Italian surgeon just gave a rat a second head

Despite the numerous obstacles Canavero faces from ethical and scientific standpoints, he appears to be moving full-steam ahead. Last year, he performed what he called a "proof-of-concept" procedure in which he severed a dog's spinal cord then reconnected it - one of the major obstacles to completing the procedure in people.

And now Canavero has published another equally repellant study that details how he and another surgeon, Xiaoping Ren, attached the head of a mouse to the body of a rat. The team then repeated the procedure in several other animals, effectively creating a series of two-headed rats.

This is the doctor who looks identical to the MGSV doctor yeah?

The one who was going to attempt a human head transplant.

Read the article; still don't understand the point of the two-headed rat procedure. Other than perhaps "learn more about fiddling with spinal cords."

The other procedure, of severing and then trying to repair a spinal cord, I get. And the article talks about an old experiment that removed a monkey's head and transplanted a new one onto it (without much success); that sounds like it could have some niche applications. But two heads at the same time?

Yes he is, there was even some conspiracy going around GAF that suggested he was a sham and only a publicity stunt orch
estrated by Kojima to promote MGSV, someone went as far as calling his personal office IIRC.

What are the practical uses of this? Honest question. Seems rather cruel to me.

For the record, they've done that to a dog before.

And also transplanted a monkey head on another monkey body. Awful.

Thousands of rats are killed with inducing gene therapy that produces horrific results every year and this is where we draw the line... Okay.
