The vibe between Lewis and Seb is pretty damn magnanimous so far. They're clearly enjoying the contest.

Defo looks good for each of them to be competing so closely with the other, as probably the two dominant drivers of the era. Both will appreciate the comparison for sure.

Ferrari lost the race when they decided to stay out on the VSC. Good race.
Happy for Force India, Ocon best "rookie" by a mile.
Perez to Ferrari plz.
Pascal driver of the day, he deserves a better car.

Would like to see Wehrlein in a Williams or Force India next year. I don't think the doubts about how good he was were ever really justified, he's clearly massively outperforming the car.

You said that Hamilton's tyres wouldn't last until the end? Avatar bet?

No I didn't believe they would but Vettel stopped again so it's a moot point.

The other fella said these tyres could do a race distance, absolute bollocks. Yeah you could stick them on 100 old tyres and they would do the race distance but you'd be very slow. If you could last the whole race and win everyone would be one stopping wouldn't they.

Wehrlein really outperformed in that car today. That sauber had no right to be in the top 10 today.

Yeah.
The Hamilton-Rosberg rivalry seemed oddly frosty compared to now.
I honestly think they became toxically sick of racing each other. I think they've been doing it since age 12 if not younger. Not to mention that Hamilton and Vettel aren't teammates, they don't have to force themselves to be nice or PC, they probably just enjoy the challenge and lack of politics more to be honest.

When your team mate, who based on last season is past his best, has two tangles on-track, pits once more than you, has to do most of the first lap with a puncture and still beats you. I imagine Stroll's money is enough to keep his seat for the rest of the year but Williams have already got to be looking for other options. I wonder if Renault will drop Palmer sooner rather than later as well?

This really shows just how much Mercedes were cruising in the last three years and the difference now is simply that another team is on their "way out in front" level so both teams have to push.

When you lay it all out like that - "oof!".

For a race that saw the cars spread out to a staggering degree (and there was a time during it when I feared 'Sochi: Redux'), it was nonetheless packed with drama of all kinds. I had a blast with this one, all told.

Edit: And check out that Force India points haul! I like Ricciardo and Verstappen a whole bunch, but man, can you imagine if FI actually ran down RBR in the points?

Mercedes pulled a brilliant move by waiting to pit Hamilton until the very end of the VSC period.

Ferrari wanted to mirror Mercedes. If they stayed out and Mercedes pitted then they would be way below the pit delta on slower or equal compound. If they pitted and Mercedes stayed out then they would have to catch Hamilton on equal compound.

Ferrari tries to mirror Mercedes at the last moment and misses out on the VSC benefit.

I don't see Williams dumping Stroll any time soon. He paid a fuckload of money.

I was surprised by Sauber in this race. I thought they would fall further behind during the season with that old engine.

They could have had both cars in the points if Ericsson hadn't been unlucky with the timing of the VSC.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
I've got better Ray Bans than Vettel. He didn't even stump up for the polarising lenses...

Retract the championship money they will miss out on and consider how much of an obstacle he is for the team to achieve good results. It's only a matter of time before the numbers don't add up.

Stroll isn't going anywhere any time soon. He and his father are dead set on making sure he has career in F1. They aren't going to give up after spending the amount of money that they have.

Makes me always wonder how much of a burden is it on people that they know they are only there because of the money they bring to the team.

It's a bit sadistic, but I'd love for Alonso's car to fail at Indy and for Button to grab a podium.

I really don't know why Mercedes used old engine in bottas car this race when next race is Monaco. They could have used new one in this race and put the old engine to Monaco. Considering the nature of that track maybe the engine would had lasted.

They have power unit upgrades coming down the pike that they want to introduce without any penalties.

Not that it matters now.

I thought I heard they had to swap out the one in Bottas' car due to a water leak??

ah here we go

Well no, three faster cars dropped out from the race. That pushed slower cars to front.

Still, kudos to WEH, KVY and GRO, they all drove well.

If he's maldonado the whole contract, sure. They didn't bring him on to punt after a year. He's young and did have a promising junior career.

Palmer has been racing as long as Hulkenburg I believe, he shouldn't be shit.

Williams without Stroll would have to finish 1st or 2nd in the championship to offset his lost sponsorship money ($35 million). Good luck with that.

Or the other way around: with Stroll they can finish dead last in constructors and still get more money than being 3rd.

Williams need the money, unfortunately.

Then again, I'd love to know what they're spending it on because that car has seen no significant development in years. I swear they just made it wider for 2017.

Paddy Lowe's salary maybe? Crash damage?

Not quite that simple. Being at the front means more premium sponsorship fees.

Yeah, I know (I forgot to mention that, actually), negative PR, less visibility and so on, but I only touched on constructors money, which is the only 100% sure and reliable aspect.

Your point does put it in a little perspective. Either about how out of control pay driver money is, or the poor distribution of funds.

He looked like a giant of a man on that podium. Has to be at least 250 and over 6'5.

Anway. At this point, it seems clear that Ferrari is better in racing stints than the Merc, while the Mercs have a power advantage that bears fruit in qualifying.

Strange you mention that considering Hamilton was able to follow Vettel all the way through the initial stint of the race and seemingly bluff Vettel into an early stop. I'd say the cars were pretty much even today.

Then again Hamilton might have disappeared into the distance had he come out of the first corner in first place so who knows. I was not surprised Vettel was not able to pull away given the FP 1 long stints the teams were putting in - track evolution not withstanding.

Watching the FIA Formula E Championship in Monaco. It's so cool to hear those electric motors wind up.

I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoy the failure of "Wonderboy 2" project. I don't like when you can get to F1 thanks to connections, but if you deliver, no problem. If you don't, well, I laugh a little bit.

Strolls thought they cound buy their way in to replicate more or less what Max has achieved, ignoring that Max is very special talent. "I won Formula 3 (I don't remember my dad bought this team for me with subservient team mates, sorry), I have Bott.... wait, it's this old Brazilian guy Massa driving the second car, it will be easy to look good next to him. I participated in testing programme not seen in 20 years, everything will be fine."

And then during 5th race of his rookie season, on the same track where pre-season testing took place, Massa is 1 second per lap quicker and finishes in front of Stroll, even though he was 50 seconds behind at the end of lap 2. Majestic.
