In 2018, how far will the PS4 Pro price have fallen at that point? 200€? 250€? At that point Sony will have to release a more premium device again and I don't see PS4 Pro 2 being a thing. PS5 would of course play all PS4 (Pro) games and additional PS5 exclusives.

If they keep the x86 architecture and same OS. Why not, 100% backward compatibility.

So maybe?

If the hardware is very different Sony would have to patch in each title to support the newer hardware and be backwards compatible maybe. Should be easier and quicker than MS doing that with 360 games to Xbox One for example since more same architecture etc

2018 seems too early after just having released the Pro. I can see the next being console announced early 2019 and released the same year for the holidays much like the PS4 was.

They are not going to release PS5 in 2018 lol.

They are not even going to announce it in 2018.

God of War, Spiderman, Days Gone, The Last of Us 2, Sucker Punch new IP, etc are all coming out 2018 (TLOU2 could be 2019 though). They are not going to announce or release any new console in the same year of all these big software releases, come on.

PS4 released in 2013. They had a lot of software released that year including TLOU

Anyways, I highly doubt they'll announce a new console less than a year after releasing the pro

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
I think we're at least 10 years away from a new console generation. CPU and RAM are stagnant, so they should just stick with their GPU upgrade strategy. Not worth breaking compatability until they can include 64-128GB RAM at the very least.

CPU and RAM aren't stagnant.

The issue is are the next gen leaps able to be small enough to fit on a console sized apu/mobo at an appropriate cost that doesn't over heat or require a gazillion dollar specialized cooling system.

I personally don't see this happening in 2018. Someone more educated on this subject could school me though.

Would be hilarious if they announced it before Scorpio releases.. actually kinda seems like the sort of thing Sony would do..

The question would be "What's the unique selling point?" The Pro already does 4k, if not exactly native. What kind of a jump could we be looking at? I don't think it's enough to justify a new console.
.

The usp is if we have i5 / i7 class CPU in a console, we can have

1, 60 FPS games like GTA5 that are now 30. 60 FPS gaming for all genres, not just games that are easier to do at 60. That will move consoles IMO.

2. More enemies and better AI - how many open world games have 3 to 5 spawning enemies.

One of the devs of Andromeda said on reddit they are limited to 8 enemies at a time due to CPU constraints of consoles with their engine.

It really does limit gameplay and whats possible.

Apparently, Takashi tweeted out that Damian said that the PS5 may come out in the 2nd half of 2018 in September 2016.

PS4 Pro? Wait, what about PS5? Macquarie's Damian Thong who correctly predicted PS4 slim and Pro says PS5 may arrive in 2nd half of 2018.

There's was articles about it during that time, but I don't think any major outlet picked up the story.

Does Damian Thong have any insider information? Some people are saying that he really didn't predict the consoles because the rumors were around before he even said anything.

Come on now. PS3 cycle was 7 years, and PS4 is a much bigger hit. It continues to sell like mad, has tons of big hits in the pipeline, and PS4 Pro is so cutting edge it would be impossible to have a generational leap next year. 2020 earliest.

If this is true, and has full BC, but is for some reason Vega/Zen

honestly, RIP MS

anyway back in the real world...

Sure, but you can't justify a new piece of hardware with "we can now render more enemies at once" to the mainstream audience. 4K, as dumb as that kinda is, is super important for the marketing of those machines. 8K would be the next step but people aren't even upgrading to 4K at this point. It'll be tough to communicate a new gen, for sure.

What if it's a PS4 Pro-Pro. To convince all the people that weren't convinced to buy a PS4 Pro. Going the way of phone upgrades.

