Is Street Fighter V Worth Buying Now?

Tizoc

Member
I'm think about picking this up but I remember a lot of people being pissed about the lack of content after the initial release. Has anything improved and is it worth buying?

iF YOU want it for multiplayer, then do get it, the game gets play when I have friends or family over.

The core system is good and easy to pick up.

If you want it for Single player stuff, you're likely to be left disappointed.

After SF4 and all of its great iteration SF5 ending up not being for the casuals because they don't play it. I knew so may people who loved SF4 but felt SF5 was barebones and not very fun.

Just wait for Tekken 7 or hell, even MvC:I.

SFV is one of the worst $60 purchases I've made this gen. Just watch some tournaments on Twitch, that will provide you with far more enjoyment than the game ever will.

Oh yeah... that's ANOTHER thing.

Charging $60 for SFV at launch was criminal of Capcom.

I wish GG's characters weren't so bad. I'll play anime games from time to time, but that roster.. yeesh. I can't believe those characters have endured like they have. If you can get past that, it's probably the best alternative to SF.

KOF14 is solid, I'd go with that over SFV unless you exclusively play online or local vs.

Potemkin is fucking awesome though!

I played it a ton because I spent so much money on the game +season pass at launch. Looking back I didn't enjoy a minute of it. I kept thinking that if I got better it would get fun, but then I remembered all of the other games that I'm terrible at but enjoy anyway.

SFV is one of my biggest gaming disappointments ever. Try looking at other games, Guilty Gear is amazing, Tekken 7 is out soon, Killer Instinct is good, KOF XIV is pretty fun too.

It's entirely upto you. People who are saying "no" probably haven't played in months. If you like a game which is easy to learn but hard to master then go for it, it has more modes now compared to launch (excluding arcade) and if you want to go online without the risk of losing "points" then there is casual mode. There is a good sale right now on NA store I believe and think it's of great value.

Capcom shot themselves in the foot. Everyone is waiting for a goty pack or Ultra Turbo edition. They need to just package a bundle with DLC already.

I was the kinda casual that Capcom was aiming for to buy SFV.

I got caught up in the Rise Up brilliant advertising and thinking I could be like Mike Ross and Gootecks. Bought the Collector's Edition too.

Game finally releases. Realized with dread how barebones the game is. Realized with dread that Survival Mode is very anti-casual.

Decided to become a Cammy main.

Tried to get good with the game for the longest time.

Really is thanks to my love for Cammy that I stubbornly stuck with SFV for so long.

Posted in various SFV community threads on GAF for the longest time until I opened my eyes that the game wasn't really for me.

The game is now collecting dust.

Will not recommend the game to anyone even remotely casual.

Tbh survival is anti-humanity. Doesn't matter if you are casual or not.

And they have done that already. Base game + S1 + S2 is 40$ currently.

Fun is not the problem. SFV is basically the best fighting game out there. Problem was, felt like a beta at launch. KI is only now getting attention because years have past and it's content filled.

No. There has been no discount on the dlc characters, the online is still shitty, & the gameplay is still really bad.
Did you not see the $40 bundle sale?

Nope, not until the SF2 Charscters are in the game, I'll go pick up the switch SF, it has the better cast of fighters.
To be fair, not all of the SFII guys are that popular. Sagat & Fei Long aside, SFV already has the ones that most people give a shit about.

Honestly, I am not sure if it's worth your time.
I was playing it since last May and gave it up for Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator this February. I can't go back, especially because of those loading times.
A good thing it has going is the online players are pretty high.

In my opinion, you're better off waiting for Xrd Rev 2.

how much is it to get the DLC chars without gitting gud?

The Deluxe edition is available for 40$ right now on US PSN. Includes the base game + 12 DLC characters (season 1 and season 2) + a premium costume for each DLC character + Guile's stage.

If you wanna talk Fight Money terms, it's 100k per character.

though there are still 3 characters from season 2 left to be revealed and 4 to be released.

So instead of calling it a flawed disaster, you could have just been straightforward and said "I bought it for single player content but it didn't have enough so I stopped playing it." Then OP would know why you didn't like it.

Sounds like might be a little bit irrationally mad at Capcom because you bought a collector's edition based on getting hyped by advertising.

Did you not see the $40 bundle sale?

The bundle doesn't help existing owners, so his complaint seems fair to me. There has never been a discount on individual DLC characters, right? Even a non-bundled season pass discount isn't going to be appealing to someone who has purchased some of the characters with FM already.

I don't see why the discussion is going on for this long, the OP already got the $40 Deluxe Edition.

NeoGAF had weekly "Shit on SFV" thread for like 10 months without missing a week. Does it really surprise you?

They've had discounts on the game, discounts on the season passes individually, and discounts on the bundle. But no, they haven't discounted indiviy characters.

