THUMPER is pretty much a perfect game

Damn I was considering getting this on Switch but this thread is all about VR.... So portability + HD rumble or VR immersion (+ 30% off sale)?

I got it on switch too, and I gotta say, I'm performing way worse on the switch version. The immersion given by the VR mode helps a lot, and the game is just better in VR. If you want a gimped version of the experience in exchange for playing it on the go, then Switch is ok.

Just got it on Switch. I was in need of a new switch game and this appeared out of nowhere.

I love it. It's so atmospheric and has a great difficulty curve. Done three levels so far.

it really just depends on which aspect of the game you want to leverage

I guess I have enough to play on switch. It's nice to play anything anywhere, but if something is really good in VR I wouldn't mind sacrificing portability.

If you do have the option to play this in VR, you should go for it.

Hmm seems like I know what I'm doing tonight. Thanks guys!

Please stop. I'll be getting my Switch this week (once customs lets it through), and I already plan to buy a bunch of games. Don't make me spend more!

I'm totally grabbing this too, right? You should feel guilty.

I really like it. The sense of progression is great, and once you understand how the rythm works it's pure Bliss.

Best implemention of HD Rumble so far.

vR must be insane

Is it just me or is this game more difficult in handheld mode compared to docked mode? When using the Pro Controller I am so much better.

Fantastic game however!

On PS4 is it VR only? Or can you play it regular?

I have a Switch, but I rather get the higher quality ver if its on PS4.
I have both a Switch and PS4 Pro (but no PSVR), but I went with Switch because the game's one known issue is input latency on a variety of TVs, something the Switch solves handily by having its own perfectly tuned display. Also, it's amazing being able to pick this up at my desk (I work at home) and knock out levels between writing stories for work. And the HD Rumble is great.

Still runs at 1080p 60fps in docked mode, too.

Got it on Switch and am loving it. Still holding out hope that there is a 2.0 revision to PSVR before I consider jumping in.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if you could tell a difference between Switch docked Thumper and PS4 Thumper.

Yeah, main games I'd want for VR (of any sort) are REVII and Thumper, but I think I'll let the tech mature a bit first.

Switch tends to be good about resolution and framerate in general. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is 1080p 60fps docked; ARMS is 1080p 60fps docked. I remember Digital Foundry saying a good majority of the games on Switch tend to hit these benchmarks.

The Switch version of Thumper lacks chromatic aberration (something that's also disabled in PSVR), but the Switch version also has a new shader exclusive to it.

It really is. Videos cannot convey how this game beats you down, builds you up, makes you strong. It burns in your chest like an absinthe shot, electrodes firing, hard body shots from your playground bestie. Sometimes your eyes bug-out because there's too much consecutive awesome shit this game expects you to do that you literally, actually can't even. And you're momentarily left with a thousand-yard stare down an endless track festooned with red-hot banks and shards of orange crystal. Then you blow up hard. It's really pretty fucking sweet. One day, I will play it in VR.

Oh, and another tip: You can go back and replay earlier worlds for fun, and you won't lose any progress on the current world. So if you get stuck on one world but still feel like playing, you can go replay an earlier world and you'll still have your current world's progress for when you're ready to try again!

And again: Remember to go into Options -> Audio, and pump up the sound. It's a tad low by default, on Switch at least.

Oh yeah, everyone keeps praising VR for this game.

Whenever I get the chance I'll try it in VR. Probably the only game where I'd be enthusiastic to play in VR lol.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
On PS4 is it VR only? Or can you play it regular?

Yes. It also runs at native 4K/60fps in 2D on Pro.
But if you haven't played it in VR then you haven't played it.
Still glad it's getting more sales.

Thumper is great but saying stuff like this is super eye rolling

What's the best controller setup for this in switch? Separate joy cons?
I haven't tried it with separate Joy-Cons, although that's probably the best way to get the full effect of HD Rumble.

I play with a Pro Controller on the TV. And when I really want to focus, I go into handheld mode.

I don't think I have any latency issues on my TV, but I still find myself doing better in handheld.

Note you can tap R in lieu of the A button if you want to give your thumb a break!

Also note you can use the d-pad for precise lateral shifts when switching rails!

Yeah I personally prefer it with split Joy cons, a pro controller might give you a bit more room to move though when it comes to precisely moving the analog stick.
I'm only on level 3 but don't you just have to go left/right/up/down?

(BTW, I tried but couldn't manage d-buttons with this. Sticks seem best)

Starting in World 4, they're going to throw multiple rails at you that you can switch between (along with nasty centipede enemies that come barreling down the track). You tap left and right to switch rails, and sometimes I find it quicker to use the D-Pad in those instances.

Took that a few days ago on the Switch (handheld mode). Posted it in another thread but this thread needs some screenshot love, too!

I bought this on PS4 but never took the time to play it and man, I'm kicking myself for taking too long to do so.

I'm glad more people are picking it up.

While I haven't played the VR version, I can understand why people who have would think it's the definitive edition. I felt that way about many 3DS games — I played 3DS games with the stereoscopic 3D effect at max, and to me that made those games much more appealing than they would be in 2D.

That being said, as someone who's only played the Switch version, it's fantastic. And I wouldn't want to give up the HD Rumble, either. The sense of physicality at every turn is exhilarating with the Switch's more articulated and animated form of rumble.

yeah with a game so focused on percussion and visceral game feel hd rumble is perfect

do any of the VR controllers have haptic feedback?
