I love Loaded. Maybe it's not as deep or polished as Shock Troopers or whatever the gold standard for overhead shooters is, but running around as 90's comic book characters splattering people to the tunes of Pop Will Eat Itself (and the original soundtrack isn't bad either) is simple base pleasure.

Re-Loaded is an huge piece of shit.

I remember liking Loaded back in the day. I rented it (lol). It was still a large box game then. I had two large box games (Tekken & NHL Face Off) but found a receipt that I traded them in for $0.01 each, F me.

No matter how utterly silly and heck, ugly the game is, I can't deny that it was a ton of fun back in the day.
Very gory as well especially for the time period.

I should dig around a bit as I remember picking up the sequel on PSone a couple of years ago for €5 along with some other games. Haven't played it yet though.
Looking at my list I bought it with the following games:
G-Police
Twisted Metal 1
Twisted Metal 2: World Tour

Which is kinda weird as I know I picked up Twisted Metal 1 and G-Police on release back in the day...
Must have somehow sold them or traded them in in the 90's for Saturn games I think. Really not sure there.
Hmm, same thing with Warhawk now that I think of it...
Somehow wanted to play them, couldn't find them anymore and remembered I got rid of a lot of "brown poly" games and exchange them for brue brue sky ones instead. Heck, it made sense at the time. ;)
Then bought them again years later, only to forgot I ever sold them. Damn you old age!!!! :p

When going through some PSone stuff I came across these two gorgeous little gems.

IMG_2249.jpg

When I came across Power Diggerz on store shelves early in 2002 I must have thought to myself: Taito? Sure I love Taito! lol
Glad I did as it's such a fun game. Wish we got a couple of sequels to it though.

It actually reminds me quite a bit of Ore no Ryouri in the way you have to use the controller.
Also one of my absolute favourite games on the system.

Had a very hard time hunting down Yoyo's Puzzle Park for some reason. Then when I finally found a copy in not so great shape for 25€, only 3 weeks later I came across a mint one for 20€. Figures... Bought that one as well.

Been listening to the Retro Game Squad podcast nr. 25 since I'm pretty obsessed with the Saturn again and I've been really enjoying it as I work on a new Sega Saturn Magazine.
Didn't know about the podcast till yesterday and sadly it seems defunct, but still.

To me Loaded was more Smash TV/Total Carnage than Mercs/Shock Troopers

It isn't either to me because the level design is all over the place. Some of the levels are these huge open areas where you need to collect a bunch of hidden items, some are linear point A to point B killfest, and some are in-between. I guess it owes more to PC shooters than any arcade games

But all of the games mentioned are shooters in bird-eyes view where you control a dude and kill people, so *shrug*

I played a bunch of Loaded and Blast Chamber around the same time back in the day, and then never have again, so I can never recall which is which by memory. Which may sound crazy side-by-side but when separated by 20 years it always takes me a minute to remember "rotating rooms, yep, right, got it."

Let's settle for Gauntlet like :p

Going through my collection, organising everything and seeing what I'm in the mood for playing, I came across this beauty.

BLOOD FACTORY! HELL YEAH! lol

I mean, I'm perfectly aware it's Loaded, but still... There's this little corner of my brain which - every time I see that cover artwork - pretends it's the non-existent Saturn version of Skeleton Krew, instead.

If you're looking for a cheap option, I really like this one by Namco:

It's a surprisingly great stick. It's body is made of metal.

Buttons are pretty good too.
I've debated this stick for a while, but I was under the impression it was pretty difficult to replace the buttons and stick, which makes me weary when buying hardware approaching 20 years old.

It feels pretty rugged but I'm using stock buttons and stick. Your mileage may vary.

I really like the Namco stick, the build quality seems really good. I bought one but haven't used it much since I think it has an octo-gate as standard.

Had a quick look at modding it, looks like the buttons are fairly simple to swap with sanwa buttons, I think seimetsu buttons might require some bending of the terminals though.

The stick looks like the hardest part to mod where you'd have to cut away some of the plastic moulding that houses the stock stick.

I've got the Namco stick as well as the Virtual Fighter 3 button stick for the PS2, but the one I prefer by a mile is the Virtual Stick.

