Media Create Sales: Week 15, 2017 (Apr 10 - Apr 16)

Unless Sony were throwing astronomical amounts of money at Capcom i just dont see how it would be a PS4 exclusive, especially with early switch sales being promising.

Having monster hunter on it would do pretty much fuck all for the ps4, i really cant see them thinking paying the amounts of monies required

I'd still assume the most likely possibility for MH5 is being Switch exclusive with a slim chance of it being multiplat, no way in hell would it be ps4 exclusive

Edit - actually maybe 3ds/switch multiplat could be a possibility too

Capcom's comments definitely hinted at Monster Hunter being on PS4. I'd say there's very little chance of MH5 being a Switch exclusive.

We're forgetting a couple of things regarding Nintendo's involvement with MH:

Monster Hunter got I believe the first ever standalone 3rd-party game direct, where XX was unveiled.

And, Nintendo themselves seem to be localizing Monster Hunter Stories for the west.

Not the kind of thing I think would happen if the series was about to jump ship.

Rewind back to I think around 2011, I think it was said that Sony forbid Capcom to localize Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD on PS3, I think it was due to it just being a straight PSP port and it would look bad in the line-up or something? I could be TOTALLY wrong, I just recall hearing this being said.

Then all of the sudden BOOM, Monster Hunter 3G and Monster Hunter 4 for 3DS.

Feels like Sony burnt the bridge and Nintendo was getting more on Capcom's good side and everything fell into place. Not to be forgetting Capcom IIRC helped design the Wii Classic Controller Pro specifically for Monster Hunter 3, I think it released as a tie-in for the game alongside the debut of the black Wii.

So yeah, when you look at how things have been, there's nothing really pointing to things going different aside from some random rumors and looking too deeply into Capcom's words about consoles in the west and whatnot which could really be also describing the Switch's console side (which Nintendo does market as in the west).

I have a strong feeling that the mainline Mon Hun will be still Switch exclusive but there will be 'western' version of the game released for Ps4/Xbox one by the time movie comes out.

It would sell about as much as Final Fantasy XV. I mean judging from the sales data we have from everything ever.

And that's only if it's exclusive.

It only makes sense for Capcom to focus that series on the Switch. I have a very strong feeling you guys are going to be disappointed.

The smart decision is Switch exclusive. Of course Capcom gonna Capcom.

I see Monster Hunter will still remain focused as a portable franchise. They may try to make console MH's happen again but they are not gonna ruin their 4-5 million copy selling franchise

MH won't be an exclusive to a platform that is not portable that's for sure. That's basically the reason why it grew this big in the first place. If you remove portability, then pray for the West to salvage the lost sales or for the platform holder to carry the bulk of the development and marketing cost.

Are we back to MH talk?

Is there anything wrong or unlikely with PS4/Switch? What all is there to discuss at this point...?

but anyway, when will all of Japan developers jumping onboard then? There are just some third parties onboard with the switch currently

I found a Japanese online site that has Switch in stock. The reason I guess they have any to sell is that they are selling them at a premium over retail at 37,000yen But even at the jacked up price they keep going in an out of stock.

Or you could get it used for 35,000yen

So weird to see a negative discount for used stuff.

But yeah, if you are willing to pay, you can get a Switch now.

I was preparing the May Prediction League but I have no idea about what to include.

There isn't any relevant new release other than Minecraft: Switch Edition. I guess I could include once again Nintendo Switch Hardware (3rd month) and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. There is an Attack on Titan title for 3DS but it is a visual novel.

Edit: I just realized the retail version of Minecraft: Switch Edition is coming later.

Out of curiosity, do we know what's the stock situation for Zelda on Switch, both new and used? Easy to find?

New copies are not hard to get. I haven't seen it sold out anywhere since the week after launch. I saw one used copy at Book Off the other day. But it was only 500yen cheaper than a new copy so there is not a ton of motivation to buy used yet.

I am Setsuna on the other hand is starting to appear used at above the retail price. I know this because I have been trying to buy a copy but I won't pay more than retail for it. I should have bought it launch week but I figured there was no way it would sell out...

The price of used Disgaea 5 has also been going up slightly but you can still find new copies of that game around.

I did terrible. Luckily, even though nearly all my Switch predictions were too high in the end, the system is having much better legs than I was expecting, so I did end up being positively surprised by Switch sales. I'm disappointed by Zelda's performance, though. I knew my prediction was optimistic, but I didn't expect to be so far off the mark. It's odd that the attach ratio is so low compared with other countries. It's such a no-brainer purchase.

Hah. This is the normal way of things when stock is short, so this is actually a good way to know if the supply is still constrained or not! :p

When the discount starts veering positive, then supply will have started to reach demand levels.

Well, this is what we have, it will be a boring edition but we can't do nothing.

Used games prices going above the retail price? What's happening? lol

SE produced a very limited run for IAS. Its pretty much gone.

It's still weird that it went up. It's still used, and available digitally on different platforms. Can't believe that its physical version is in demand despite being an old game.

So, naive and honest question, does it mean that porting I am setsuna was worth the investment? I am sure SQUEX didn't expect it to set the world on fire, maybe the numbers are good enough for them.

