I'm TERRIBLE at SFV, yet I LOVE watching CPT, Evo, etc. Any other GAFers like this?

Almost done catching up with Final Round XX via Capcom Fighters (yeah I know, I'm VERY behind this Season)....

While I've probably gotten progressively worse and worse with actually playing SF (doesn't help that my current location doesn't have really any players), I can't help but just love watching it more and more. I guess you could say it's pretty much my go-to competitive sport to watch.
Pretty surprising for me at least as a 34 year old dude that this ended up being THE "sport" that I actually follow (I wasn't ever into traditional stuff growing up, sans maybe a little motorsports)

Anyone else find themselves in a similar place nowadays?

:)

Fighting Games are great to watch, even if you don't know the game well, I find them much more exciting to watch (and play) than MOBA's (even though I like these too).

Sure, I suck at fighting games... I play them very casually and mostly follow the story stuff... Arcana Heart, Blazblue, Dead or Alive.

My gf is the fighting game enthusiast, she's been to Evo.
So she got me into watching yearly now, it's pretty fun.

I'm the same. I'm terrible with any fighting game (even though I love to play it with friends when we're gathered, even more when we're drunk) but I usually follow EVO and I love to watch high competitive matches.

What's funny... is that it was guys like Gootecks and Mike Ross and Maxi Dood who got me into fighting games due to their super cool videos. I got caught in the Rise Up campaign that SFV did and I decided to jump in....

I used to post in the SFV community thread alot back when I tried to get good with Cammy but nah... not that much anymore...

Don't have the time commitment to get good and SFV frustrates me too much.

I can only watch SFV in small bits now. I used to be able to watch like 30 minutes of SFV without a problem but I can't anymore.

The same thing applies to MMA, Soccer, Figure Skating, Dance Battles, Spelling Bees, etc.

Seeing people do superhuman things is fun to watch.

Same here, I've wasted a lot of money on games I barely play because the online is too savage. I like playing with friends on the rare occasion we get the chance.

I absolutely love fighting games, MVC, SF, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Injustice, even Dead or Alive (which my friends and I call Tit Puncher). I buy em all on release. But I cannot for the life of me play them with any competency. I can likely beat my friends who only enjoy them, but I don't think I've ever won an online match. I love watching competitive fighting game tournaments, one of my favourites is Kenny Omega vs Austin Creed/Xavier Woods. I know I'll never reach that level of play.

Basically me. I would lose most matches against anyone remotely decent but fighting games usually have some of the best character designs and a match between two strong players can be appreciated regardless of my skill level.

You know that lady Eva Marie that you like so much? She cosplayed as Laura.

In regards to the topic I do follow competitive SFV but I wouldn't say I'm terrible at it. I have a desire to get better at the game and to go to tournaments but my current financial and geographical situation doesn't allow for that.

I don't feel I understand the systems in fighting games enough to really get much out of watching the pros play. Despite this I play them all the time in my low understanding bubble.

It's fine OP, I enjoy watching some fighting games that I never even played, let alone suck at. Shit is fun.

I'm a casual fan of fighting games (mainly Tekken) but I love watching tournament plays live

The hype always gets me

Boring as hell.

I'm at odds with the announcers yelling at every little thing while the competitors sit there with blank looks on their faces.

Tried, but I can't watch people play videogames.

I'm terrible at fighting games and have close to 0 interest in them (would love another Soul Calibur though).

I'm also terrible at League of Legends/Overwatch/Rocket League/Heroes of the Storm but I still like watching pros play.

I used to think the EXACT same thing

I think having a bit of an fundamental understanding of the mechanics, rules, match-ups, etc., certainly sets a foundation for eventual appreciation and... well hype.

It's like, Starcraft looks like the most boring shit ever to me right? but I KNOW why those watching it, love it

I suck at all fighting games. (Except Smash.)

I don't have the time to dedicate myself to learning combos and such.

But I absolutely love watching tournaments and whatnot.

Iove games.

..And enjoy sitting next to my friend on the couch.

Guess I just don't see anything amazing about it.

Same here. Fighting games are the most accessible esport, because it's basically boxing with life bars.

Watching someone play competitive games at a high level is different than watching someone play regularly.

Watching people play Street Fighter just casually is ehh. Watching pro players do the same can be incredibly fun to watch because there's a lot of high level stuff going on. In terms of understanding the systems, in terms of "feeling each other out", in terms of mindgames and in terms of execution.

Same goes for practically every other e-sport and honestly, every sport in general.

I don't really know starcraft (played just a bit of sc2 and boy do I suck) but from here and there I like watching tournaments matches, I don't really get what's going on the screen but it's still entertaining.
BTW I'm quite mediocre at rocket league but I still deeply enjoy rlcs.

I'm the same. Don't play fighting games, watch a lot of tournaments on stream/youtube. Love that shit.

I even follow the LoL majors and I've never played the game.

Oh totally. It's great to watch even if I'm not 100% sure on the mechanics behind what I'm seeing. The only fighting game I really gel with is Tekken (and Soul Calibur 2 I suppose), but I guess knowing that game better does give me a different side as a viewer.

Yeah.

I played SFV casually over the space of a few months last year, trying to get better at the game. I do really enjoy playing it, but it can be so stressful, and progress can be so slow that I eventually stopped.

I still really enjoy watching tournaments and stuff though, despite the fact I don't really play SFV any more, and suck at it.

I'm terrible at fighting games and I really don't like playing them either. I get caught up in the hype of the big fighting game tournaments though - they're nice to have on in the background whilst doing other things.

I spectate the games I do/did play to a certain level.

Which is why I don't get what the flying fish is going on in Smash.

High five OP! I was decent at some point, but I simply don't have the mental control to play with consistency without breaking my phone/pad/anything near me at some point. I already lost two phones to fighting games, one to MK9 another to SFV.

Not for SFV but definitely for other fighting games, I love watching the big KOF tournaments, Killer Instinct and sometimes Marvel if it has character variety and not just the go to 5 characters.
