No wait, I still haven't even jumped into this gen yet. (if you exclude the Wii U which marches to a different drum beat)

The PS4 is sitting pretty. Sony would be really stupid to cut off its leg. They are no Nintendo.

I dunno. Nintendo waited too long to release a successor to the Wii and it bit them in the ass.

The Wii was dead for years when the Wii U dropped and was one of the many reasons they failed.

And clearly PS3 and 360 went on a few years too much and sales where down across the board. Its definitely a balancing act here and obviously new hardware reset is a risk but there are pros and cons for both "waiting until you have to" and "new hardware while you still have momentum"

PS4 Pro Slim perhaps. Sony are riding out the PS4 for a good few years before PS5 comes out and they likely need a few years for technology to be right for it. We have to remember if the technology isn't there to sell a $400 console with a substantial leap, they aren't going to bother.

It's strange to think that these consoles will be five years old next year but I think a part of that is that this generation was a bit slow to start. It feels like only in the last year or so we've finally started seeing a steady stream of good games getting released. I think it will be 2019 at the earliest anyway this generation is a bit different than the last one because of Sony putting out the Pro and Microsoft putting out the Scorpio which will extend the life of the consoles a bit.

Fall 2019 is my prediction but then gives ms a good opening to come out with a more powerful machine in 2020 to follow up scorpio and keep the most powerful console narrative going not that it is going to affect sony too much

No way 7nm is ready for a large apu for a 2018 launch. 2019 would the earliest and most likely 2020. A ps5 in 2018 would be a Scorpio plus with a jaguar cpu.

2019 or 2020.

Not enough of a leap over Pro for 2018 for what Sony probably desires, plus they're still in the gravy train days for PS4. Announcing a new system would absolutely hurt that.

Again, 2018 is nonsense, no chance.

Fall 2019 should be the absolute earliest.

Fall 2020 would make the most sense to me.

Fall 2018? Far too soon. PS4 Pro owners would feel screwed. Some big PlayStation franchises still haven't made their debut either.

Makes a lot of sense when you have a system that's deadset on selling 100 million copies.

Why wouldn't you stop your own momentum?

Is this his speculation, or what? It's worded quite oddly.

Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong (via Wall Street Journal) has claimed that Sony is looking to release the next-gen PlayStation by the second half of 2018. Thong was previously on the money about the launch of both the PS4 Pro and the PS4 Slim, so his speculation should not be overlooked even if it does seem unlikely.
Has he claimed this is something they will do, or is this purely his speculation? The way it's written here isn't especially clear.

Considering his predictions before it's not impossible that he could simply be privy to information we are not, as it's not uncommon. A relatively large number of people at Sony will know this information, and mistakes tend to happen, it's pretty common that people let things slip that they shouldn't.

I have zero desire to buy another system right now, hell doesn't feel like the PS4 has really lived half it's life yet or hit it's potential.

They are not going to release PS5 in 2018 lol.

They are not even going to announce it in 2018.

God of War, Spiderman, Days Gone, The Last of Us 2, Sucker Punch new IP, etc are all coming out 2018 (TLOU2 could be 2019 though). They are not going to announce or release any new console in the same year of all these big software releases, come on.

Good point, does seem unlikely they'll even announce it looking at the releases, though PSX 2018 would probably be after most, if not all them. I wouldn't be surprised if it "leaked" in 2018 though.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I think I'm on team real. I still remember how many people were convinced that the PS4 slim and PRO didn't exist.

I can see PS4 PRO + 4K BluRay happening.

i thought the point of the Ps4 pro was to elongate this gen. now all of a sudden it will be shorter than last gen?

fuck that shit, the longer the better

No not after the Pro has only just recently launched, I think next years E3 they will maybe a mention of something relating to PS5 but it won't be released until 2020, just cannot see it anytime before then, there simply isn't the components at a low enough price to warrant PS5 unless it's going to cost a fortune with some crazy CPU/GPU set-up, it has to display native 4k at 60fps at no more than £399.

That's nuts!

I'm an early adopter and I have no issues buying new systems on day one again and again.
But I don't want to see PS5 in stores till 2020. Holiday 2019 at the very earliest.

They would be smart to do it as much as they fumbled pro

I'm not sure how much power they can get out of it and stay 400 though.

Probably 8 to 10 tf and 16gb of ram with the same cpu.

Should be enough to get 4k ultra for anything released this year especially if the system has even more specialized features and I'd imagine Sony has been making plans. 2018 will be two years since Scorpio was known and Scorpio has been in development for quite a few years.

19 would make sense making ps4 6 years old in 2019.

If they do come 2018 then it basically kills most Scorpio hype which woukd actually do well for Sony. If not, giving me three years power lead won't help them for sure

It's an analyst who saw the writing on the wall for something like the Pro (as many others predicted) happening making stuff up.

Anyone could have predicted a PS4 Slim as well, except those "Wow, PS4 is already slim, so there'll be no PS4 Slim" types from 2013 (who were obviously wrong). He's not privy to something we don't know.

It's better for Sony to increase the profit margin on PS4 by continuing to cut manufacturing costs rather than launching a new console and start all over. PS4 is a very successful machine.

Last gen was too long to be fair, I doubt we'll ever get one longer, even with mid gen upgrades. 5-6 years is normally the average.

Makes no sense. No chance Sony is going to signal the end of the PS4 when it's going from strength to strength.

Lol great way to piss off the most loyal customers who just bought a PS4 Pro.

No, this won't happen. Even 2019 is too early and would just let MS knock them down from the hill a year later yet again. No, Sony need to just sit calmly at their throne with their 2:1 lead and let MS make the first mistake before ending this generation.

In 2 years time I expect further os updates, games, console variations etc. before they drop a new console.
