Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers - Reviews

I think HD Remix ran on MT Framework. Could be mistaken.
But, yeah. Pretty bizarre. They ported SF4's engine and a lot of its assets...but just for a bad mini game?
Stuff like Dragons' dogma would probably run super well on Switch too. Wish some journalist would ask them about it at e3 unless there's a ton of Capcom games announced there

They probably could have done a remake of SF2: Turbo using SFIV assets and sold it for $60 for just a bit more effort. That would have been a massive release too.

E3 is gonna be illuminating in either a really good way or a really bad way for Switch.

I'm really interested to see how this sells. I'm sure it will sell decently due to SF2 being very popular, but SFV sales tanked right after release due to lack of content and people giving it bad word of mouth due to being barebones.

I'm wondering if this may end up being a similar case.

I really wish Capcom would have done an HD port of Tatsunoko Vs Capcom or Capcom vs SNK 2 instead.

Capcom Vs SNK 2 would be great because they could just rip the sprites out of another fighting game, say MvC2, and shove them in as a new addition. The original devs did it so why can't the people making an enhanced port?

The basics are this: If you enjoy SF2 and want to play it on Switch then you'll like this game. The only question you have to ask yourself is whether or not that is worth $40 to you. If yes, buy it. If not, wait.

I've enjoyed my time with the game and I'm just waiting for the online to go live because I know that is where I'll spend most of my time. Local multiplayer is fun. It's SF2.

But this game is mostly SST2T, AFAIK neither CE or HF is included in this package. This is not SF2 for me.

There are many things Capcom could have done here on the cheap while still providing enough content to justify the price they wanted to sell at. TvC likely might be expensive though because of the licensing of the Tatsunoko characters. That game running through the emulators looks really nice so a re-release could have easily gotten attention.

I think Capcom has a right to value its most powerful fighting game brand as high as it is. Its one of the best fighting games ever made and now you can play multiplayer anywhere. I think that has a certain value. Now if sales numbers show that nobody is buying it, then it is overpriced but I highly doubt that to be honest. The reviews are too harsh with the price point angle. Nobody should judge if the price
Is too high for me, let me decide.

Being able to play anywhere is a component of the system itself not the software. The pricing needs to make sense compared to other games in the series. HD Remix was released 10 years ago for $15.

So many people ask for CVS3 but I would be happy with just getting a good version of CVS2 on a modern platform... God it was so GOOD. CVS2 might be my favorite fighting game ever made.

On a basic level:
- Speed is pretty much set at ST Turbo1
- Throw and techs are mapped to LP+LK, like in SFIV
- "Old" characters are gone
- Balance changes are in the game, but we do not know details yet

Turbo 1? wow, that is slow

And as far as throws go, does the direction of the throw pick the type? Or do they all just get one throw now?

I don't know, as all the videos I've seen haven't had anybody doing a back throw. It would certainly change characters like Ken, Dhalsim, and Boxer, who benefit off of well timed throw loops.

I bought Garou, KOF98 and KOF2002 for £1.68 each this week. £35 for a bad version of SF2 stuck on Turbo 1 and an online mode probably inundated with an overpowered version of Ken isn't a good value proposition. Another low quality release trying to take advantage of the Switch's threadbare release schedule.

I would just love a version of CVS2 with netplay. They don't have to change anything else. I pretty much fell in love with the game playing the PS2 Classics version on a CRT TV last year. I wish I didn't wait so long to play it.

It's probably still too early for devs that slept on Switch to change anything.
Sucks that even when the system does well devs still won't support it, lol.
Still have no clue what's up with Capcom in particular, though.
Guess we'll see with MH (if it's PS4 only then I think Capcom had no plans to fully support Switch despite being Nintendo's next handheld)
Violent Ken is broken?
He's OP but with less health so probably.

Just so you know, this does not work.

Capcom did the same test game nonsense back on the Wii. If you buy this, all you'll get is more products like this, and not the big awesome Capcom games you want.

So all those awesome Capcom games on the XB1 and PS4 are there because the userbase don't overpay for Capcom games. Gotcha.

Well PS4 and XB1 owners are definitely more price conscious.

