Nintendo Switch Was the Best-Selling Video Game System in April; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Spirited

Mine is pretty and pink
Terrible numbers. I doubt scarcity is THAT of a problem. I don't think Is logical to think Nintendo is shipping a similar number of consoles in JPN and US.

¿que? It's not meeting demand and they are having problem with supplying, do you really believe demand is lower than supply already?

Well, I kinda want to buy a Switch, so if you're suggesting that there's a whole bunch of them sitting on store shelves unsold, hook me up.

I remember people saying in the switch stock thread that they were becoming more easily stocked in Germany at the biggest retailer now.

Maybe it's improved by now for May numbers but who knows.

This was the big shipments for 11th May, we are now back to stock problems.

It's looks like they haven't been able to let improved production numbers come through in April, since these numbers are really low. From what we know from Japan and anecdotally from the Switch stock thread floating around, things don't seem to have improved a lot yet, but maybe in 30 minutes we will find out Nintendo has shipped to Japan, and are starting to show the extra production in meaningful ways? Let's hope it's the case at least.

Screams supply constraints. 280k for USA, 220k for Japan I'd predict another 250k for whole of Europe/ROW. That's much less than a million
The ratio is close to that of the first month, so ROW is probably closer to USA than Japan, so slightly over 250k is my guess.

You have to imagine a decent number of Switches that were sold in March would have been sold in April if they didn't basically do an air drop to get them out for March.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
They really underestimated the demand for the console.

But MK8D selling half a million in like 2 days is amazing/impressive.

Then please, be my guest and find one. I sure the hell can't.

Hopefully the stock issues are fixed by the end of this month. The system could have easily sold double that amount in April if they had more units to sell.

Actually this is a very good point. Part of the potential 1m a month shipments were potentially rushed in during March.

Their second month was Christmas, so no point even comparing them

Don't forget MK8 came end of April maybe they strategically kept some produced units for later.

edit: yeah good point also the above...

impossible, can't up the production so soon, at best we can expect 400-600k per month for US which I don't think it will be enough to meet demand 100%.

Also, that MK8D number is pretty bonkers, since it represents nearly a 50% attach rate. Not that we didn't know that yet, but still impressive.

How does the drop compare to XB1 and PS4's second month?

I think PS4 held on with another million or so after it's first month was 2-3 million, but keep in mind that those were released during holiday periods where a large stock was to be expected. Short sighted as it may have been on Nintendo's part, I don't think they or anyone could have expected demand to be as strong as it was on a March-April period.

Honest question; why are Nintendo having issues keeping up with demand? Sony and Microsoft didn't have this problem, or at least not as bad, did they?

Was 3DS sold out everywhere too in its second month? Unless it was this wouldn't really be a fair comparison.

I'm actually just curious about their relative production capacity to be honest. We've been hearing about Japan Display having financial trouble and that may indicate there is some bottleneck in production of Switches which hasn't been fixed as of March-April.

Which would be a big problem if true.

194k. It was fully in stock though (sold only 98k units in May..)

Gotcha, thanks.

I haven't really been following the stock threads or whatever since I already got mines, but my friend says that if he really wanted to get a Switch, he could easily buy one online from like Amazon or whatever and this is easily done if you're twitter game is on point or something.

For people still looking, is this actually true or is he talking out his ass?

To be fair...releasing a new console in March after the colossal failure of the Wii U I would probably plan to ship conservatively as well just in case it didn't catch on immediately.

Wii U literally just had boxes sitting on shelves right after first two launch months so they probably got burned to some extent during that.

Perhaps they'll ship more units to North America now that supply in Europe looks pretty healthy.

They simply didn't produce as many systems as they didn't want to be stuck with too much stock.

He is correct. If you have like a Slickdeals alert set up for Twitter notifications you can snap up a Swtich fairly easily. They don't sell out in like 30 seconds.

But that doesn't mean there aren't stock isssues for all those people who don't do that.

If you have to have an 'on point twitter game' to get a console, it's having stock issues.

Does he mean third-party resellers? Of course. And if you have stock notifications set up via text message you can probably leap on a bundle when it becomes available but you only have a window of a minute or two.

1. Sony and MS are much larger corporations
2. Wii U was a colossal disaster for Nintendo
3. Nintendo is a very conservative company in general

Given how hard it is to find a Switch at retail, one has to wonder what the April numbers would look like if supply wasn't an issue.

March 906k
April 280k (626k decline)

By my math, if this 626k decline trend continues the Switch will sell -346k units in May (scalpers returning them due to no demand, of course)

You can buy it from Amazon from third party sellers (aka scalpers) for a higher price pretty readily, but it's incredibly hard to find at MSRP in the US, especially online.

Honestly? It's because they used planes to fly over more
Stock in March. A large chunk of that shipment would have been here in April instead. They over extended themselves so in many ways, unless they flew more over again, it was predictable stock would be lower. May should be back to
Their normal stock levelss.

Well we know their original shipment target was 2 million for March, and they ended up doing 2.72 million. I doubt they were actually about to increase manufacturing to any significant degree in less than a month so that increase was most likely due to quicker logistics (supplying by air rather than 6 weeks on a boat). Lower shipments in April is the end result as they said they stopped doing the air shipping.

Oh wait, sorry, I mean it's totally due to artificial scarcity. Yep, that's it.

Yeah...but WiiU didnt launch with Zelda and had Mario Kart 2 months in. They really underestimated the impact of their first party offerings this time.

This Holiday season will be crazy.

This has nothing to do with the issue at hand - Sony and ;MS consoles had shortages in the past after launch.

Holidays is going to be a nightmare for Nintendo if they don't solve this supplies issues. More than 1 million out there already, the word of mouth of this thing is insane. Nintendo fix this ASAP.

This is what people keep ignoring.

Anyone expecting Nintendo to put out an abundance of Switches after their last system was a flop are a bit naive.
