Most disturbing film you've ever seen?

I feel like watching a really fucked up movie tonight and am looking for some recommendations.

my contribution would probably be Irreversible.

others may come to mind if I spent more time really thinking about it, but Irreversible is the one that first pops up in my head as the most disturbing. Film seriously fucked me up after my first viewing of it. I know Martyrs usually immediately comes up in conversations when discussing extreme French cinema but I found Irreversible much more disturbing.

anyways, thanks in advance!

Ginger Snaps fucked me when i was younger. disgustingly graphic movie on its final third.
obviously doesn't compare to actual disturbing movies like the already cited irreversible, but along with my younger age at the time, it still is one of the most disturbing movies i've ever watched.

I never finished Salo because I found it unbearably boring. Maybe I'll give it a second chance...
Salo really doesn't hold up. It's only disturbing insofar as the fact that no one involved was smart or tasteful enough to pull the plug before it ended up in an actual theater.

A SEBRIAN FILM
I own all of these on blu ray except A Seberian film. I found that one quite comical do to how over the top it is. Cannibal holocaust is one of my all-time favorite films. Its a fucking masterpiece.

I Saw the Devil. The violence is intense, but at times borders on the absurd-intentionally I believe- but the opening death, and the closing minutes are really nerve wracking. The movie doesn't hold back when the emotional weight sinks in, which is really the most intense aspect.

Ironically, Cannibal Holocaust is an amazing film but I don't think I can watch it again.

that's how i felt about serbian film - tried so hard, and it was gross as fuck but just boring about it

Ehh, when I found out about the parts with babies and kids, I decided that my sanity was not worth a really shitty film.

Troll was it? Whatever that movie was where the monsters ate the grandpa at the end. Fucked me up as a kid, I wasn't ready.

Ichi the killer

The opening scene is someone watching from the balcony some girl getting beatup. Guy ends up jerking off and the title of the movie is spelled out in the cum... Later a woman get her nipples cut off, another guy hangs from meat hooks.... Turned it off after that.

Movie is hilarious dude

Man you didn't even get the scene where Ichi goes fucking nuts and it is just one long cut of screaming and guts projectile flying out of the room.

The original Martyrs was so genuinely unnerving, and had me wincing at several scenes, even as a huge horror nut. I handled Antichrist just fine, and Salo bored me to tears... but Martyrs, man, *phew*

A little less on the nose: Vulgar (2000). Surprisingly a View Askew flick, and awfully disturbing to come from the Kevin Smith camp, pre-dating both Tusk and Red State. Vulgar was Bryan Johnson's (the basis for Randall from Clerks) directorial debut and centers on being a dark comedy about
clown rape

Rubber's Lover is also extremely messed up, in the vein of Tetsuo The Iron Man, and hard to watch because it's crazy low budget and kind of like Tetsuo in that it's a sensory assault. Wouldn't recommend tbh, but it fits the request.

Another, better recommendation is Noroi: The Curse

I know I mentioned Martyrs in the OP but since someone else mentioned it, I was wondering if anyone has seen the recent remake yet? wondering if it is worth watching

I own Rubber's Lover on DVD, and I'll be honest I couldn't really tell you the plot of the flick for the life of me. When I think of Rubber's Lover though, I definitely think industrial and grimey. I'm due for a re-watch. Pinocchio 964 by the same director is a muuuuuch better film by a mile imho however.

Anyone mention Begotten yet? It always fits the bill nicely in discussions such as this.

(the remake from 2003 just to clarify)

I was visibly shaking after it was over

Guys getting their legs chainsawed off, then hung on meat hooks through their back while the bloody stump of the leg is shoved into a bag of salt. all while still alive

And that's just one part

It's put me off a lot of horror ever since

Haven't seen the movie but I'm betting the manga is even more fucked up.

Cannibal Holocaust made me incredibly angry for attempting social commentary despite the makers of the film being hypocrites for forcing their actors to do really fucked up shit for the sake of shock value, and then hilariously stating their "message" out loud at the end of the film.

I had totally forgotten about that one. Found it on YouTube and watched it a year or so ago and it's just... weird. It didn't really upset me the way other films have but it certainly made me uncomfortable.

Threads. That movie had me fucked up for a good while

I know the two have been compared, but I remember watching "The War Game" in a high school history class. That was definitely a difficult watch for a much different reason than what most people are going for.

Unless the actors had no idea what they were getting themselves in for, you can't really say they were "forced"

I know it doesn't help your quest for recommendations, but my pick is probably Martyrs. It's hardly the grossest film out there, but what really gives it that kick is its approach. The violence isn't a side effect of something else, violence at its most basic level is fundamentally what the movie is about. Violence itself is the justification. Great film, though I'm not sure if I'll ever watch it again.

(I doubt it would have the same impact on my jaded self today, but seeing Tetsuo 2 in a theater when I was a teenager was pretty shocking. Fun memories.)
