PC Racing Sims Thread

Details here: https://www.studio-397.com/2017/04/roadmap-update-april-2017/

The new engine is not only the basis for our VR implementation, but it also enabled a new, improved HDR tone mapper and a bunch of post effects that greatly enhance the overall atmosphere of the simulation. We tried to strike a balance between using these effects to render the real-world imperfections of cameras while retaining the “first person view” you have when racing. At the same time we kept two very important goals in mind: we needed to ensure that, with the same graphics settings, the DX11 engine is at least as fast as the DX9 engine, and that existing content is still compatible with the new engine, so all the content out there can still be fully enjoyed

That said, we want to make sure that everybody is able to run this new build without a hitch, which is why we are making the initial release available as an “open beta.” Starting May 1st, anybody can switch to the beta build

I've been anxiously awaiting the DRM Revival for Assetto Corsa but it could still be a while before it releases. I had nearly forgot that I own rFactor on Steam so I figured I would install it and try out the original DRM Revival mod. Well I downloaded it and the Cart Factor mod as I wanted to see how it compares to the revamped AMS version. I've read a lot about how I need to have multiple installs of rFactor if I want to have multiple mods installed but that seems a little complicated, though I am wanting to try out the GTPC mod and Historx among others. Any hints on what to do or have I already screwed up by installing these two mods (they both work fine)?

Also, does rFactor not use Real Feel? The FFB is pretty bad IMO and I have way too much steering rotation with my G27.

In terms of looks and material quality, probably, but I found it quite uncomfortable. They have done something very strange with the 'thumb indent' area - it's very slightly too tight, particularly when wearing gloves. The real 918 RSR wheel doesn't have that shape, so I'm not sure what possessed them to do that.

You are 100% right. Tried it last night and it's uncomfortable (also wearing gloves). Kinda wish I had gotten something else (I guess I'm still on time to return, maybe?)

I love iracing I just have two problems with it

I can't seem to get any better, especially on ovals
and
the UI

Good to see iracing fixing the only problem that they can that I have with it

www.virtualracingschool.com offers NASCAR fixed series datapacks (National, Trucks, XFinity and Monster Cup (Gen6) ) and driver coaching by Ray Alfalla, 3-time NASCAR PEAK Antifreeze champion and his teammate Bryan Blackford in Slip Angle Motorsports.

If you're willing to give it a go, VRS lets you use the telemetry/driving analyzer for a 4 hour period for free every week. (4 hours from the moment you start access IRL time.)

I love iRacing but its lack of a proper competitive hot-lapping mode is what makes me not play it much (or at all really), and it's the primary reason why I love R3E and Forza (lol) so much. I never cared much for racing real people, but Time Attack - coupled with the new UI - sounds very promising.

Cheers for this. I'd seen it advertised in iracing but never checked it out. I reckon I'll give it a shot

thanks

Why do you need to lol at Forza? Do we have to be ashamed if we like Forza now?

Wow that new UI and time attack look awesome! So my only question is, is Time Trial going to be eliminated? Does anyone know about this? I just wonder since it might be confusing to many people having both Time Trial and Time Attack.

So the throttle/clutch potmeter on my T500/T3pa Pro broke. After a few rounds on Google the situation seemed dire, as Thrustmaster seemingly takes ages to answer, and the new pots are expensive.

I contacted them anyway, and one week after first contact they sent me a brand new potmeter, free of charge.

Don't know if this will help anyone, but if your potmeters are getting bad, Thrustmaster will help you. :)

Time Trial is staying, because it is a way of improving your SR and gaining licence promotions (Time Attack will not affect SR).

How did you contact them, phone or support email?

I have a broken pot/hinge on my T3PAs and a dead load cell on my CSP V3s. I've been using G27 pedals for the last couple months because I've been too lazy to look into fixes/replacements lol.

Email via their technical support. I live in Norway, and the receipt for the pedals isn't even in my name.

Very positive experience.

Beyond the fancy DOF, which only has significance in replays (and could result in a major step forward for broadcasting presentation), I'm not convinced.

There appear to be improvements in some of the comparison images they've released over the past few weeks, particularly in terms of colour balance, but to my eyes it still looks like the contrast is messed up, just in a different way to how it was before. Now all the darker areas around the wheels look too black, and that dusk(?) shot just... looks really odd.

It may be partly down to the new HDR management, and perhaps the exaggerated blackness is to enhance the brightness of a high sun, clear condition, which is what most of the daylight images seem to be showing. I haven't seen a fully overcast shot - hopefully that would reduce the harshness of the contrast.

Maybe it makes more sense in motion, but if that was the case, why aren't they showing it?

I do think it looks a bit more stylized, and perhaps more appealing to a lower common denominator. That's fine. I think that's probabaly the right way to go for this particular game.

It's always looked pretty good from behind the wheel. It's the soul crushingly flat replays that contribute most to the game looking like bum. Fix that, and I think you can change the perception.

I have noticed some bloom lighting, and other effects too which should all add up to be greater than the sum of parts.

Also: USF2000; best ffb ever? Best ffb ever.

Glad I'm not the only one here excited for the DX upgrade. iRacing did the same and we had a lot of happy people in this thread; rF2 simply doesn't have the same impact.
Looks like a new game!