And lol at the MH talk again. I am longing for MH5 announcement just because it will end this endless discussions that are going full circle.
Capcom, just do a nonsensical and nihililistic move by making it XboxOne exclusive to piss off everyone

It's still weird that it went up. It's still used, and available digitally on different platforms. Can't believe that its physical version is in demand despite being an old game.

Well, for one, it runs like garbage on the Vita. So there's still a market, however small and a fragment of the largely already-satisfied market, that wants the product.

Maybe this calls for a small reprint from SE for a quick buck, especially if the copies still sell at full price at retail.

That is a great question and one I wish I had an answer for. When first week numbers came out many people were saying "bomba". And yeah, the sales numbers were not great. Then it dropped off the charts. At the time most assumed it was because it failed (I though so too), with that in mind, I started to see if I could get a copy on the cheap in a "bomba bin". But not only did I not find cheap new copies (or any new copies really), but I started seeing expensive used copies.

My guess? It did good enough for SE to go through their available stock but not good enough to compel them to do another run of copies.

I am worrying that Spelunker will be the same. I enjoyed the demo but it didn't feel like a game I wanted to buy new at retail price. It's the type I usually pick up on sale or used. But now I feel that it might be another very small run.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Online stores surely see demand from importers, but interesting to hear that the demand could be still good at street stores as well. The same for Disgaea 5. Even if this is a report from Vinnk's village only, we would've already heard / seen of games getting major discounts by now (as it happened with the 3DS, Wii U, and other times where games were severly oversupplied).

Bic Camera is still doing its weekly raffles every Saturday for the chance to buy a switch. Meanwhile, Yodobashi Camera has also been selling its weekly shipment on Saturday. I narrowly missed getting one at Yodobashi last Saturday (they got a pretty big shipment), but I was able to get my hands on a Famicom Mini (!!) instead. I am going to show up at opening this Saturday and see if I can snag one. Yep, demand is super high for the switch here. It's a keeper

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Having monster hunter on it would do pretty much fuck all for the ps4, i really cant see them thinking paying the amounts of monies required
Monster hunter has actually progressed as much as much as it did in the west thanks to Nintendo marketing the game for capcom in the west, capcom is basically obligated to release MH on Nintendo from now on

They are really not, just as they weren't obligated to keep releasing on Sony after the PSP days.

What did it offer early adopter Switch owners though? The game had already been released on home console and portable, if you were interested surely you already grabbed it.

Personally I think it would have made more money if it was released a bit cheaper one month in. Scratching that 'just finished Zelda' itch. I still want a copy but only after I've finished Zelda, so maybe I'm projecting my own desires...

I don't think there is any obligation. The PSP made MonHon the biggest 3rd part game in Japan yet Capcom jumped ship.

They could leap back to Sony. But without Sony introducing a new handheld I don't see why that would be a good play for this series in particular. Portability is one of the main factors that made the series a success.

Sure in the West being on a portable is not as important but it would be very bold to risk your core market in pursuit of another one.

Then again the "Capcom 5" made no sense either, but they still did that. So anything is possible.

I can't say if this is what happened in relation to "I am Setsuna" but there are a lot of people I know in Japan who do not own consoles. Just handhelds. If they had been 3DS owners before and moved to the Switch it would be new to them. I never played the VIta port but if it is as poor as some people say it was there would be motivation to buy the Switch version. Again there is not any data to support this, just an observation.

And then there are the "Nintendo or Nothing!" fans...

And importers who wanted a physical game card I suppose.

And me who is not sure he even wants the game but is now compelled to buy it before the price goes up any further (I realize I have a problem).

They are all small groups of people but it seems it was also a small shipment.

you mean the gamecube games?? weren't all minus P.N.03 ported to the PS2?

Yep. It was a very bad plan. And it didn't work.

Also Remake and Zero. But the point being Capcom made a deal with Nintendo when a competitor would have offered more chance at sales. It was backtracked on but probably hurt sales long term. Instead of making a PS2-based RE4, it got a cut down inferior late Gamecube game. Even when you backtrack on decisions like that the initially spurned 'obvious choice' platform owners potentially aren't impressed with being ignored initially.

Well I mean we're seeing Japanese publishers do that across the board. The infamous Vita to PS4 transition is exactly that.

Also Capcom is dumb.

I can see Capcom doing a 'Capcom 1' deal with Sony for MH5 on PS4. And when the game sells less than MH4U worldwide, even with Sony's marketing muscle, Capcom makes MH Portable 5 on the Switch.

Well I mean we're seeing Japanese publishers do that across the board. The infamous Vita to PS4 transition is exactly that.
I'll give Sony credit for making the Playstation ecosystem a thing in Japan. It's too bad the PS4 couldn't sustain it before the Vita died a slow death.

I feel like capcom makes a decision about supporting a console based on how much they like the hardware and not on whether said hardware has commercial potential or not.

You could tell they LOVED the PSP and not so much the DS, if we look at their first years in the market. both did well so it paid off.

back in the PS2NGC generation, capcom was hopelessly in love with the NGC, Mikami was a huge gamecube fanboy..

but regardless... this is history and right now there's no way capcom moves MH to the PS4 exclusively.

Not only because of lack of portability, also because on Switch, MH would be one in a handful of special third party exclusive games. on PS4 it will drown in a sea of major AAA games (in the west GTAV is STILL taking everybody's lunch after 3 years!)
