ARMS Invitational featuring Dabuz, Abadango, and Momochi

It's hard to say for sure without playing it, but it really depends on how big of a deal the abilities are between characters. Seems like they'll be extreme enough that every character feels really different.
Yeah like the Mummy has armor and does more damage in general, but lacks speed. The different arms are probably good to balance out character tiers.

I still kinda wish you couldn't just pick whatever arm you wanted. I get it adds more variety, but kinda ruins the uniqueness of each character.

Each character still has unique skills and abilities, like super armour, hovering, multiple air jumps, critical health buffs, teleports, instant ARMS charge, and most recently kicking. I think that's plenty unique.

Love the more that I see of the complexity, it's simple enough but deep enough to have lasting power. Just a little worried because I want to see a little more of the meat and potatoes, can we assume that this game has no real single player mode other than maybe an arcade like mode?

Talking about armor, can't wait to learn more about the projectile durability stuff.

(they kind of talk about it in the new direct about how certain arms are fast or whatever, but they get swatted out of the way or something)

I mean, they showed off some singleplayer minigame in the direct from a few days ago, I don't know why you would assume it has nothing but arcade mode.

I wouldn't assume anything just yet. People thought Splatoon would be MP only but it ended up with a well received campaign mode.

A played this a little at Dreamland. Pretty fun and surprisingly intuitive! Ninjara was my favorite character to play out of the three I tried.

Oh ok, so that's in essence throw teching.

Though I guess you need an arm on hand to avoid.

Guess it'll be a good idea to not spam both hands too much.

You can also (relatively easily) dodge throws. Just make sure you don't accidentally dodge forward. =P

Watched it when you(?) posted it in the other thread. It was really intense for a game they weren't familiar with. The first match is my favorite just because it's just Ninjara after that, and because of all the air game.

They really want people to use motion controls. I feel the same way.
But they really should advertise the regular controls well at least during E3 because people will skip the game based on their dislike of motion controls.

Agreed. Especially if the characters weren't well balanced.

I'm going to assume that you can catch someone with a throw when they recover from a dash and the only viable way to get out of the throw is to have an arm on deck to break the chain thingy.

But yeah, when's the demo ;_;

Can anyone TL;DW his overall impressions? I don't have audio here at work.

He talked a lot about the mind games, which might be a little too detailed for TL;DR.

Essentially, he proposed that reading your opponent's movement was a thing.

I'll post what I said in another ARMS regarding the way Nintendo is handling the marketing:
Another thing is Nintendo's focus on the motion controls is probably more damaging than we thought. I'm sure the motion controls are great, but nobody really cares about motion controls. Unless it's integrated with VR it's not a selling point anymore. I just listened to a recent episode of The Giant Beastcast where the group completely dismissed the game cuz it reminded them too much of a Wii game, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people who don't have strong feelings for this felt that same way.

Real talk I want to see the Smash scene push this game (much like some of the Smashboards leaders were responsible for creating Squidboards for Splatoon). There's so much competitive possibilities for this. The announcement of a 2v2 mode should easily enable Doubles Tournaments.

So Dabuz confirms that Ninjara's ability is broken and that's why everyone was choosing him. Hopefully they know about that.

Just listening to Nintendo's explanation made it sound broken lol

But there might be some inherent weakness in the ability that we just don't know about yet...

Otherwise, Bayonetta patch :v

By default, it will probably at least be a side tournament at any Nintendo event since it's very likely that people will have their Switches on them.

The portability factor will do this game a lot of favors in the long run.

I feel that the motion controls will appeal to children and casuals more than you think. Nintendo is trying to cast a wide net with this title. If the game is competitively sound then I think that community support will follow naturally, but if they want to sell more than a million on Switch they'll need to draw in people who would never usually think of picking up a fighting game.

You don't need motion controls to cast that wider net. The people buying Switches aren't buying it cuz of motion controls. They already got people who don't play Zelda to play the new Zelda.

Did they slow the pace down over the past few months?

Assuming you're talking about the speed of the game, probably not...

It's just that the invitational demoed people who actually learned how to play the game :v

(on that note, I don't know if it's because I come from an FGC background, but I was mostly surprised that people didn't see the movement potential right away and just assumed that the game was slow)

I mostly expect the game to become faster than what we see in the OP vids once it releases and people find some movement and animation cancel tech.

I feel talking balancing about a fighting game before the entire cast is known and the game is released and a few months in is way too early.

Edith: Of course Nintendo would play the game slower in demos, so it's easier to see the stuff they want to explain.

It works for Tekken 7. Of course ARMS shouldn't spend a year doing balances.

Bookmarked to watch later today. I feel like ARMS is going to be the next big hit for the Switch. This title has the potential to push me over the edge over buying the console more than Breath of the Wild does, but that's mostly because I don't think I can handle another 50+ game right now.

No one likes motion controls in 2017. I wish they would be killed. Ugh.

Just to point it out, a majority of Splatoon 1 players used motion controls. Either way, you can opt to use traditional controls ARMS if you want, so I don't see the issue.

After watching that footage and listening to those impressions, talking about dash invincibility, mix-ups, wake-up dodge rolls, etc. I don't know how anyone could say this isn't a fighting game.

I wonder if tournaments will be forced to a standard such as traditional controls just to make sure the controllers are wired not wireless.

At the risk of sounding arrogant, the people who won't buy the game simply because it uses motion controls are quite honestly, being babies. Not only do you have a conventional control scheme available as an option, but this isn't blind Wii-mote waggle controls either. ARMS uses very precise and very specific gestures for it's controls. It's fine to prefer more traditional controls, but to act like the default motion controls are somehow damaging the game is silly and ignorant.

I'm pretty sure they'll allow wireless controllers if someone wants to use motion controls. They would have to play at their own risk though.

The motion controls seems awesome. It's one of the reasons I want it. I might also buy a second pair of joycons so my wife or friends without switches can play over here as well.