I have the Saturn one that came with a Sanwa JLW. Cool stick!

Another cool Playstation stick: Konami Hyper Stick. It has full Seimitsu arcade-spec parts!

Ah, never seen that Konami one.

I've got the Saturn one as well. Which was the reason why I really wanted it for the Playstation as well.
The Saturn one was in poor shape though, so I model both of them myself with Sanwa parts, just like with my Dreamcast sticks.

I've been looking in to sticks for my PS2 for like a year and a half now and still haven't been able to make up my mind.

And I just spent 250$ on supplies for a new terrarium so I shouldn't be buying accessories right now.

A quality PS2 stick is expensive these days. That's why I went the direction I did with the Namco stick. Going from a Sanwa JLF to it wasn't as hard as you'd think. They did a really nice job with it. It's certainly way better than the other non-Sanwa/non-Seimitsu stick I use these days:

I can't stand the stock buttons on the green gobbler.

I love playing random games on the everdrive.

I put in batman forever on snes and what a weird game that is. Very repetitive and boring, but the mirtal kombat style combat is unique at least. And the charactera have a lot of frames of animation.

Well, both games have you play as a person and are pretty mediocre, so despite their significant differences (in one you have a gun and shoot things, while in the other you have rotating rooms and don't have guns, but instead have bombs and stuff) I guess I can see it?

The game is rightly considered to be pretty bad, both in its overly complex controls and its poor gameplay... but be glad you're playing it on console and not PC. The PC version's controls are somewhat hilariously terrible! (See bottom of first post for where I start covering the game.)

Here's the key part, the controls...
A Black Falcon said:
Finally, here are the controls for this game. No, they are not customizable. I'm not sure what all the keys are because I do not have the manual, just a CD in jewelcase, and this game does not have any kind of readme or in-game help, so this is just what I managed to figure out by randomly pressing every key on the keyboard. Finding the grapple and drop-through-floor keys took a while!

left/right arrow keys or numpad 4/6 or joystick left/right - move left/right
arrow key up or numpad 8 or joystick up - jump
arrow key down or numpad 2 or joystick down - duck
arrow key 5 or a joystick button - block
End, 1, or 3 or a joystick button - punch (maybe different types?)
Page Down, 7, or 9 or 2 joystick buttons - kick (maybe different types?)
Insert - grappling hook
Insert+arrow Up/numpad 8 (hit at exactly same time for this to work) - grapple up to next platform above (if at right point)
Delete+arrow Down/numpad 2 (hit at exactly same time for this to work) - drop to next platform below (if at right point)
Esc - Quit to main menu. If there is a pause button, I can't find it - this ends your game, start again from the beginning!
Alt+Q - Quit game.

Yes, really.

Yes, really.

The grapple has that very strict timing as well on console. Up jumps, so up and select for the grapple to a higher level has to be input just far enough apart, but not at the same time, and not too far apart.

I love the way that looks. I need to pick one up one day.

They are super easy to mod as well btw.
The only thing you might have to do is make the holes for the buttons a little bit bigger with an iron file, depending on which ones you pick up.

I'd actually want to try and pick another one of these up to mod for a Saturn as I love these so much.
But I'm not the most handy guy so I'm not sure if it's a good idea to possibly break a Saturn Joypad or stick in the process...

Nice colour schemes, meppi! I like how the white one is so understated. Do you know if the start button can be swapped?

I'm about to attempt this mod, going for an all pink scheme sort of like the all pink astro city setup.

I wanted to go with a white and a blue one to coincide with the European Dreamcast cold scheme. :)

I had to look up if there actually was an extra start button on the back or not as I didn't really remember.
Seems like I put one in myself as I don't see it on any of the ones on ebay.
Probably just split two wires of the original start button and put the one on the back parallel over it.

Figured the blue was for the European swirl, I like it!

I was thinking about swapping the yellow start button but I think it's a custom mold, a light grey one that matched the case would look great I think.

Yeah it seems like a custom one. You can always try and remove it, then paint it, but I'm not sure how that would work out.

