Neo Geo games coming to Nintendo Switch

Which of the Metal Slug and fighting Neo Geo games do you guys recommend the most? Feeling bored of my Switch and need something "new" to play.

This thread has a lot of good stuff spread out so I'll try and keep it collected and update the below summary every so often for easy reference. If I missed anything let me know.

How do I setup a joycon per player?
Go out to the OS and select Controllers from the bottom menu. Select Change Grip/Order. Make sure both joycons are removed from the Switch. Turn one of them sideways and hold both tiny top buttons (SL/SR). If done correctly it should populate the first controller slot. Do the same with the second joycon, the second slot should be populated. Now they are setup as 2 seperate controllers. Go back and launch the game, you are good to go.

I'm new to Neo Geo, what do you recommend?
  • Metal Slug 1
  • Neo Turf Masters
  • Shock Troopers
Recommendations: Fighters
  • King of Fighters '98
  • Samurai Shodown IV
  • Waku Waku 7
(Note: this is a short list I'll try to maintain/enhance as more stuff releases. Definitely dig around, there is totally other good stuff worth checking out.)

Beat MS1 again using 24 continues this time.

Goddamnit, so many bullets. They come from the left, the right, top and bottom, and I'm jumping I'm trying to dodge these missles like TJ Mackey.

I just finished it in 19 on my second play through. Over 10 of those were on the last boss.

I know they aren't Neo Geo MVS, but I wouldn't mind Crossed Swords 2 or SamSho RPG.

Though if Ironclad can get a "MVS" port on the VC, then maybe those can get something as well.

Speaking of NAM-1975, anyone have preferred button configs for any games? I find for NAM flipping Neo Geo buttons B/C (Switch: B/X) feels way better for the diamond layout. Makes the action flow as such:

Switch (Neo Geo)
Y (A) - Primary thumb position. Can tap or hold as needed.
B (C) - Can dodge/run while still shooting. Think run/jump action in a platformer.
X (B) - Roll thumb over to grenade. Shoulder trigger might be a good option, as well, so you never have to leave the Y button.

Thanks for sharing!

Always glad to share these!

I put run on the right top trigger for the handheld mode. Then shoot and grenade on the face buttons. Works well even if it takes a few minutes to adjust. Usually for an arcade stick (Nam on PS4, for example) I just put the three buttons in line...shoot on the first, run on the second, grenade on the third. Run is one of the most important buttons for the game. That is what was so frustrating with the otherwise perfect 240p version released on Wii VC...no button remapping but I took a Wii arcade stick and physically moved the buttons to the position I like.

Usually for an arcade stick...

Over here waiting impatiently for that HORI stick.

I've done a lot of runs on MS1 with the joycons to get a feel for what its limits are for me and I don't know if I can get below 3-5 continues on them. Best I've done with them right now is 6. I don't like playing these sorts of games with console analog sticks (I need a gate, I just need it. I cannot duck/walk for shit with them), and although I fall on the side of feeling the d-pad is serviceable, I'm no way going to defend it.

For the most part it is fine, but when it really comes down to heat of the moment sections, like the O'Neil fight, I am guaranteed to give up at least a life or two. If anyone has 1CCed anything specifically with the joycons I'd be interested in their thoughts.

Edit: I'm not much for milking so Metal Slug scoring has never been much interest for me, but there is a ton of good stuff in the Awesome Game Replays of Metal Slug. Most of it is just super interesting, but plenty of good little strats for anyone looking for survival tips. Highly recommended!

I check Hori Japan, amazon.co.jp and Hori USA a few times a week to see if it has surfaced. Still waiting as well.

Also, for NAM in the Switch handheld I use the Analogue for the target. Works really well. Have not tried the button d-pad yet.

Had a blast playing MS1 with my cousin over the weekend. I wish I had gotten into the series sooner. The level of detail in these games is insane.

You were right about Shock Troopers,it is a hidden gem. It plays like one of my youth favorites, Cabal, combined with Metal Slug. Everyone should buy it NOW.

I've created an arcade focused Discord server. If that is the sort of platform you are interested in quote for an invite link, or send me a PM.

Good point, I should give that a shot.

If Cabal is your frame of reference, and assuming not already familiar, you should absolutely check out NAM-1975 as well.

I had to drop the difficulty to level-3 but I finally managed to beat Waku Waku 7. By the time I reached Fernandeath I sort of got the feel of the general flow of combat but I still can't reliably trigger Super Mode, let alone any of the special moves that aren't a standard Hadouken-type of input on my pro controller. Fernandeath was a pain, he was always all over the place and even though I played through all the stages using Dandy-J I had to settle for Tesse because she has a fast ranged attack and it could stop him. It felt like I had to cheese this fight.

I knew about NAM 1975 because it was an older game than Shock Troopers, but I had never heard of the later. It came out around a time I wasn't buying magazines anymore.Actually it is a surprise for me that new Neo Geo games were a thing in 1997,when ST was released.

Christ those scans...i remember buying those mags and trying to convince my parents to blow a grand on a neogeo and 1 game (to import the console to aus was around 800..900 aud at the time)

Safe to say it never happened...i did manage to pick one up around 95/96 for around 500....neo geo was well ahead of its time.

^ That's the one thing I'm still missing and have always wanted. An arcade cabinet in my home. :D

I knew about the Neo Geo from reading EGM, but what really pulled me in was reading about it in the French Joypad magazine at the time.
The first time I saw an AES is still burned into my mind after all these years.
At one point in time I went with my mom to visit my grandma, and thanks to an ad in a local magazine we ended up in this little videogame store that I've only ever been to once in my life. There it was, an actual Neo Geo running Last Resort.
They let me play it for a bit and even said that basically no one bought one of these as the games were so expensive.
I always wanted one since that day. It took till 2003 for me to finally be able to buy one as I got a well paying job. The first game that I got with it was Last Resort. :) As well as Shock Troopers.
Now that I think about it, I moved a year and a half ago and I shouldn't be far from where that little shop used to be. I've got to ask my mom if she remembers where this actually was. Can't imagine it still being there though.

