Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE |OT| Do You Remember MegaTen?

Tsubasa gets wrecked in the first battle and I'm stuck with one character to fight with who gets destroyed in my first random encounter.

Well I guess there's no free turn spam this time around.....

Edit: Holy Shit stat growths are random? Well I see where FE comes from.

Just beat the game!

Party was around 59-62. Last fight was pretty easy, but the event leading up to it was amazing.

This was one of the few jrpgs I've beaten in a looong time. Surprised at my final playtime of 60 hours.

I really liked all the characters and how cheesy/happy it was. The whole cast was great.

I hope this game gets another chance on the Switch, or a continuation of some sort. There's more things about the entertainment industry they could focus on.

I would love if they can make something related to the Manga/Anime industry. I think it can be quite interesting.
But if it is ported on Switch, I might buy it again.

How do you people get through RPGs so fast? My support cast is at 59 right now and I have 99 hours lol.

I have no idea. I started using the thing that made enemies not show up as much since battles took so long because of sessions. Did all side quests for the main cast/3 supporting NPCs as well haha.

65 hours for me on Normal with all party/NPC sidestories completed. Maybe you just like to take your time? I didn't spend very much time in the arena, though.

Same. The Arena was uhh I dunno. As much as I liked the battle system, sessions seriously makes the game drag on.

Not sure how there is 99 hours worth of content through a single playthrough. Getting to bosses for sidequest are easy since they are usually next to teleport spots.

Finished. I forgot to pick up my reward for sending all the mirages to the arena. Ah well I can load up my pre-final boss save to see what I would have gotten.

Just wanted to say that the final enemy itself was sort of ho hum in terms of what it was (
a dragon. Alright
). The fight itself was fine. I like that I really had to get everyone on the dance floor which I never did before. Probably because my main character was good mostly for support in this case (item giver). Probably the coolest thing about the battle was the
Opera of Something. That Fire Emblim remix with vocals?!?!? Holy crap that got me pumped up and the whole idea to do that is just right on.
. The post final boss stuff - it wa s little sad to say
goodby to Tiki and the mirages. they are your buds and anchors the whole time after all
. Then the credits play and you learn what happened after. I'm glad that Itsuki
became the president as it does seem like his leadership was his strongest quality rather than being a performer
. Good for Maiko to
go back to modeling. She's too striking to just be sitting behind a desk.
I also like how Kiria made the word "kakkokawaii" a universal thing. YES!

Enough of the moe moe kyun though.

Soundtrack - I like the idol themed tunes. I really dug the main remix of the Fire Emblem tune. The one that plays every time a character has a personal growth. And then the vocal FE theme was great.

Characters - They are a little more like cartoons than people. It's anime and embraces that. It's also lighthearted even when certain things are played up to be serious. I like the cast. At the same time I can't say I had as close a connection to them like I have in the Persona games. But as a fan of music and film I do like that their worlds revolve around the entertainment industry. Barry #1. Seriously funny moments surrounding him. But dude. Mamori is 11. I didn't even know she was that young. So chill Barry.

Gameplay - Yeah this to me was a big win over Persona 3 and 4. I never grew tired of the combat here even when taking a longer time in some dungeons. The dungeons themselves are a step up too from 3 and 4. The one thing that could have been patched wa s away to skip the animations for the sessions or a fast forward for the animations. This becomes an issue for sessions that can sometimes reach the double digits.

Finally, I liked the game. I thought is was very good and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a Persona like experience that is more easygoing in terms of atmosphere. Or if you love idol culture then it's a no brainer. The actual main plot is whatever. The parts that are interesting are the characters doing their thing during the intermissions. Oh and I didn't bring up the overworld. Nothing to really say. It's nice spending time in parts of Tokyo. Not an open world experience in any way. It's just little chunks the same way how Persona 3 and 4 work.

So, I've been playing this game relatively slowly because I'm recording it for a YT channel.

Does it get better? Just got to the bit with
Barry's heel turn
and while that's interesting, every other bit of plot has been fucking torture. Playing this inbetween Persona 5 has really solidified how meh it is.

It doesn't get better in the way you wish it to be. The story and characters are saccharine, and the game doesn't really have any deep message or compelling thematic it's going for. This is true for the whole game.

I think you are halfway through. Does it get better? I think it does. There are still party members to come and I don't think at this time you have access to the (I don't know what they are called exactly but you know what I mean with how I describe it) duet sessions bonuses. The next dungeon I think is pretty cool. On top of this you will later get more access to all the dungeons. Let's say at this point each dungeon is about half open to you.

EDIT: oh the plot. No no. It's this kind of style through and through. I mean there are a few moments where I get a little misty eyed, but it's more because I'm just really happy for a character fulfilling something. The day with Tiki in
the real world was so, I don't know, she just wanted to have donuts for real and I was kinda touched by that haha.
She's just so deserving.

Nope. You should definitely move on.

TMS>Persona, for the record.

Eh, I haven't given SMT a fair shake. I bought DDS1 back when and barely touched it, but I've been meaning to.

That said, the plot in SMT4 seems barely there, at best.

The gameplay in TMS is okay, I guess. The dungeons contribute to the overall pacing problem, though. They're simply too long, and the "x_____x IM SO EMBARRASSED" two-hour long breaks are even worse. Not really looking forward to battles being 35 minutes each of endless session chaining, either.

