As someone who know's it coming out and is excited for it... I'm glad they aren't over exposing it and spoiling...

HOWEVER, they shouldn't be trying to sell to me, I'm already in. They should be ramping up the marketing since yesterday. It's a bit puzzling...

It's pretty easy. Treat her like female Thor. Warrior with a fish out of water vibe. Nobody knew Thor all that well or his villains. Marketing helped alleviate that.

Yeah, I think it's 100% possible to make a fun, charming, high quality Wonder Woman film that broader audiences would really like.

I know it's unrelated but it's crazy they aren't marketing WW more, there's been like two trailers a week for Injustice for the last few weeks lol.
WB wyd!?

Problem is they want JL to happen like right the fuck now. Oh you mean we still have to give Wonder Woman some ad space? Fine, and be sure to play that theme again as well.

How is that image misleading? It's not like Wonder Woman doesn't have multiple characters that could have their own videos. Kirk's got a whole squad with him. Hera's got an island of Themiscyrans.

The fact WW doesn't have TV spots to feature yet is part of the problem being highlighted.

I went through and looked at when each of those videos was uploaded.

I guess one of their points was that there's still time.

I honestly didn't know Wonder Woman has her own movie coming out till this thread. I thought she was in some other movie with a bunch of other heroes. Is there a justice league movie coming out soon too? That's the one I know about.

I keep thinking this movie is coming out end of June or early July.
But nope, June 1st.

Really hope this is just a marketing stunt gamble for WB.

And when the movie doesn't do as well as their other Superhero movies did, "Well, I guess people just aren't interested in female superheroes!"

God, this stupid shit pisses me off.

Speaking as someone in marketing, comparing this to Suicide Squad is a bit odd. Suicide Squad is like a marketing person's fucking wet dream. Team up movies in general where you have a lot of different characters you can highlight that aren't really 'spoilers' are helpful. You can generate a lot of content pretty easily that way especially compared to a singular hero. That and you know there's a solid market there for exactly what Suicide Squad was selling.

Not saying they can't or shouldn't do a better job with Wonder Woman.

Yep. Wonder Woman's got basic cultural awareness levels just below Superman/Batman/Spiderman/Hulk in the sense that people are aware that she exists and have a basic sense of her iconography, but very few people outside of the existing comics fandom could actually describe her backstory, name any of her villains, et cetera.

But also, we can't discount the fact that this is a female-led superhero film, WB's just seen Ghost in the Shell tank, and there's a lot of basic sexism in the industry and conventional wisdom that says that nobody wants to see a female action hero so it isn't worth spending money on.

I'm not expecting it to be fantastic and I think the DCEU has been pretty awful so far, but I think chalking it up to 'WB doesn't think it's very good' is missing the forest for the trees. They're demonstrably fine with spending huge marketing budgets on not-great movies. It's the woman factor.

I agree completely.

But yeah, it's weird that so many people have convinced themselves that Wonder Woman is "iconic" as an actual character, when she simply isn't.

Justice League is November this year. Wonder Woman right now reminds me of Man of Steel. I don't remember any ads or many trailers for it and didn't know it was released until a week after it hit theaters.

It is weird there aren't any commercials on the tv, but WB has some of the best marketing teams in the business, they'll probably go all out in the next few weeks. Kong didn't have much in the way of marketing in the lead up and was apparently and then in the last 2 weeks or just exploded and it ended up opening way higher than expected.

Movie business is weird...

Was JL filming before we ever even saw a trailer for WW?
Was JL filming before BvS released??

Don't films take at least a year to make?

https://youtu.be/2LzkKR-22IQ We did see footage months before BvS, SS were out, or even JL started filming

This bad argument was directly addressed in the OP already.

But highlighting multiple characters in Suicide Squad makes sense. It's an ensemble film. They'll probably do the same thing for Justice League. Wonder Woman doesn't need to tell us about anyone except Wonder Woman. As for the TV spots, it is weird that they don't have those up, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them starting next month.

EDIT:
I knew I wasn't crazy. Here are some TV spots for Wonder Woman.

