Petscop, the new (most likely) creepypasta pretends to be a PS1 game

Over the last few weeks, a YouTube channel has been uploading a Let's Play of a game called Petscop. On the surface, Petscop appears to be a peppy animal collecting game that was never officially released. Hiding underneath that, though, is a dark and fucked up game that references real-life child killings. Nobody can tell if Petscop is real, but it might not matter.

There's a lot of debate in the comments of these videos as to whether or not Petscop is real, or if Paul has faked it somehow. Is it actually a playable game? Is this an ARG? Is it just an animation? Perhaps it's an elaborate creepypasta? But the experience of watching Petscop certainly feels authentic. If the whole thing is a performance, Paul really sells it without being too dramatic or understated. And the game itself, the attention to detail put into it—everything from the menus, to the animations, to the sounds, all seem like a PS1 game. In recent years we've seen some games, like Back in 1995, recreate the aesthetic of titles on the original PlayStation. It's certainly possible that someone could build something to look like Petscop, though it would probably take a lot of work.

If nothing else, it seems more plausible to believe someone in 2017 is making a weird thing on the internet than to believe this is really a long lost 1997 game that nobody had heard of before today. But who knows? I reached out to Paul but did not hear back in time for publication. Honestly, though, I don't really care what this is. If it's a real game, holy shit. If this is an internet story / game, then I am in awe over how elaborate it is. Someone clearly put a lot of thought and effort into all of this—there's so much footage, so many different areas and assets. And of course, it's all very entertaining to watch. I want to know what's going on.

You see, at the center of Petscop there is a mystery:

Throughout the game, there are multiple references to ”rebirthing," and ”Newmaker." Players treating Petscop as an ARG have discovered that these are references to Candance Newmaker, a real person. Newmaker was adopted at five, but she was apparently a troubled child who allegedly killed pets. Seeking help for their rocky relationship, Newmaker's guardians tried something called ”Attachment Therapy," which is supposed to help kids connect with their parents. The goal is to make a kid revert back to an infant's state of mind, which supposedly makes it easier for parents to control their children. None of this stuff is backed by actual science, however, which might explain why things went horribly for Newmaker.

I'm always up for a good creepypasta! From a safe distance in a well-lighted room that is.

The Kotaku article is more hesitant to label this a creepypasta, but the aesthetic of the game screams "modern indie game" to me too much for me to think it's anything but that.

Looks like a Unity game someone made with the old CRT filter add on from the Asset Store.

Also, some of the puzzle solutions are so obtuse that only the creator could get them, I'm sure.

Too easy to splice video of the PSX boot sequence into video footage too.

I love it when creators put that much effort in creating a fake but convincing creepypasta.

It's like the Godzilla NES creepypasta.

I'll keep on eye on it, from a safe distance in a well-lit room like the OP says :D

The Godzilla NES creepypasta was great until the end where it literally turned into an anime

STILL THE BEST

Yeah I agree, but man was the buildup up to that point was well made. Some of the sprites were quite convincing, and some felt off and not-8bit (on purpose I guess, so that they would not feel right on a NES game) plus it was well written.

Wait, I expected another edgy retro-style game but this is actually cool. But I don't think a child could have come up with these puzzle solutions lol

I'm always so wary of non-text creepypastas because it seems like the perfect place for jump scare images and/or shriekers. I guess they're effective, but it's such a cheap scare tactic.

indeed. Always wary.

Thankfully this one doesn't have any of that yet. It's interesting. Subscribed, hopefully this all goes somewhere and doesn't end up being yet another clichéd creepypasta.

Forgive me if this is really stupid but with so many YouTube channels wouldn't the fact that we even really know about this say something about where it might have come from?

I love me some creepy pasta. I just hope it's not "omg game is possessed!!!!!" like it usually is. Like, why can't the game be normal but like, the diary of a serial killer or something?

Looks realistic enough that I wonder if the guy made the game himself and just gave it a PS1-esque look. Or maybe he made it so that it actually runs on a PS1.

This game is creepy, no question, but reading about what happened to Cadence Newmaker and many other children is legitimately terrifying.

I suspect its not a unity project if only because theres several free ps1 style shaders that recreate the jittery polygon look (the game mentioned in the article Back in 1995 uses one of these), and its a weird detail to overlook for a game that could otherwise pass the aesthetics test. might be game maker? not that it ultimately matters.

still this is really interesting to watch!

Binged them all. The final monologue was a bit too self aware, but maybe it's getting somewhere. This is the first creepypasta that I actually wanted to invest more than 15 minutes into since the original.

Ohmigod is this well made...

Pretty great work, considering this may have been made from scratch for the sole purpose of being a creepypasta-esque web vid. This 'not actually real game' looks like it would be decent to play even if it's just prototypical lol.

Thinking about it further makes me realize this is a fascinating evolution of the typical creepypasta.

It's actually a literal riff on the let's play format, addressing a unique zeitgeist of the modern crowd's most recent obsession and twisting it into creepypasta form, and I don't think there's been a lot of those. There's been creepy games, and creepy vids, and creepy pasta 'bout both, but a creepypasta mock let's play is distinctly its own thing, with its own set of challenges, and quite a new undertaking. I digress though. Whatever it is, props to the minds behind it.

(Also can't wait for the next entry, when is it coming?? I think I love this now... compelling, dark, and, aside from some obvious moments, eerily nuanced... like the Marble Hornets of let's plays, in terms of how it's making me feel, lol.)

Can't say I'm a big fan of using a 10 year old child who was choked to death as inspiration for a creepy pasta. Wonder how these fucking idiots would feel if they went through the same thing.

But I do respect the talent behind this. Extremely creepy and well done. But fuck it. When you do Creepypasta, invent something. Be creative. Do not use the murder of a little girl for cheap thrills. It destroys everything you worked for, and makes you a coward.

Very cool. It looks true to life too, alot of jittery textures that can't stand still, and it seems like it could be a PS1 game.

Wonder what engine he used to emulate those effects?

This seems dumb.

Yeah, and I'd be more into it if he talked like a human being. "Now I'm getting nervous", okay clear sign that you're full of shit, because if I was playing something like this, I'd be like "what the hell is going on? oh, huh, that's weird"

Doesn't make good content though I guess...I don't know, just seems like the same ol creepypasta tricks.

Kotaku giving a YouTuber a chance to profit off a child's death. Lovely.

Is this a step up or a step down from their (ex?) parent company profiting off of rape videos? I honestly don't know.

Serious question, do you feel the same way about Law and Order or similar TV shows adapting real life cases for episodes? What about authors who base their stories on true crimes or events? That kind of thing is incredibly common.

I guess game companies aren't allowed to profit off say, World War 2 because millions of people died in it.

I shouldn't have read the story behind Cadence Newmaker's death. I really shouldn't have read it. I want to go cry in a hole now.

You're not alone. What's really sickening is that this attachment therapy bullshit is actually a thing. My mind literally can't process how this methodology gained any sort of legitimately.

People have explained it to me like five times but I can still never remember what creepypasta means. It makes no sense to me and never sticks in my brain.
