Man lmao the demon negotiations are kind of a pain in the ass some times.

Liike you know the kind of answers a demon wants to hear but you're sitting there looking at the answers after it asks you "what kind of dish are you good at making?", and all you can think is "is fried rice more serious than spaghetti carbonara?"

So my whining about stats was kind of premature because like the very first thing I did today was complete the first Big Bang burger and like all of the associated stats outside of Guts went up. lol

Speaking of Persona 5, any tips for stats to raise or confidants to focus on early on? I plan to play the game once my semester is finished, so any advice on how to make my experience smoother would be greatly appreciated.

From my experience ('m in july)

Focus on your charm and guts asap.

Ryuji (chariot), ann (lovers), the clinic girl (death) are all super easy and super quick to get to ~rank 7 and you meet all 3 of those characters within your first week or so.

After that you'll wanna focus on temperance and fortune when you get them because they allow you to be a bit more flexible with your time.

It's kind of nice how p5 kind of gives you enough time to get a few confidants up to a high rank before throwing a bunch more at you.

Raise your kindess to max.
Raise our charm and guts to max.

Ok, cool - I wasn't sure if I should focus on Temperance/Fortune first, since I know those provide a lot of utility in terms of dungeon exploring and time in general. I think I'll go along with those 3 first, and just see what I like as the game progresses. I'm not going for all-Confidant run or anything, but I would like to max as many as possible.

Lol slight confidant perk spoilers
So I got that one thing from ryuji's confidant perks that lets you insta kill an enemy on ambush a long ass time ago, and I was grinding for some yen before finishing up mementos on the early floors and after having it never trigger during the 3rd palace it's not triggering like almost every enemy because I guess I out level them a lot? It's nice that it lets you just steal a mask from the enemy but i wish it would also give you some money...

You definitely wanna do those when they're available but you can't really do fortune until july so just focus on those whenever and temp only starts being available at the beginning of june and you can't really work on that one as often as you can with the others.

Also sun is really easy and you should definitely do that whenever!

I remember Trinity Soul.

I wish I didn't tho, it's almost devoid of good qualifies, Saddest part is, it has a cool premise, but it's wasted so badly... >_>
I enjoyed Trinity Soul, but that was yearsss ago when I saw it after finishing P3. I'm pretty sure there are some P3 character cameos as well. I don't think it would hold up if i were to watch it again.

Just about hit July and finished the 3rd dungeon, anyone know what Knowledge level you need to score high on the exams? I'm assuming Max knowledge probably?

English. Ryuji's English voice acting is amazing. I forget the actor's name but he deserves to win best voice actor for the year.

He's great, but let's not get crazy.

Nobody should win anything with this shonky script. Especially not in a year with a new Uncharted and potentially new God of War (if that first trailer was anything to go by). Heck, Assassin's Creed comes out too, and that'll probably have better VO than Persona.

Do agree with the script being shonky in a few parts. Oddest thing is, the writing was on the wall with the preview stuff. I remember us talking about it all the way up to the English version's release.

All of the voice actors are fantastic tho.

I remember bringing it up multiple times and being angrily told that I had no basis to complain, lol.

I ignored all the complaints about the voice acting (was it you going on about Makoto's voice not sounding right? :p) but it did seem like there were warning signs about issues with the script.

And I don't even think it's that badly translated. It's something they can fix in a future FES/Golden style update if they ever do it. They've re-dubbed over dialog lines before.

I sure hope so. Just something to make it flow better.

(HEAVY THIRD ACT SPOILERS. DO NOT TOUCH!) nothing like
"They will learn that Joker, who they believe to be dead, is actually alive."

Max Mittleman.

He certainly does a good job as a character I'm not all that fond of tbh.

As for Matt Mercer, he's Matt Mercer. Nothing more need be said.

Yeah, I think Ryuji's VA is competent, but not great, and I'm not fond of the character to begin with.

I think the writing for Yusuke is pretty bad (I've known a lot of artists and none of them act like that), but Matt Mercer does such a phenomenal job with the subtleties.

My favorite VA so far is the doctor, perhaps in part because it's an adult playing an adult, instead of a 30-something voice actor trying to be a teenager. But I also just love her understated punk sass.

I realized last night I have 60 hours on the clock and only just recently beat the 2nd palace. I think I'm a bit slower than some of you. :/

One addition to this game compared to P3 that I really don't like is the stat gates for the SLinks. It makes the time management feel so much more intense. Like "oh cool, I just met this new person. Oh, but I need level 3 guts and I'm at level 1? Okay sure, guess I'll be talking to you two months from now." I mean in theory I think it's a cool idea, it makes sense wrt real relationships, but in practice it's just frustrating.

It can't be helped. We don't want to forgive a scum like you. Even if you are right, we are not holding anything back and are serious to be mean with you!