Anyone else subscribe to Retro Gamer (the UK mag) in the US? Last year all my issues came like clockwork 3 weeks after they started shipping in the UK. Since January it's been 6 - 8 weeks for an issue to arrive. Is anyone else experiencing the same or has it just been my luck?

I live in Italy and I'm still waiting the march issue. Recently, they are having a lot of problems, I'm thinking of switching to digital edition.

Been looking at the Toro Dreamcast VGA box to replace my current one.

Since the framemeister doesn't have a via input and D-terminal cables are really hard to come by over here I was thinking my best option would be to get a vga to component cable, then a component to d-terminal cable (which is a bit easier to find) and hook it up that way.

But I came across the Toro and now I'm wondering if I read it correctly that RGB scart output on it can carry both the RBG signal as well as the VGA one?
Meaning I would be able to play both VGA incompatible games as well as RGB incompatible games through the same RGB scart lead?

I'm probably wrong with this as it sounds too good to be true.

Can anyone clarify?

I thought about making a new thread about this, but I think I know what'll happen if I do... all out Sony Vs Nintendo world war. lol

Anyway, I played BotW and Horizon ZD back to back. I have to say the inevitable comparisons for me have been interesting. I think, (personally, in my opinion, from my point of view, my take... etc.) that Horizon is the better game. I think enemy encounters are more fun in Horizon, and that makes all the difference. Also, there are non aggressive optional tutorials that help you understand how to apply weapons to enemies. Where Zelda tries to force you to use different weapons with the durability method, Horizon has enemies that are literally built for you to use a broader range of weaponry. Plus, the greater variety of enemy designs certainly adds another dimension to the "open world feel" to HZD.

They both have rather lackluster NPCs, but the fully voiced ones in HZD make them feel a bit more substantial.

This isn't to say BotW didn't do some things better in my mind. The music, horse stables, and clothing customization are some examples of things lacking in HZD. Overall though, I just feel more at home with Sony'/GG's open world action adventure.

xrgb mini takes both 15/31khz through scart, can vouch for it working well.

Exactly that, if you dont have a vga port on your tv then its a great all in one solution. Below is a good review to give you a clearer overview.

https://www.videogameperfection.com/2016/02/05/toro-vga-box-review/

Oh thank you for that! :)

Saw a couple of articles and videos for it but certain things remained unclear as I'm not the most technical person. ;)

Been trying to revive a broken Saturn I was given many years ago.
Just received the replacement laser and put it in, but I'm pretty sure the previous owner had opened it up and messed with it quite a bit.

I got the drive to spin and the motor to scan the discs, but so far it doesn't read them.
I don't even get any messages saying that the drive is empty or that the disc is not suitable for the system or anything like that.
Will have to go through every possible setting on those 4 white screws on the side of the drive compartment.
It sounds off when it spins up, although it sounded much worse before.
The thing must be misaligned as hell. Going to be a tough one this one... It being an old Japanese model 1 with the power supply strapped to the lid doesn't make it any easier either.
But still, I don't want to throw out a Saturn that otherwise seems to work fine.

If all else fails, I'll just keep it till an overdrive like mod appears. My copy of Batsugun already has a pinhole in it so I'm starting to get a bit worried.

The encounters in Horizon are crazy intense, it's very fun. My biggest gripe is that Aloy has no inner monologue and speaks out loud to herself whenever something happens like a poorly written character in a book. But if that's the biggest problem I have with the game, you can tell there's a lot that's positive.

I will play BotW eventually when I get another Switch down the line, but I'm not especially dying to play it. Especially with the weapon durability system the way it is.

So I could play every game through the single RGB lead then? That's fantastic! Just ordered one. :D

The Toro is great, just be careful with the cable connecting the Dreamcast to the unit itself. I've had to have mine replaced from nothing more than typical operation.

The GDEMU guy makes a Saturn SD card mod. It's phenomenal. There's two versions depending on your model but I would keep an eye out for the five minute window when he makes them available periodically.

If you're hooking it up to an XRGB Mini, I'd just wait until Behar Bros. releases their Dreamcast HDMI box instead. Your HDTV will likely scale 480p much more cleanly than the Framemeister. And it will likely be less laggy.