TV spot 3
Extended TV Spot 4

There are more but one's from the Superbowl and another's from last year.

Wow, the marketing people really do hate female heroes don't they. If only she had a massive exploitative stripping scene like Harley in Suicide Squad. But a strong female character? Pffft, can't sell people on that.

Well I'm still hyped to see it.

Man of Steel was all over the place.

I get the sinking suspicion that the marketing department is overthinking how to sell a female-led superhero film and can't decide on the best course of action to take, which leads to no action being taken at all.

Just take a play out of the ABC Family book

But seriously, you're probably right. We'll see, they gotta make a move sooner or later.

Wonder Woman doesn't need to tell us about anyone except Wonder Woman.

Even if I didn't disagree (and I do) there's still a lot of opportunities to tell us about Wonder Woman, which, as other posters in the thread have pointed out, there's an awareness of, but not a real connection to.

I'm kind of not at all surprised there is no marketing push. WB keeps missing the mark on all of these movies, so perhaps the only lesson they have learned thus far is stop wasting money pushing what seems to be a bad movie.

Maybe WB realizes they have a dud of a movie that marketing can't fix, so they are saving a bunch of money by cheaping out the marketing that they can use on Justice League in the fall?

(My personal worry: They know exactly what they have, and what they have is a Wonder Woman movie where Captain Kirk is the primary hero, and you can't really sell that and not drive the anticipation for your movie into the dirt).
My would they make a movie like that and then not stand behind it with marketing? Also even if you're right, it wouldn't be hard to make trailers that make her part look bigger than it is.
Just think of Bryan Cranston and Godzilla

They still have all of May to bombard us with TV spots.

They're probably just trying to cut their losses with a more modest marketing budget. I just don't think Wonder Woman is the kind of character people will get excited about, especially with her inclusion in Batman v Superman meaning that her appearance in a movie isn't much of a novelty.

Any executive or "fan" who takes DC's poor handling of this and the subsequent low performance of the film as "oh, women just can't draw money" is gonna feel real dumb when that Captain Marvel movie hits in a few years.

My personal take (
based on absolutely nothing
): they know exactly what they have and it's a middle of the road (think Thor and Cap 1) superhero film. It will probably get a better critical reception than BvS and Suicide Squad but it also cost way less and doesn't have the potential to garner the same kind of hype from mainstream audiences, especially overseas. The budget was also kept in check for once so they don't need it to perform crazy numbers to break even, hence why no marketing overload. WW is not the kind of hot property that is going to blow up like Batman or Harley Quinn and WB probably knows that. They're laying the groundwork for a solid box-office performer (I'd say anywhere between 350 and 600 million dollars worldwide depending on word-of-mouth) and don't see the need to treat it as the potential billion dollar superhero tentpole that it was never going to be.

I don't know if that makes any sense, but that's my take on it.

After BvS & SS, maybe sponsorship partners don't want anything to do with these movies?
Better bet to partner with WBs other franchises like Harry Potter and Lego.

BvS and SS were both huge movies, BvS was disappointing in the grand scheme of things, but was still a massive movie, and SS was a massive and unexpected success even without a China release.

Do you think these people really care about the quality of big films they put their marketing with lol?

Man, I was good at ignoring it then.

Ya. WB lined up over $170M in marketing tie-ins for Man of Steel, on top of the money they directly spent on marketing the film.

Warner Bros.' 'Man of Steel' Nabs $170 Million in Promotional Dollars

The Superman reboot has 98 partners -- more than "The Dark Knight Rises" -- with Sears playing a "dramatic role" in the film, plus action figures (Mattel), razor blades (Gillette), cars (Chrysler), shoes (Converse) and even the National Guard.

It's a bird! It's a planet! It's an ad!

Warner Bros. has booked a whopping 98 promotional partners worldwide — so far — that are providing about $170 million in support (on top of paid ads) for Man of Steel. That’s even more than The Dark Knight Rises’ $150 million in third-party promos last summer. In addition to those already on board, Warners sources say even more international partners are expected before the movie takes flight June 14 in the U.S. and elsewhere this summer.