Of and the first time I saw an AES being played was on a tv show that people from the Benelux are sure to remember: Power Play with Martijn Krabbé. :)

EDIT: Yo Nam-1975 is some good shit.
Still gotta have good reactions so that I could someday beat the final boss :p

Get Shock Troopers and Waku Waku 7.

Over Top, by ADK

Some thoughts for anyone unfamiliar.

Neo Geo had several top-down racers. If you've played none of them let me help give some frame of reference. Older games like RC Pro Am, Super Off Road, or Micro Machines might give you a vague sense of what I am talking about. And although I have a lot of fondness for those games, the way turning radius and handling are tuned in those are way too tight making it extremely easy to over correct. Something you can overcome with a fine touch and a bit of practice, no doubt, but you are still overcoming some questionable tuning decisions rather than improving your skills on solid ones. Call it a difference in design decision if you like. I prefer how later games improved on it, personally.

Over Top has a similar sort of tank controls approach, with the big difference being the way the turn radius, handling, and braking are tuned feels more natural, although very much still an arcade racer. Watch the trailer above and pay attention to how tightly the turning/animation conforms to the turns to get an idea. It feels and looks real nice. Weight and inertia feels good too, like in the gif below. It is rally style, as well, so turns are called out in advance, making you feel much more in control even if it is your first few times on a track. The tracks themselves have a lot of variety in terrain types, and each car handles each type differently, giving some choice with how tight you can cut turns depending on the situation and skill. There are also loads of hidden paths to discover, which I am always a fan.

None of this can be discussed without bringing up another game: Neo Drift Out made by Visco. At first glance these games may look extremely similar, but they are quite different when it comes to the nitty gritty. Personally I think NDO is the better game of the two. The choice and variety mentioned above comes second to how tightly refined everything is in NDO in comparison, to the point that you essentially never need to touch the brakes when good enough at each course (which feels awesome).

However, I still think Over Top is very much worth checking out. Especially if you've never played anything the Neo Geo has to offer here. It is a good introduction for what is to come, and definitely far from the worst of what is out there.

I personally prefer it over NDO because of the variety and never felt like the controls were loose or anything. They are both fun though!

Agreed, they are quite close for me. I think the skill curve is the big differentiator. I find NDO's curve more satisfying, particularly the top-end.

Over Top is secretly one of my favorite racing games.
Can't wait to pick it up on Switch.

Okay, I wanted to see the exact list of Neo Geo games out so far in NA, here's what NOA's site gives me:

World Heroes Perfect (March 9th, 2017)
Waku Waku 7 (March 9th, 2017)
The King of Fighters '98 (March 9th, 2017)
Shock Troopers (March 9th, 2017)
NAM-1975 (March 9th, 2017)
Metal Slug 3 (March 9th, 2017)
The King of Fighters '94 (March 16th, 2017)
Neo Turf Masters (March 23rd, 2017)
Metal Slug (March 30th, 2017)
Alpha Mission II (April 6th, 2017)
Samurai Showdown IV (April 13th, 2017)
Fatal Fury (April 20th, 2017)
Over Top (April 27th, 2017)

Pretty neat so far! The OP should really be updated weekly with the list of games.

Judging from videos of OverTop it actually makes me think that it was Burnout Paradise race style before Burnout even existed. Kinda cool.

Wow
So I played Metal Slug (1) for switch yesterday and I had a blast.
It was my first heavy Metal Slug session since years (I even think since the Wii collection) and I totally forgot that there is (almost) no diagonal shooting.
Playing constantly Contra 3 on WiiU in the last couple of weeks didn't help either, I think.

At first I seriously thought my pro con is broken, then I remembered. -_-

side note: As awesome and detailed the Metal Slugs look, sometimes I wish they would have made them "simpler" because tbh the slowdowns are absolutly devestating at ceratin scenes. (same goes to some neogeo shmups like Blazing Star which almost freezes sometimes..)

Playing these Neo Geo games for the first time is basically discovering an entire library that I never played from one of my favorite eras.

Edit: Anyone grab Over Top? Looks kinda fun. Might grab it unless it's a real stinker.

I would suggest waiting for Neo Drift Out as it is way more arcadish and frantic but I don't think it will ever get released due to liscensing..
sooo...I really don't know

btw: It's certainly not a stinker in any way or form.
edit: with "it's" I mean Over Top

That's the game I was looking for! I thought this was it, isometric-ish Neo Geo racer. Still, this is pretty fun, but I adore Neo Drift Out.

In the French eShop, those Neo Geo games descriptions are so badly translated it is hilarious.

Reminds me of the dark times where we got Dragon Ball Z games translated in French by Japanese persons (who obviously did not master the language at all). More like translate each word one after another. But I was happy to have those games anyway. Good times !

Are people actually playing fighters with the joy cons? I really want to get Waku Waku 7 but have a hard time believing it would be an annoyance experience with the analogue stick.

Please help me with my bad english

Believe it or not, the D-Buttons are actually decent. Can pull moves with a relative easy in KoF '98, but I still struggle sometimes with jumping diagonally. The Joy Con's analog sticks are too lose for fighting games imo.

What are the next releases?
Hopefully MOTW is coming out soon since they've announced it in the last Japanese Nintendo Direct.
