is something everyone who doesn't want to be alone will look for in their lives. Dressing up in costumes is something not unique to nerdom, no one harshly critiques cosplayers. Furries just tend to focus in on cartoon aspects because we all love cartoons. And that's not a weird thing either.

So its like most every anime/Scifi/fantasy/etc. Convention I've ever been to.