Plenty of Switch owners on GAF spending $8 on Neo Geo roms without online play and no option to load the home cart version for more modes, not to mention all those buying lazy cash-ins like Bomberman, USF2 and Disgaea 5 just because they're portable.

I buy amiibos though so I am one to talk!

What makes the two bolded lazy cash-ins? Bomberman is awesome and D5 is the same game as on PS4 with all the DLC.

Can't defend USF2 though. :lol

It's not a completely barebones port. While I'm an Alpha guy or a hyper fighting edition guy, if you like Super Turbo, it's not a bad package. You not only get the HD remix, you get the original version of super turbo, too.

Fuck if this was true I'd jump in at any price. I'd LOVE a Super Turbo port on the go that was decent, but that's not what this is.

Why is that perplexing? It got different updates, and fixed some of the problems HD Remix had. It's not a port of HD Remix, but a new update. All the reviews are pretty happy with the gameplay.

Removing speed options because of reasons is kinda dumb though. I'm not a fan.

Any source to back this up? I mean, historically, the popular narrative has been that Nintendo device owners don't buy third party games, so now it's come to the opposite side of the spectrum in where they buy and overpay for third-party games?

Bomberman pre-patch was a turd and Disgaea 5 is a port of a 2 year old game at 720p. They along with USF2 don't represent Japanese publishers putting their best foot forward, they're token gestures rather than a display of confidence in the system. I really hope that will change. Switch deserves more than table scraps.

How are those (except for USF2) lazy cash-ins?

Well CAPCPOM have/had some of the most aggressive discounts on Nintendo platforms so I hope for an decent eShop discount later in the year.

Seems like that from early impressions. Rasetsu Kyaku is a fast, easily input teleport which also passes through opponents. Seems pretty huge.

This. I posted this a couple of pages back, but there were no responses:

Here is the Violent Ken conundrum:
You are 3/4 screen away from Violent Ken and he throws a LP hadouken. How do you respond?
Neutral jump? Violent Ken does a medium command dash and HP Shoryukens you out of the air.
Jump forward? Violent Ken does a medium command dash and LP Shoryukens you out of the air.
Block? Violent Ken does a medium command dash and tick throws you.
Take the hit? Violent Ken does a medium command dash and walks up to finish a combo.
Jump back? You land on the fireball.

Overpriced ...but I must have it. Yes, I know. Prime Discount at least though. I picked up a Switch and this is the only thing I really want to play on it for when I travel.

Looked around in some places for details, found this video linked at Shoryuken forums.

For anyone that is interested, this French YouTuber does an almost full break-down of USFII, including side by side frame data comparisons with HD Remix, worth the watch even if you don't know French:

Edit: Violent Ken pum-pum mix-ups explored toward the end. V.Ken definitely broken as fuck. Kek

I did pre-order when it first went up on Amazon based on nostalgia and a want of new games to play on my new console. But I cancelled a couple of days ago because I couldn't justify the price to myself for a port genre that I don't play all that often and I own on other platforms.

However, it it had came out around the £15.99 - £17.99 price point that a lot of the larger shop titles do I'd have bought it like a shot. But at double that price, I'll wait for a sale or retail price to drop.

Am I alone in thinking they should've done a Super Street Fighter One? Yeah the original sucked, but that's why they should do an update, so the 1st game can finally live up to the rest of the series.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
A bunch of reviews of the price, rather than the game, is basically what I expected... and you haven't let me down, journalists!

Even if the rights for the music or whatever, and SNK Playmore said OK, Capcom would still find a way to fuck it up.

It'll be the Xbox/GC version, no rollcancels, just rollback.

And they'll somehow stuff Udon trash in it.

Nah. With the level of overhauling it would take to make the first game palattable in this day & age, their resources would be better spent just making a SF VI.

I don't get what you mean, didn't Capcom bring Monster Hunter Tri, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Zack and Wiki and RE4 on Wii?

Three of those are OG releases. (I think MH3 was Wii exclusive, right?)

They did those because the Wii was selling tens of millions of units and nobody had yet realized that wasn't going to translate into sky-high software sales. Had nothing to do with people supporting early Capcom Wii efforts.

You'll see bigger, more fully fledged titles (hopefully priced more sanely than this) when/if the Switch install base hits critical mass.
