Mississippi Grind is a dope movie - very much worth checking out. And I remember really liking Half-Nelson when I saw it like 10 years ago.

Color me interested!

Fair to say at this point they're not interested in doing that at the Marvel factory. Might as well build a robot to direct the rest of the movies.
Marvel needs to take notes and be more creative with their projects like DC

Two directors are the future of blockbuster Marvel movies?

The actors are always singing the praises of Joe/Anthony, but they're also brothers and as tight as two people can get.
John wick, Stranger Things, the Han Solo movie and now Captain marvel
The future is all about duos, baby

John Wick duo split up to do their own projects, and so far, both are strong on their own.

I'm fine with this, pretty much the biggest names to direct these have been Favreau and Whedon and upcoming with Coogler.

Kenneth Branagh was notable when he did Thor. Maybe too much credit to say Whedon was a big name in movies, though.

Just kidding, sorta. I don't want enough movies to know either of these two or their movies, but they seem like interesting choices. I am hopeful that the movie turns out good and that Carol is likeable. Partly because I want my auntie Monica movie, dammit.

I hope the John Wick 1 team (Stahelski / Leitch) gets a shot at a big Marvel film. But regarding action we should be good with Deadpool 2, headed by Leitch.

We need them and Phil Lord and Chris Miller to make a superhero movie. My dream is Blue and Gold by Lord/Miller.

Cool, now who is going to direct the Black Widow movie......

Chad Stahelski and/or David Leitch.

pls

Was getting worried for a while there with no news. I'll just echo the same sentiment "Never heard of them, but they seem to have a good track record, and plus Marvel's track record too."

Good choices. We should probably start hearing about casting in the near future.

Cool to see these two get such a big project, though I gotta wonder what kind of direction Marvel wants to take this in, considering that they're known for very intimate character studies.

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
Very curious to see how Marvel makes their first big female led movie. The choices here indicate a more personal movie, which could be perfect.

she was great in Moonlight, i'd love this

looking forward to this robot's long take action sequence in Black Panther

stahelski and leitch actually helped out as second unit directors for some of civil war's action scenes btw. according to an article on screencrush they helped out as they were friends with the russo bros, so they already have a connection with people working on marvel films. it would be pretty awesome if they picked up a property to direct.

I assume they'll have minimal input to the action scenes, which will be handled by experienced action and VFX crew, and their main focus will be coming up with ideas for Carol's character. Standard procedure for Marvel films. Assuming their next task will be rewriting the script like Gunn did for Guardians and then it will go into production early next year.

I've not seen any of their stuff but this is less left-field than Watts getting Homecoming, so I reckon this will be good.

We're still going with this narrative that Kevin Feige holds a gun to the directors head while telling them to start rolling?

It's even more ridiculous because it's based on nothing other than an assumption since directors have said the exact opposite plenty of times. Both James Gunn and Taika Waititi have both have gone as far too call their films "indie".

Marvel and Feige are smart people, they're not going to get great directors and then force them into making movies that aren't representative of those director's styles.

Characters first directors. Solid choice.

Exactly my thought. All of their movies were excellent character-driven pieces, which is what Captain Marvel should be. So now we have character-focused directors and an actor who has proven herself in major character pieces...I'm really liking the direction this movie seems to be headed in.

All of the Marvel Studios Phase Three creative teams aren't "robots." Each of them boasts a unique style and an interesting filmography.

o nice I worked on Mississippi Grind

Anna and Ryan are good people and super talented

MS Grind and Half Nelson are solid movies with great performances, looking forward to seeing what they do with a freshly minted Best Actress

I think it's ridiculous to think on either end of the spectrum. At the end of the day, it's Fiege controlling the overall cohesive vision. We've also heard reports from other directors who turned down roles because you don't get a lot of freedom.

The true answer probably lies in between.

I think its interesting that marvel has hired its second team of directors for a film. Maybe they see the benefits of big action films like they make having another person to help share the directorial load with? It certainly seems to have helped with the Cap movies.

Yeah. Analogy I've seen used is the studio decide the destination while the directors are choosing the route and steering.

I should clarify, it's not just a Marvel Studios thing.

The most action that the Russo Bros ever directed before Winter Soldier and Civil War was the paintball episodes of Community... so.. that metric doesn't mean anything.

Pretty obscure pick.

I think I remember reading the Russo Bros made their presentation on what they'll do and it impressed Marvel's executives so much that they hire them.