I'd guess 2019. It needs to be a reasonable leap over the Pro and Scorpio at a reasonable price if it's going to sell like PS4.

this thread is about the next playstation though, and it had a lifespan of 7

Which is still like a year and a half longer than ever other PS gen and most other consoles. Expecting gens to be longer than last is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

I know that seems somewhat intuitive but that's not going to happen.
Exactly. When Pro was rumored people on these forums were so eager to give their money to Sony every 2 years for iterative upgrades. I remember reading nonsense like it would be great if Sony was like Apple. Now that there is rumor of a PS5, people are saying it would be a slap in the face to Pro owners. What???? Shouldn't Pro owners be the most excited for a new Sony console next year??

PS3 was in a different time. Besides, there's no cell chip or custom components like that in the PS4. The upgrade path is quite straight forward.

But ps4 will also still be available, they could just have ps5 for 60 FPS gaming.

Most gamers, if you ask them to choose between 1800c60 and 2160p30, the 60 FPS checker board would win every single time.

Many AAA big budget open world games just scrape 30 FPS at the moment, Pro and Scorpio wont change that they are both too weak.

Holiday 2019, zen console is my prediction. 60 FPS gaming !

Every 2 years? I remember most saying every 3.

Some Pro owners would be excited since some are obviously huge PlayStation fans but I think many others would feel screwed. What was the point in spending $400 if the PS5 (the true successor) was going to be announced not even two years after the Pro released?

Playstation is the only successful thing Sony has going for it at the moment, so it really makes sense for them to have more frequent hardware releases. I bet most people on this forum complaining about a PS5 in 2018 will be first in line to buy one because of the games it will have.

I'm pretty sure it'll just be a slimmer PS4 Pro, although I wouldn't be surprised if Sony released a 3rd PS4 spec to compete with Scorpio. I don't expect PS5/infinity until 2020.

how is just a year and a half "far too long" then the usual gen? anyways like i said with the first post, I thought the point of the Ps4 pro was to elongate the gen

People buy consoles to not have to deal with that bs. Only way they do this is because of what microsoft is up too thus forcing their hand. I hope that does not happen.

If so please kill me, I can't afford it and it's so soon.

If ps5 launched in 2018, you would not be overly pressured to get it. For the first year, almost all games would have a ps4 "version". Or be technically ps4 games with a ps5 patch. Either way, ps4 support would have to stay strong. Ps5 would have to not rock the boat, and mostly just play the same games better.

That could work but I don't see it being necessary when they could wait till the ps4 is slowing down and release ps5 to more demand. But we don't know what they are thinking really and stranger things have happened.

The PS4 is projected to sell another 18 million this fiscal year, the next fiscal year its probably going to be projected to sell another 15 million, i dont see the need for a PS5 in 2018, its just going to slow down the PS4 for no reason. Sony will wait until 2019.

He's probably just look at this from a "5 year generational cycle" point of view.

No way. Dev kits go out late 2019 with the new console releasing in 2020 or 2021. This generation is just now hitting its stride.

Good point, it does exist now, its called ZEN and VEGA.

Why did Scorpio not have it ? - allot of posters thought it would really, especially zen, maybe MS should of waited another 6 months.

Or maybe Zen is a bit big for an APU to also have 6 TF though so it costs too much and needs a die shrink
or
maybe AMD wanted too much royalty for their new zen and vega technologies.....who knows ?

Zen and Vega is a next gen step and both are out this year apparently. . Zen and vega will run cooler than Jag and Polaris, so ....

So 2018/19 is not so crazy, and you would think Zen would be BC with Jaguar if effort is put in at a low level

A Ps5 with zen and Vega and full BC with Ps4 would be a killer blow.

Some form of Zen + Vega IP-wise would seem as the next logical step. The problem is that building a chip at this moment based on those and expecting a decent jump in performance would blow the chip size. My guess is that we won't see any radically changed console without the foundries (whether it's GloFo or TSMC) moving beyond 14/16nm. The question is when they will have the capacity for full production on whatever process it is they'll be using.

if this is true it'll be in response to the Scorpio release...Scorpio looks like a beast in terms of hardware and Sony needs to have a response