It appears to also support 240p, but I'm not sure how that will play over HDMI on most TVs. Still I'd opt for this box then switch to a standard dreamcast SCART cable for 240p rather grab a Toro. I own a Toro myself and really don't like how it looks over the XRGB mini.

The mini just does a really poor job at handling 480p compared to every HDTV I've seen.

The Toro is great, just be careful with the cable connecting the Dreamcast to the unit itself. I've had to have mine replaced from nothing more than typical operation.

Same here. Bad build quality in my humble opinion. The customer service is okay so it's not the worst thing in the world. But still, they live in Turkey (I think?) so returning items is a bit of a pain.

Thanks for that everyone!

I looked into the Akura but came across something on the shmups board about it not sampling the full resolution of the image the Dreamcast puts out. Which the Toro apparently does do.
Might look into an Aura later down the line though.
the main reason for getting the Akura instead of buying 2 new convertor cables for my ol VGA box is so that I don't have to swap every time I run into a game that doesn't support VGA or RGB output. So I would just end up plugging in the box once and leaving it like that.

I had no idea there already was an SD card mod out for the Saturn. I expected it to be quite a way off still.

Truth be told, I never play emulators (unless official ones with rereleases and such) or copied games so on the one side I'm not too keen on it.
Yet on the other side, seeing disc rot in action before my eyes, it's absolutely necessary at this point.

They sent me a replacement at no charge, which is cool. Still, WTF man, damn thing was just sitting there and gave out...

Emulation of the cd drive function being plugged into real hardware is a world away from emulation of the hardware to be played on a pc though.

That's certainly true.
I've always preferred to play on the original hardware anyway, so for me that's really the best case scenario in all of this.

When I go back to this store if it's still there I'm going to buy the R.O.B. It's incomplete

Should ask a million and one questions about sega cd but I don't think it's worth it unless I get one professionally recapped, laser aligned and all that nice stuff.

To have a broken a sega cd that I can't use sucks lol

My CDX started outputting a noisier signal than normal lately. Pretty sure it isn't the cable, is there anything specific to look for or anything useful to try?

Hows your power? Do you have a backup UPS or some sort of filter you can plug it into? I have Noisy outlets in my house that cause video noise on my consoles!

Although I'm not familiar with the schematics of a CDX a likely culprit would be a failing capacitor. What sort of power adapter does the CDX use? That could be the culrprit as well.

Been playing Panzer Dragoon Zwei all evening.
Not sure if I still got my original PAL save, but I started a new one on my Japanese copy.
Stage 5 gave me a bit of trouble as it always does after being away from the game for a while, but I ended up completing it.
But not in such a way that was good enough to unlock Pandora's Box it seems.
Guess that leaves something for tomorrow night. ;)

Stage 3 seemed a bit less impressive the first time through than I remember it being.
But stage 4 still blows my mind.
I don't know what it is but that water effect for me has always been something out of this world. That level remains till this day one of the most wonderful vistas I've seen in a game.
After stumbling through the game the first time I went straight back into the first stage and things certainly started to click into place a lot better. Seemed a lot more frantic as well, especially after going with the on foot section in stage 2 instead of through the air.
Now I want to go explore every route again but it's almost 2AM yet again...

Been home the last 3 weeks with a shoulder injury and this week has been one of the more memorable ones I've had in quite a while.
Playing Sega Rally 1995 till the early hours one day, NiGHTS into Dreams the next day till even later in the night. A ton of Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2 on Dreamcast and tonight Panzer Dragoon Zwei.

Even though we have it quite good when it comes to gaming this day and age, I would give just about anything replace it all to have Sega back and as creative as they were between 1995 and 2002...

cross posting from the ps2 thread

So I impulse bought a NTSC-J SCPH-90006 ps2 on the cheap. It's a slim version with the power supply inside. The back calls for 220-240v @ 50Hz. I'm in the US so I've got 120v @ 60Hz. I'm thinking I need a transformer. I've searched around and some places say it's a 110-240v psu but I don't wan to risk it. Anyone running this model on 120v?