Seems as though it's not an auto-download though and it needs to be opt-into under the Steam-rF2 Beta Preferences.

Release Notes

We’ll start these release notes with a few hints on how to setup the DX11 graphics (regardless of VR):

In the same config window where you set your ‘Video Settings’ you have a drop down for post effect levels. Post effects provide you with some exciting new graphical options that look great, but as with any graphics option, need to be balanced against a good framerate. Therefore, we recommend you start at a conservative level (none or low), and if you have a graphics card of the latest generation, try the higher ones (medium or high). The highest setting (ultra) gives the best quality effects, but will also require a really fast graphics card. Note that even the “None” setting gives a better graphical quality than the DX9 graphics we had before! An overview of the levels:

None
Low = Glare Effects
Medium = Glare Effects and Depth of Field
High = All Effects at High Quality
Ultra = All Effects at Ultra Quality

At this point we would also like to thank the people from YEBIS for providing a great library to work with. It has definitely contributed to the overall look of the end product.

With the DX11 implementation we also introduced new features to improve many aspects of the final output:Improved MSAA rendering.
Improved Clouds resolution and depth.
Static AO; This is adding Occlusion to bottom of objects and cars. It does improve the overall depth in the environment.
Dynamic AO. This is adding a subtle low-frequency Ambient Occlusion to the scene and cars, improving the “connection” between terrains and structures in the scene, and also balancing cockpits brightness.
Shadows Normal renders shadows, taking into account the shadow receiver normal map.
A new Tone mapper which improves both colors and histogram, a perfect companion for our dynamic weather/sky engine!
New Car Ambient Shadow, now working for the entire 24h cycle.
Fixed some “pixel” artifacts caused by invalid calculations in shaders.
Dedicated dynamic exposure simulation for each main camera set.
Realistic simulation of Depth Of Field, Lens Flare, Bloom and other Optical aberrations, with scalable options.
Track Lights and Car Headlights now can use the realtime glare simulation and get rid of the old technology and custom shaders.
New Shader for car Dashboards, Rev Meters and Motecs.

Content updates as part of this initial build. To get these, you need to subscribe to the workshop items (because of technical reasons we had to move them to the Studio 397 account):

The USF2000, Nissan GT500, Howston G4 and G6, Dallara DW12 and the Stock Cars have been updated with new shaders, better headlights and overall better textures.
Atlanta Motorsports Park, Silverstone, NOLA Motorsports Park, Mores and Indianapolis Motor Speedway have all gotten texture updates, and we painted the curbs at Silverstone in the current colors too!

Modding:

There are new guidelines for content creators, please make sure you read them here https://www.studio-397.com/guidelines-for-artists/

That YEBIS effect..frame rate has taken a massive hit with the post processing on just like AC and every game Milestone has released using the same PP. Shame to as the added effects look subtle but okay although the glare often require welding goggles.

S397 must have a monster SLI set-up for the pre-release video as my 1070 is struggling to hold 60fps with 20 GT500 cars at Mores with default TOD. The beta, when using post processing, needs a lot more work IMO.

PS: I don't understand why rF2 shows my GTX1070 with minus 1024MB of memory! rF2 has always reported the GPU RAM weirdly for me. At least now my 16GB of system RAM is shown correctly.

Edit: S397 have their own updated content in the Steam Workshop - http://steamcommunity.com/id/studio-397/myworkshopfiles/?appid=365960

Yeah the DX11 update hit my rig pretty hard too (3570K + 970 + 8GB RAM) while running 1440p. I never monitored the framerate but it felt like it was in the 40s or so with just one car on Silverstone. G-Sync helps but not quite enough. I really want to upgrade my rig and this gives me more of a reason cause it's already somewhat struggled to run AC at 60+ fps with weather/cloud mods.

Was post processing on or off? If it was on, what level did you choose to run? Running without PP in DX 11 mode should, in theory, offer a more consistent frame rate.

A few forum members on RD are saying a full reinstall using just the DX 11 build fixed their issues but I'm not 100% certain that is a fix.

There is a lot of work to be done as trying to get the CPU occupancy stats up with CTRL+c and it worked once and won't come back up whereas CTRL+F just gives the fps but not the GPU usage.

The joys of a very early beta!

I had it on low just to see how it looked but I never tried it again with it off. I can't seem to get the FFB feeling good in RF2 so I wind up not playing it very long. I think most of the issue is the G27 and its gears but RF2 makes it feel very 'grindy'.

On my 1080, I can run every setting at Max with 35 car grids. I was not able to do this on DX9, where I had to turn a few options down a notch. So for me, not only does this look better, it runs smoother too. I can't imagine there's that much of a gap between a 1080 and 1070, so perhaps that reinstallation you mentioned might help!

Do you have post processing on or off?

I did a race in a downpour/storm in the 2000 spec formula cars at NOLA with 22AI and was sitting at 90fps with ultra PP. Change to Mores in the Corvette in sunshine and the frames drop to 55fps when leaving the pits and climbing to 100+. Silverstone with the GT500 improved to 70fps in the pits and 120+ on track.

1080 is likely to be 10% - 20% better as the 1070 is closer to a 980ti with extra vram.

I'm wanting to upgrade to a 7700K+1080ti+16GB RAM so hopefully that would fix any performance issues with racing sims.
