MMO's on Switch.A great fit?

So with the Switch being a great solution for people like myself who do not have that much tiime to game, I actually would love playing an MMO on this thing. I think its a great fit.

WOW
final Fantasy 14
Dragon Quest 10

There are probably loads more, but I never paid attention to the genre because of limited time. But now that I game a lot more I actually feel compelled to try one out.

There are enough buttons to map skills on average, thumb sticks, tilt controls, I can see it happening to be honest.

Wifi is rock solid and very fast for me. Would work great!

Except it doesn't do roaming between different APs on the same SSID. So if I go from the bedroom to the office at the other end of the house my Switch won't connect because the signal from the AP below the bedroom is too weak even though there's an AP in the corner of the office.

Definitely. I feel that WoW wouldn't work because it hasn't been planned for gamepad controls, but FFXIV plays really well on a gamepad for example (same for DQX obviously).
The fact that S-E is open to this is promising, and hopefully, they won't think only about Japan for that.

I don't think that western MMO devs would look at porting their games there though, either too difficult (for MMOs not on other consoles) or different culture (I don't see ESO ever being there for example, even if it could be ported on Switch).

I would love FFXIV on switch, while it can be achieved on vita remoteplay, better resolution and native playing on the device would be great (plus I don't own I vita or plan on getting one).

Light dungeoning, crafting, gathering, fishing would fit so well.

But isn't the Wifi on it terrible?

I haven't heard anything like that. Where did you hear it?

Either way, MMOs on non-PC systems haven't been all that popular. But nowadays even mobile phones start to get MMOs, so who knows. I definitely would love to play one again sometime.

Edit:

Oh I guess that might be true. I can't imagine most MMO players to move around much while playing though. But it would be nice if they somehow fixed this.

I feel like the WiFi is too shitty (at least on my unit I guess). But beside that, of course console friendly MMO games would be good to take on the go... Just about the only types of games that currently wouldn't be good for the switch without a joy con revision are racing games (bad trigger buttons) and fighting games (no D pad).
That said, how many "[insert genre or popular game franchise] would be great on switch" threads do we need? It'd be great if just about everything came to it. I also don't see how different this kind of thread is to a hypothetical "Monster Hunter would be great on PS4/Xbox One/PC" thread.

The Wifi is not shitty at all on the Switch and i am playing Mario Kart flawlessly (except for NAT error but this have nothing to do with WiFi), so yes it would be great for a MMO.

The main issue i think is for some reason issues of compatibility with some router/modem. But when it works, it's great.

60 percent of the time, it works every time.
I've tried two different routers, I don't have a modem (gigabit fiber), and literally every other device I own has a great signal throughout my house, as the dual band router is centrally located. The WiFi being bad for several people is fairly well known at this point.

For something with a 3 hour battery life? No I don't think they're a good fit, aren't some MMO raids longer than that, plus being constantly online will drain the battery even quicker? When docked you're just playing on a low powered system that wouldn't give you a as good as or better experience than any other platform.

Yes, this will be definitely be an issue but OP have said that he doesn't have much time to play so i doubt he will indulge in raids. Worst case scenario you can use a portable battery.

In any case, i don't think MMO really are the type of game who go well with portability.

How would you ever map the buttons on something like WoW to a controller, WoW would possible be one of the worst fits for switch i can think of. I'd rather play counter strike on a switch than WoW. Something with a limited skill bar sure, along the lines of GW1 could easily be mapped to a controller but not WoW.

I don't think MMO is a good fit for anything else than a PC if you're being serious about it. Though I heard FFXIV is good but I can't imagine WoW on a console.

I wouldn't worry about shitty wifi. That's never stopped MMOs from releasing on a Sony console and they are the absolute kings of shitty wifi on their consoles.

I would jump on Final Fantasy XIV the moment it was released on the NS. Same with Dragon Quest X. I would even play TERA on it if that game was released on the system. I have a keyboard ready and my NS is in a great spot in my entertainment center for playing MMOs. I hope it happens. Obviously, it's getting DQ X, but I hope others make the jump as well.

I haven't bought a Switch yet, but I do have around 1300 hours of FFXIV logged, most of that on PS4. A port announcement for Switch would make me drop everything and go buy one. That's my killer app. Portable FFXIV would be love and life.

??? Every Playstation (past PS2) has worked fine for me? The download speeds were sometimes shit, but I've literally never had trouble connecting to WiFi outside of certain hotels with weird log in restrictions.

So it works 100% of the time, except when it doesn't.

If you have the right configuration it works all the time. It's stable. I never had one issue with my router or various router i have tried with it. In this sense it's working all the time. It's not like the Wifi is shitty and you're getting constant disconnection whatever you're doing, like in For Honor for instance.

If I start playing a game in the office, take my switch to bed to play for an hour and it doesn't work it kind of misses the point of the experience, doesn't it?

Another thing to consider is the limited space on Switch for example WoW its gigantic now. It's over 200GB. You would have to get a really expensive SD card to fit it on top of the cost of the console, game and sub.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Kinda got addicted to FFXV on PS4 for a while... wouldn't survive a Switch version lol.

If by MMO you mean MMORPG like WoW, then it would have to be a game built from the ground up A) for consoles (like FF14), and B) for Switch. Unfortunately Switch doesn't handle ports very well, and it would be a really unfortunate experience if an MMO turned out like the Dragon Quest Heroes games that have been ported.

Edit: also think about what a nightmare Nintendo's stance on party and chat would be for an MMO!

The whole "Everything is perfect on Switch!!!" is getting out of hand....

I guess you're referring to the handheld mode of Switch, otherwise there's nothing that makes Switch special. In that case, you wouldn't use it to play a MMO outside as you'd need access to public wifi or data, which aren't ideal for a game that depends on ping that much. Not to mention that MMOs are usually something that takes up a lot of time, certainly enough to drain the console's battery... But even inside a house, supposing the wifi is good enough and you don't need an ethernet for a good experience, I feel that you're not doing a favor to yourself playing games full of different in-game windows on a small screen.
