It will probably be a device reboot, with the full win10 coming to mobile, but the apps will likely remain, at least 8.1 apps and forward.
But this should have happened eons ago or at least they should support the platform until there instead of just letting it burn. Right now the most compelling platforms for uwp are desktop (where it competes with win32) and xbone. Almost no reason to support a universal platform when it doesn't support other relevant platforms..

Probably the big deal is x86 compatibility on ARM, so every device sold forward will have it.

So, what are you using to move your contacts/text messages?
Edit: Trying Microsofts own Contacts+messages backup app, apparently there are convertors for it in the play store., hope it works.
Edit2: and the contacts+messages app keeps crashing as it's starting to backup contacts. fucking hell.
Edit3: removed from charger, now the app works for backing up, not sure if related, I'll keep you guys posted, I know you must be sitting at the edge of your seats for this.
Edit4: ok, Use Contacts+messages backup (Microsoft app), backup to local storage, copy backup files to computer/Android device. On android device, restore contacts with the VCF file from your backup in the contacts app. Done.
For the SMS restore, there are a few extra steps apparently, one being running a python script to convert the .msg xml info to a android compatible xml info, and then using sms backup and restore app (not from Google, but apparently much used so "safe"), to restore the new xml file to your phone. I transferred my fiancé's contacts by exporting them from Outlook and importing them into Gmail through a web browser. The contacts+messages app worked fine for backing up the texts and after transferring the text backup file to the new phone I used VMG Converter on Android to unpack them. No issues there either and no need to convert through python or anything, the app does it all for you. Worth the £1.90 it costs to save that hassle imo.

Yeah, the link with the script worked great, got all my text as far as I can see (all 7000+ of them). And as Sordid said, you can get an app that does the conversion for you from the play store, so no need to for that extra step. But I just spent 8000 SEK on the phone, 400 SEK on a cover and 4000 SEK on the Gear S3, I aint about to spend another 20 SEK on an app!

Seriously. The problem is not the platform. The platform is fine. The problem is the platform has no legs to stand on.
Microsoft's decades-long stranglehold on the desktop has made them think they're too big to fail, they think people want Windows, so they never stand back and properly reflect on why this is happening.

I'm almost certain this isn't the case now and hasn't been for a while. They know full well nobody wants this, which is why they have essentially abandoned it. When was the last new feature or phone? Let's face it, the platform had been on maintenance mode for a while now.

I prefer the second option. I doubt that they will go anywhere near labelling it a reboot and it isn't like existing devices won't be having access to the latest apps (lawl) anymore as happened the time when you could actually call it a reboot.
They've killed W10 mobile off already. It will be two years since they've released a proper phone by the time W10 ARM is out. What good would it do to release another phone for W10 mobile? No cunt would buy one other than me and a few other weirdos. There may be a chance that they can carve out a small niche that doesn't drain too much money with phones that are also full PCs (or the other way around). The WP ship has sailed when they deliberately sent the 950s out to die.

If you remember how Panos introduced Surface Pro 3, MS's long term strategy is for regular consumers to buy one device and stick with it.

Xbox is in a weird fit in MS's portfolio since people like dedicated machines that can do one feature well.

I'll be interested to see how the s8 sells. From anecdotal evidence there is a lot of excitement and even impulse buys. My friend just picked up a Sprint version on a whim.
Something worried me about his s8, though: I noticed lag and he complained about it during the setup process. I never noticed any slowdown when I was playing around with a best buy demo unit so maybe it's his phone that has an issue or the Sprint version but it was jarring to experience the Samsung lag on such a beautiful phone.

There is always going to be some lag with Android. S8 is going to sell HUGE. I have no doubt.

Brightness is always set to max even after you tweak it, and CPU/GPU clock speeds are set to non-power saving.
They don't represent everyday use at all. Far from it. It's simply an ad to sell itself without anyone telling you anything.
I upgrade phones to accept newer radio signals. Removable battery is a must. Everything else is secondary.

The X16 modem is real, and the phone has really good signal despite not showing as many bars as the Lumia 950.
I know the 950 uses the X10 modem, but the difference in signal strength is noticeable. And the Lumia 950 would take a while to jump from 4G to LTE. It was really annoying because 4G where I work is congested but I can do VoLTE calls and texts no problem.

All I know after playing with an S8 yesterday is that any phone with more bezel looks downright dated, including my S7. The fingerprint sensor on the back is not a compromise I'm willing to do, but the S9 should've sorted that out by the time it comes out next year. I'm also probably going for the Plus version of that model, to finally get more than acceptable battery life.
Definitely not the best placement for the sensor but got used to it pretty quick.

My LG Stylo 2 does the same thing. It actually works pretty well (in terms of ergo, the sensor itself isn't so hot. I've basically given up using my left index finger on it, shit never scans.)

Not an issue at all after a few days IMO
I would definitely try Cortana on my S8, but it still isn't available in Canada on Android and very gimped on Windows devices. MSs slow role out of features to other markets has always driven me crazy.

I know there's a better chance of pig's flying, but it would be quite ironic if Microsoft announced a Surface Phone at their May 2nd event now that most of Windows Phone GAF is switching platforms.

The hardware doesn't matter. If it's running anything other than Android it won't matter.
It would be all good. Phone would be awesome, but lack of apps will continue to dog the platform, then after a year, they'll reboot yet again, and so begins the downward spiral.
I convinced my wife to switch from his, and she's been with the platform since the winphone 8 lumias.

Yep, agreed on all three of those. Thurrott was raving about the Google photos experience before I moved over to Android and I'm not sure what he was bragging about.
You can set up camera roll upload to OneDrive though if you haven't done so.
Yeah, I've done that. It was nice on Win10 you could delete from the phone and OneDrive at the same time

lol Google Photo is just god sent. Truly the most mindblowing feature for me.
I put all my 35-40gb worth of pics on it. The face/location/activity detection on that thing is scary good.

There were rumors that MS (and Google) wanted to buy Cyanogen, but they didn't.
All my photos are in OneDrive so Google Photos does nothing for me. I guess I could maybe start another backup which wouldn't be a bad idea. Just transferring everything over would be a pain.
