Is Deadly Premonition that good?

I bought it dirt cheap on Steam a week ago, but didn't have a chance to play it yet. I've heard that people here praise it and recommend whenever it's okay. What should I expect? Does the gameplay still holds up?

This game is great. It's also terrible. That's part of why it's great.

It is as moving and enthralling as a game as a Sinner's Sandwich is delicious

You are only half a person if you do not play this game

It's one of my favorite games of last gen, so I'm gonna say yes.

It's not because of the gameplay though. What makes the game so great and memorable is the story and the characters. Great music too.

Fun fact: I found about Deadly Premonition by searching for "Twin Peaks The Game" on Google. I was not disappointed.

In terms of pure gameplay? God no.

But everything else about it is incredible. Like...it's hard to believe something like it even exists.

lol, the gameplay never held up to begin with

Deadly Premonition is ultimate B-movie game. It's hilariously bad. I still don't entirely get the fanbase behind it. I never finished it but I will say that playing with a group of friends it was pure delight to laugh at nearly every single decision that was made in this game's design.

From what I vaguely understand the story goes some insane places, and maybe that's where the larger fanbase comes from, but I never got there, so the genuine adoration still eludes me

The story is amazing and the best I have ever experienced in a game. It's not 'so bad it is good' or whatever other nonsense some people say. It's genuinely amazing. The ending nearly made me cry.

The gameplay itself is not good.

It's more than the sum of its parts. It's got bad gameplay but the heart is just oozing from the seams. Some games are well designed but soulless. This game is poorly designed but has a ton of personality and appeal.

Nope. If we're all being honest with ourselves its really not. But it will be at least another couple of years before that mentality becomes the majority around here.

It's serviceable on a gameplay level, but the story, characters and world building are fantastic. One of my favorite games of all time, despite the gameplay being iffy. The heart of the game is that good.

I object to this statement

The story is pretty good and the game is just weird in a sort of charming way.
It's a unique experience and I can see why some people love it.

But as a whole it's hard to call it c a good game since most of the gameplay is terrible.

Gameplay was never good to begin with, but the game exudes charm, has a nice colection of characters and a crazy ass plot.

Is basically the twin peaks of gaming.

So far, it's the only Steam game I've 100% completed.

Janky as sin, though. Lost track of how many times it crashed. Save often.

How. I lost patience after I got to Becky's house. The lockups, the load times, redoing lost progress, the times I had to restart my computer because I couldn't alt tab when it crashed.

Their most recent game was Swery's DDDD, their latest job was Devil May Cry 4 Special edition. I don't know if they are still alive.

I thought their latest game was Sengoku Basara released last August (2016), and they seem to be attending GDC this year. So all in all, pretty alive, but mostly out of sight of Western gamers.

I can't remember why i stopped playing it, I think i just got lost and had no idea what to do.

I plan to play it one day on PS3. Steam wasn't worth it IMO due to the extreme memory leak even after the Durante and QOL fixes.

It's great!

Its bad!

It is one title of the last gen or so where I can say it is truly one of a kind. Developed by a madman. Made with a budget of 80 dollars...

It's technically and mechanically not a good game at all, it's extremely idiosyncratic though. It's that rare one-of-a-kind type of game that manages to be much more than the sum of its parts. If you're the type that's able to look past lackluster game-mechanics and mediocre graphics and controls, you'll find a game like no other. I genuinely love the game and rank it amongst my favorite games.

Deadly Premonition is the perfect comfy video game for me.

Sure, the gameplay is pretty average and I was pretty bummed about what they did to
the sheriff (making a mockery of such a tragic character really wasn't necessary)
, but it was a great game nonetheless.

Terrible gameplay all around, extremely fun and interesting story. Loved it.

The smallest town with the smallest population ever with the biggest hotel and hospital ever.

God, I love this game. This game has that Japanese adventure game charm. "Clear as a crisp Spring morning."

Define "alive". They're now pretty much a porting studio. Their last original game was D4 on Xbox One at the start of this gen...

The story is wonderful and one of the best, if not the best, stories I've seen in video games. But prepared to slog through some garbage gameplay, broken driving, and all around pretty terrible looking world. For me I didn't mind and actually enjoyed all of those aspects in spite of their flaws.

Good luck OP. Tell Zach I say hi!

It's one of my favorite games, but you should definitely read a Beginner's Guide before starting it to avoid some annoyances.

http://shshatteredmemories.com/greenvale/ is a great site if you want to learn or read up on stuff (spoilers are hidden or marked around the site)

Some tips:

-Play it on Easy, the enemies are weaker then. The combat is the worst thing about the game and you want to get through these sections as fast as possible.

-Get some items as soon as possible via Side Quests. Especially the Radio (arguably the most important one, allows fast traveling), Infinite Weapons (SMG, Wrench) and the Weather Doll

-Use the flamethrower for the Crawling Shadows, the most annoying enemies in the game

I'll copy the rest from an IGN post since I'm lazy:

- Run at doors while pressing the "open" button. This does the fast door animation and not the slow "peek around the door" one.

- Press the Back button when acquiring items and entering/exiting your car to skip said animations.

- Don't feel pressured to rush from one Main Quest to the next. If someone tells you that you have to be at a location by a certain time (say, at the Diner between 12pm - 4pm), you can totally blow it off and just show up 24 hours later without penalty.

- Use downtime to do side quests. People on your map have a notepad over their head when they have an available side quest. Not only do you get good items, more importantly you experience some deep and interesting/bizarre back-stories on the town's inhabitants. This is why you're playing the game...the utterly unique story/characters.

Have fun!

If you enjoy jank, as all people of taste do, then Deadly Premonition is amazing.

If you need your games to be polished and refined, then you'll hate it.

People like to say "so bad it's good", but it's not that at all. That implies that the badness is funny or endearing, and that that is why people like it.

The parts of Deadly Premonition that are good are truly, genuinely good.

The parts of Deadly Premonition that are bad are truly, genuinely bad.

The atmosphere, music, characters, story etc etc are top notch.
The graphics, framerate, controls are really, really bad.

But since I am a story > gameplay >>> graphics kinda guy I really loved this game to bits.

But I wouldn't mind a PS4 60fps (or at least a stable 30 fps) remaster, especially with season 3 of Twin Peaks on the horizon...