With that said, if you just wanted a few characters for less than full price people can easily buy them with FM. In the state the game is now there's a ton of easy FM to earn and buying characters begets more FM. Sure, getting everything for free is a grind but if one doesn't want to buy the passes at a discount then logically they only want a few characters. Anyone with half a brain can get 4 characters in something like 8 hours.

None of us are fgc or have a damn job in the fgc (I assume) so people can trash SFV all they want. I remember seeing Mike Ross and Gootecks damage control and step around discussing the game's issues on Excellent Adventures when it released.

Especially Mike Ross. He didnt wanna say anything bad about the game at launch.

My point?

Its refreshing to see people who actually bought the game at launch (and not be blinded because of a fgc job) to speak out on it.

I still have good memories of SFV. I don't totally hate it but its really hard for me to recommend it to anyone remotely casual.

Oh and stop with the condescending "anyone with half a brain can grind FM" bullcrap. Just STOP.

I'm speaking to a GAFer about GAF on GAF where what I described is the standard. And the FGC shits on the game all the time, too. The people who play it on YouTube, including Gootecks and Mike Ross, also shit on it. If you followed the game after launch in any of the circles you're referencing you would come to the same conclusion.

So the "refreshing" comment strikes me as dishonest or ignorant. It reminds me when redditors will say "I know I'm going to be downvoted for this" and then post a safe opinion 90% of reddit agrees with.

Claiming that an opinion isn't the norm doesn't make it so.

With Injustice 2 and Tekkek 7 on the immediate horizon and looking great, the outlook isn't so good.

I'd recommend those two over SFV based on what I've seen.

I REALLY did try to like the game though.... Trying to soften the blow of buying a overpriced shill I fell for at launch.

I think SFV's situation really shows how powerful word of mouth in gaming can get.

Of the two, I can only really see Tekken 7 lasting for the long term. As fun as Injustice 2 will likely be, NRS games don't really last that long.

With the awesome netcode that it has and the support it'll get, I think Injustice 2 is gonna be just fine.

Until the next NRS game comes out then it's deader than disco.

I feel slowly but surely that's changing

MKX lasted with support for 3+ years

Hopefully I2 lasts like 4.

The SF community is so strong though

I know the guy already bought it but for anyone else on the fence I'll give my recommendation.

For $40 the SFV + Season 1 + Season 2 Bundle is worth it. I'm not even including future, free content or changes to the network that's incoming. Just for what the game has now, I think it's worth it.

However, if you're only really interested in the single player then I'd say pass. Of course, if you're only into single player then I'd say pass to almost every fighting game because they make plenty of single player games where the single player is the focus. But if you're into shit like MKX's story mode, which I struggled to stay awake during, then SFV isn't for you. Or maybe it is. It also has a long, boring story mode.

If the concept of the game having extra things you don't have to buy charging what you consider too much is morally offensive to you, then don't buy SFV.

You wanted to be like hardcore fighters, but mad you are a casual? I don't get it. At least choose one.

It was worth it for me at launch. I play it everyday and welcome the new additions.

The game was worth it at launch because it came with two things I cared about: training mode and versus lol

(even online didn't seem too bad since I found myself playing a lot with people that I could theoretically session locally with, but we were too lazy)

So you tried to get good, it didn't work, therefore the game is a flawed disaster? I'm just having a hard time following your logic.

And I don't even disagree that the game is terrible for people who want single player content. That's the first thing I'd tell anyone asking OP's question.

Yeah, my online experience is flawless 90% of the time and works better than Xrd and KOF, certainly. It's the annoying server issues I have a problem, not with the online itself.

I don't get that point because it isn't even true.

I have more than enough FM to buy every single Season 2 character and a stage or maybe even two. I never grind, because that's not how you make the vast majority of FM. All I did was the simple SP stuff with every character (Story + Trials). I didn't even finish survival with every character on Normal difficulty or above. Far from it, I only did Normal with 3 or 4 characters.

The FM I gain from online battles are peanuts compared to that. Where exactly do you need to grind?

I don't know how you do it honestly, back when I was still playing I only had money to buy Ibuki, Juri and a stage, nothing else. Maybe it got better with weekly challenges? I don't know, but doesn't feel like I'll even be able to get them at all if I return now

Weekly Missions almost always give you 5k+ by completely a challenge that's so simple it's effectively demonstrating you have a pulse. Even better, 5,000 of it comes from one challenge that you can complete in 2 minutes. It's a step removed from being a log in bonus.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to pick it up for $40 on PSN. I'll report back once I play it..

Glad to know you made a good decision. Pop by the SFV OT from time to time if you need info, we are very welcoming and there are very helpful guys there with a lot of technical knowledge.
