Trump Told Russians That Firing ‘Nut Job' Comey Eased Pressure From Investigation

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/19/us/politics/trump-russia-comey.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0

WASHINGTON — President Trump told Russian officials in the Oval Office this month that firing the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, had relieved ”great pressure" on him, according to a document summarizing the meeting.

”I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job," Mr. Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by an American official. ”I faced great pressure because of Russia. That's taken off."

Mr. Trump added, ”I'm not under investigation."

The conversation, during a May 10 meeting — the day after he fired Mr. Comey — reinforces the notion that Mr. Trump dismissed him primarily because of the bureau's investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Russian operatives. Mr. Trump said as much in one televised interview, but the White House has offered changing justifications for the firing.

The White House document that contained Mr. Trump's comments was based on notes taken from inside the Oval Office and has been circulated as the official account of the meeting. One official read quotations to The Times, and a second official confirmed the broad outlines of the discussion.

LOL--Trump called him a "nut job?" He can't help himself.

Franken is the clear candidate to me in 2020 if he runs.

I'm still not sold on Kamala. She hasn't impressed me in any of her interviews since Trump took office.

Same here. This board has talked her up for years but I'm just not seeing a person that can win a presidency at this point.

Booker will get eaten by the left. They already tried a marketing campaign against him early in the year.

Booker would make a much better VP choice. In fact, I wonder if Booker as VP would have helped Hillary get enough to win PA, MI, and WI.

I'd say this is as sure a bet in politics as you can get. Literally nobody wants Trump as the 2020 candidate, including Trump himself. And that's if he makes it that long in the first place.
No president in our lifetime has so clearly hated the job. Kasich is making a smart play. He's more likable to the GOP base than Pence is, too, IMO.

make a thread

love how they timed it with the moment he's taking off
He's going to explode in impotent rage the minute he steps onto solid ground.

Not to mention even if he lost, the precedent was already set by Reagan losing to Ford and bouncing back in 1980.

Of course, Carter being a terrible leader gave him an assist there.

LOL the exact quote is apparently recorded in the White House minutes of the meeting. Amazing.

The law enforcement investigation into possible coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign has identified a current White House official as a significant person of interest, showing that the probe is reaching into the highest levels of government, according to people familiar with the matter.

The senior White House adviser under scrutiny by investigators is someone close to the president, according to these people, who would not further identify the official.

The revelation comes as the investigation also appears to be entering a more overtly active phase, with investigators shifting from work that has remained largely hidden from the public to conducting interviews and using a grand jury to issue subpoenas. The intensity of the probe is expected to accelerate in the coming weeks, the people said.

We've talked a lot about age and charisma or how that previously correlated with Dems winning. But the Last three Dems that won were from Georgia, Arkansas and Illinois. There's no prestige in southern or midwestern politics like there is in New York, California or even Massachusetts or something. You generally have to be better at winning over poor, working class people to win elections there unlike those other states where the big cities can carry you.

It's sort of why if we are talking about women who will run in 2020 I'd put Klobuchar ahead of Harris, Gillibrand and Warren in who I think could win a general election. I think she'd have a better idea of what topics to focus on to win midwestern voters than the others would. Or at least that's just a feeling I have.

The Midwest is really the only part that matters because we cant afford to continue to lose ground there. The sunbelt is not going to have the demos to flip for another decade at the very earliest and we have to focus on winning back Michigan, Penn and Wisconsin above pretty much anything else.

How long until GOP spins this into a story about the time Obama told Putin that he'll have more flexibility after his reelection? I think it was Putin, not sure.

Twitter lol of the day, regarding both Trump telling Russia why he fired Flynn and news that the investigation has reached the inner circle:

JFC, don't bother to return home Donnie. How fucking stupid is this guy?

Does Bobby Three Sticks have jurisdiction on the firing of Comey?

Hahahaha Holy shit, the bombs.

Like, I want Democrats to nail home that Republicans are the party of Trump/Bush/Nixon, aka all motherfucking idiots who were guilty of crimes that could have caused Impeachment, while all the Democrats have done is fucking blowjobs and give People healthcare.

Fuck the GOP