Edit: Wait a minute, TMS is better than Persona? You're straight up lying to yourself, dude.

Some posters on the previous page played like 40 hours less than I did. I guess it's worth making use of some the items or skills that prevent lower level enemies from popping up or forcing the savage/rare ones to come up more often for quicker leveling up. Just some thoughts. I spent so much time on my playthrough because of my enjoyment of the battle system. Beating the savage enemies is huge for obtaining Detritus which allows you to then upgrade certain stats on your characters (if your character is missing attacks, bump up their SKL stat) I botched up Mamori when I removed her Surefire for something else and her SKL was a little low for the final dungeon. In the arena idolosphere it's the purple ghost. He's one of the first recruits if I remember correctly. He's the guy that trades stats upgrades for detritus.

TMS definitely has better combat and dungeons than Personas 1-4, but 5 took the crown back.

I really hope this game gets an updated re release or even a sequel. It was really fun and too good to let it rot on the Wii u

Well Press Turn is the GOAT RPG system.
I actually don't understand why people think Press Turn is so great.

1) Encounter new enemy.
2) Use random spells until you find a weakness.
3) Always get double turns on the characters that can exploit that weakness, and play the same otherwise.

It doesn't have a deep strategic element to it.

Nah, Grandia is still the best for me, Grandia 3's implementation in particular.
Grandia has the best combat system along with Chrono Trigger. A Grandia x CT combat system would be incredible. Is Grandia 3 actually worth playing? I liked 2, but then I played Xtreme and it was the one of the worst I have ever played (for non-combat reasons).

It all depends on the focus i guess? For those who don't like wasting day by day doing social link, TMS is actually the solution there. U can have relation with every character without any need of worrying that u are going to miss something and it is snappy fast.^^

For the battle system and dungeon design, it is 100% better than P3 and P4. Not sure on P5 here.

I loved the session attacks, just wish they were sped up. It takes soooo long if you get a duet attack thingy, then procs another....

I know watching and playing a game are different, but watching my roommate play Persona 5, I'm not sure I could play it. Seems like it takes waaaaay too long.

Does P5 also had the same unskipable Session scene?O_O

Personally, I don't like the social part of Persona and the time limit associated to it. I've enjoyed much more TMS because I've got time to enjoy it.
I've never tried SMT, but I'm wondering if I should try one.

If you have a PS2 or PS3 you should definitely try out Nocturne. It can still be had for $20 physically on PS2 or $10 digitally on PS3.

Ok. I definitively give it a try. I'm on Xenoblade Chronicle X for the moment and I'm not fast. But I'm enjoying it.

No they have a thing if you use a weakness, enemies get knocked out. If the whole enemy party is knocked out you get an all out attack thing.

My too long comment was that my roommate was at 40 hours when he got to the 3rd dungeon or something like that.

IV was meh, but Apocalypse was amazing.
I believe that IV deserves more credit than most seem willing to give it, but can concede that IV:A mostly plays better. The tone and focus on story and characterization of IV:A are atypical for mainline SMT, though will likely appeal more to players with a liking for games such as #FE and Persona.

Cosmic Star Heroine (Steam/PS4/... XB1 soon) is the new GOAT for me. Indie game made by a GAFer, you should check it out. I don't think there's a better turn based system out there.

Hey guys, should I give this another go? I got to the tutorial boss and stopped playing.
The game is pretty fun if you love Japanese stuff. It was a ton fan having one of the characters obsessed with Kamen Rider(basically) and all the singing and dancing scenes are both rediculous and awesome. It's maybe not as meaty as other JRPGs especially on the atlus side of things but if you already own it then play it.

The battle system opens up around the third dungeon and the game is overall well paced. It's around 50 hours and the progression of systems opens gradually in a satisfying way. It also has a much better implementation of text messaging than P5.

That said, it was a mere appetizer for P5. The story and characters, while inoffensive, are pretty vapid. Also, battle animations, while stylish, get a bit long near the end.

It's a breezy and light adventure that is surprisngly addicting, but it doesn't leave much of an impact.

Wow, I had no idea this game even existed. Sounds cool.

Wish I had a Wii U.

Haha, same here. Well, I thought it was a 3DS game and only heard about it in the Persona 5 thread (praise for the battlesystem).

Bought it on Saturday and now I am already 8 hours in at the final Boss in the first "real" Dungeon. Game is fun so far. Chars are a bit lame, but the game has it funny moments and the battles are enjoyable.

I remember when some people really set out to smear this game based on footage of the shenanigans before the final boss without context.

/Smh

A) it didn't come out of no where in context
B) it is amazing in or out of context

Dropped this around chapter 3 or 4 i think, i'm in the dungeon that looks like a
japanese garden or something like that iirc (haven't been playing it in months)
but i'm thinking of getting back to it after P5 became one of my favorite games ever. I don't really remember the plot very well but i don't want to start it over.

I know it sounds silly but other than having problems with the pacing one thing i couldn't stand was using the gamepad to handle the messages. My analog stick is fucked and battery lasts less than two hours now, so playing with the pro controller and keeping the gamepad close only to read messages is a chore, especially since i have to charge it all the time. Really wish you could play without it.

And i see people complaining about characters, yeah they might be a bit stereotyped but they're very likeable and the lighthearted story is pretty cool. Also having FE characters and the fantastic mechanics of the series in the equally fantastic SMT battle system were two of my favorite things in the game.