This isn't something new. One of the main reasons I couldn't finish Mitsuru's SLink in P3 was because she wouldn't talk to me since I took too long to max out Academics.

I mean, in P5 the second non-party member confidant you meet requires 4 guts, so you can't actually start it until late in the game despite Morgana bugging you about it constantly.

P5 also has mid confidant locks too.

Ah you're right, I forgot about Mitsuru. Wasn't she the only gated one though? Maybe the Gourmet King also.

I can't really put my finger on why the time management feels so intense this time; maybe it's because there's so many activity choices, and even when it's a 'small' activity it still wastes the whole afternoon or evening. I think they should have broken up the day into smaller time segments.

All the party member girls in P3 (sans Aigis) were stat gated. Yukari was charm, Fuuka was courage, and Mitsuru was academics.

Sure, but like I've said, that's really nothing new to either P3 or P4. Those games gated SLinks behind stat checks, some pretty high up.

I think the temperance arcana also needed academics? There are probably others I can't remember.

Hmm. Maybe it wasn't as in your face back then, or maybe pacing was better so that you weren't running into those gates at the beginning of the game. I don't remember being frustrated by gates back then, except with Mitsuru. In P5 it feels like I'm being blocked with every person I meet.

Persona 3 did not have stat gates in the middle of a social link. Only to initiate them to begin with. Mitsuru requires you to ace an exam (or, if you're playing P3P, max Academics) to start. Yukari required max Charm, Fuuka required max Courage.

Persona 5's problem is that the stat gates are ridiculously weird, arbitrary, and nonsensical. Such as the example Crimson mentioned.

I think the temperance arcana also needed academics? There are probably others I can't remember.

Correct, it's gated against academics to start, although it doesn't require max and the requirement is easily met by the time it's available.

Persona 4 did, unless I'm remembering incorrectly.

If you guys are saying it's considerably worse on 5 though, then I'll just have to take your word for it.

Persona 4 didn't either. However there were a couple of options that were unselectable if you didn't have the required stats. Yukiko's social link comes to mind; some options required level 3/4 courage.

Edit: Oh, Dojima and Nanako required expression. However it's nowhere near as brutal as Persona 5 suddenly demanding max charm in the middle of a confidant.

I don't remember the stat requirements being as frequent in P4 as they are in P5.
I only remember needing max knowledge for Naoto and the Tower link.
Maybe it was just easier to max you're stats in P4 and I just didn't notice all of them.

P4 one hundred percent did--both Dojima and Nanako had midway gates--two each.

EDIT: Nevermind, you remembered.

By and large I prefer the midway skill gates over dialogue options being locked. Those feel way more frustrating to me.

The only skill gate I don't care for in P5 so far is Iwai, feels out of place for how early they introduce it.

Yeah, I forgot about them because I never usually run into them. They're mostly pretty lenient. Dojima actually has three gates.

Persona 5's gates are way worse tho. Besides throwing you confidants early on that you cannot possibly start, some of them have different requirements then what they required to start it.
There's also one super nasty confidant that, after a point, will simply will not rank up anymore until a certain point in the story. But the game doesn't inform you of this at all, allowing you to waste precious time on it.

The nonsensical placement and requirements regarding confidants reminds me of Persona 3 vanilla. I'd rather have Persona 4 over what Persona 5 does any day of the week.

I'm not 100% sure, since I've just reached this on my NG+ run, but I think
Sojiro actually does lock after you reach the points for the rank 5, but it will let you hang out with him after the rank 4 event until that point. Or at least I just got a prompt saying that I need to wait for something to happen later.

P5 does have a few dialogue options locked too, but either their not very frequent or I just had enough points to pass most of them, since it doesn't tell you if you do pass them successfully.

The only S.Link I've encountered so far that seems to be introduced early but super duper out of reach is Iwai (which I haven't started yet), and P4 wasn't innocent of that either--the Tower S.Link is available really early (like... May? I think) but requires max Understanding. The other gated (from the start) S.Links I've encountered so far I've cleared pretty quickly (like, within a week or two from learning about them).

I don't have much to say regarding midway skill gates (as I'm not really far) but beginning skill gates don't seem out of character for what I've seen in the series before. At the very least I'm glad it's not P3 that arbitrarily gated a good number of S.Links behind other S.Links.

He is no longer your expectations' - which were only in effect before the game was released - subservient puppet.

Fist of justice.

I only found one.

I never encountered a single dialogue option stat check. I legit forgot those were a thing.

I'm guessing what few there are are locked behind guts.

The stat gates and other things in P5 are really intense, which makes some of the confidants flow weird. Like Tae Takemi was smooth sailing for all of april and may then suddenly I just couldn't speak to her again until fucking august because of the charm gate lmao.
