Newson is one of Australia’s best known designers, with his resume including working with his best mate Jony Ive to create the Apple Watch.

Now he’s gone back to the basics to make an hourglass. But this is an hourglass with a difference.

It doesn’t have sand. It is terribly difficult to make. And it costs a small fortune.

Newson has teamed up with Hodinkee to make the hourglass, or to give it its proper name: The Marc Newson Hourglass.

Yes, this is an hourglass. You turn it over and it measures out 10 minutes as the particles inside run through the small hole in the center of the glass. But that's where the similarities with hourglasses you know end. It's hard to think of a simple object hiding more complexity than this one.

The Marc Newson Hourglass for HODINKEE stands 150mm tall, and is 125mm across at the widest point. It is made of hand-blown borosilicate glass (which you might also know as Pyrex), which is optically very clear, but also stronger than something like crystal. Inside, the time isn't kept by sand, or another common filler. No, inside are approximately 1,249,996 little spheres called "nanoballs." Each nanoball is just 0.6mm in diameter, and they're made from solid stainless steel with a fine copper coating (and an anti-corrosion layer, so you won't have to worry about them turning green in a few years' time). Look under a loupe and you'll notice they're entirely seamless, so they won't catch on one another or scratch the glass. They move together almost like a liquid, and weigh 1.1kg. All together, the Hourglass weighs in at 1.5kg – that's a little over 3.3 pounds for those of you in the United States.

600 μm is not nano, Marc.

This is a limited edition. There will be 100 in total but Hodinkee says there are only six made so far which have already been sold.

Anyone interested?

Marc Newson is arguably more famous for his work outside Apple than inside. I think the only notable design contribution he's made at Apple is on the Watch.

I mean at least these look kind of stylish unlike those stupid watches.

Still a ridiculous amount to pay for such a trivial thing.

Christ, give it to apple, let them slap the letter i in front of it and they would have idiots lining up around the block to buy one at 30 grand a pop in a week.

The only thing i don't like about this is that there's his signature on the hourglass, for the rest it's a cool piece of design.

Of course, he was a worldwide famous design before entering Apple, i also think it's pretty safe to assume that he really only worked on Apple Watch since he was there he joined pretty recently.

Its always about the audience though. For the average NeoGAF reader has he done anything more recognizable than his work with Apple watch?

So the main advantage is less wear? But I could buy 500 cheap 10-minute sand timers for that price. Is the market for this people that expect to live forever and also really need an accurate 10-minute timer?

It's a design object first and foremost, its market is anyone that likes it and has the money to buy it.

That's a fancy hourglass. Not paying for something that counts out ten minutes though. That's stupid. You go the trivial pursuit amount of time or its an hour. That's it.

I wish I could design useless crap and charge rich people an arm and a leg for it.

I wish I was so rich I'd look for useless crap to spend my bottomless wealth on.

So Apple has 2 'world famous' designers and I'm getting a fingerprint sensor on the back of my iphone 8?

I'm sure he was neck deep in the apple car before they canned it.
