Most Unpleasant Time at a Restaurant

For me it was 5 months ago and was at a pizza restaurant in Nashville. The food was really good don't get me wrong but people's kids were out of control which eventually led to someone dropping a pizza pan on their leg. I never seen such a horrific sight then to see someone burn and scream in pain. Made me so sad to watch but luckily he got to the hospital. What about you Gaf? What are your most unpleasant experiences at a restaurant?

Went to IHOP at like 2 am. I fully expected the food and service to be shit, which I was ok with. My mom and my sister's boyfriend apparently didn't know what they were getting into and made the whole time unpleasant.

Went into a restaurant in an otherwise lovely central American town. It was late afternoon, totally empty, just me and my girlfriend - we had just arrived in town.

Before ordering, I went to the bathroom to take care of business. It's occupied, no stress. Hey look, the sink (outside the bathroom) is broken off the wall, and there's a bucket hanging from a spigot to wash your hands in. Gross, but whatever.

The guy in the stall is having a super loud, explosive, dripping wet shit.

... I wait.

He finishes up, comes out, looks at the bucket, walks straight past it into the kitchen where he resumes cooking.

I didn't even look in the stall. I literally went back to the table, told the gf "we're not eating here" and left.

No tip.

I've been fortunate enough to not have an absolute terrible time. The worst it's ever been was a Korean BBQ restaurant.

The food was great but the service was cold and they really REALLY made sure we tipped.

Wasn't really unpleasant but I once went to go eat Chinese food with my gf and the "couple" sitting in the both behind me were cheating on their significant others. Found out because they mentioned their so's a couple of times and called them names. The lady had 3 children, or she only mentioned 3 of em at least. It was weird sitting close to them and listening to their shitty convo.

We found half a cockroach in the salsa. Still twitching. Still don't know to this day if one of us ate the other half.

Birthday dinner at a Ponderosa Steakhouse back before I knew what steak was. We hit the buffet once, and then waited for our steaks. And we waited. And we waited. And we waited. By the time we got our steaks, they had sat for so long that the grease had congealed on top.

The annoying part? You had to pre-tip there. While the manager could refund us the cost of our meals, he couldn't refund the tip. The waitress got paid despite being the issue.

I have a few minor ones (served overcooked steak that was cut horribly with silver skin still on it, and another time where a restaurant tried to pass off a ribeye as a ny strip), but the worst was someone at our table getting served a piece of rotten beef that actually smelled. The restaurant apologized and offered to cook the person something different, but at that point, everyone lost their appetite.

I've never had bad episodes involving service (minus the waiter trying to pass off a wrong cut of meat to me). But, I also don't eat out much nor at chain restaurants, so that may be a factor.

If being at O' Charley's wasn't bad enough, we were stuck with a waiter who reeked of body odor. They sat us next to the register / kiosk, so we had to constantly be around him.

Stopped off at a Carl's Jr during a lunch break. Had no idea it was their last day before it closed and eventually torn down. I'll keep it short, the food was no bueno. Got sick almost instantly.

I saw Chris Pratt at a high end restaurant in Los Angeles other day. I really wanted to say hi to him but he seemed pretty engaged with his family and I didn't want to be an asshole. I decided that I would just say something quick to him while I was leaving, but then he finished first. I didn't want to miss him so I just ran up and told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I guessed this happens often and he was fed up with it so I just left, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came time for him to pay the bill I saw him stuff a bunch of breadsticks in his pockets. He was telling his wife to put some in her shirt too.
The waitress was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you can't leave with the breadsticks. You're free to eat them as long as you stay. Its Olive Garden policy.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually he took them out and started snacking on them.
When she took his credit card and started swiping it, he stopped her and told her to swipe it multiple times “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she swiped the card and tried to take the bill, he kept interrupting her by snatching it out of her hands and making sure she wasn't trying to tack on additional charges.

I was eating alone in a restaurant once and this one guy who was with a couple of friends kept glaring at me and shushing his friends like I was eavesdropping or something.

I once waited like 2 hours (came out just as I was about to leave) for a chicken schnitzel that was so over cooked I couldn't cut it with a steak knife. I left it on the plate, informed the waitress went to leave and the fool taking orders near the front actually had the gall to ask me to pay.

That one time when my dad's relationship with his partner was falling apart so he took it out on me and called me a whole list of names and blamed his issues on me. Things are very different between us now.

This is op worthy

Mine is minor compared to some here, but went to a Denny's with my family for breakfast once, ordered and then just started talking about stuff, at one point we realized we'd been sitting there for an hour and still hadn't gotten our food, so we just got up and left.

Had a coupon for a place called Pizza Barn. I've seen actual barns in better condition. Floor was filthy and the ceiling had major water damage with tiles falling off in spots. Place was also part bar, part pool hall - except none of the pool tables worked and were torn/dirty. Behind the bar was a tv BLARING episodes of Johnny Test with the bass set to the highest it could go. The atmosphere was a bit surreal.

Menu had a bunch of items, but considering the place is called Pizza Barn, I decided to get a pizza. Came out and was literally store bought frozen pizza put in the oven. I am a longtime connoisseur of frozen pizzas and this happened to be a Totino's pizza. It's the personal pizza you can basically buy for $1.50 or less, and they are charging $8 on the menu for it.

Before we ordered I showed our waitress the coupon so I could clarify something about it. It wasn't till we had eaten that they told us the place was 'under new management' and that somehow in their minds nullifies the coupon. Only place I've ever walked out without paying I was so disgusted at that point. Also have to mention we had to drive 40 min. to get to this place. Hopefully they are out of business by now.

Edit: This brought up such a horrible memory for me that I had to research it. Looks like Pizza Barn closed down in 2011.
A new pizza shoppe opened up in its ashes called Papa D's that looks decent judging by the facebook pics. I would maybe give that place a shot if it were closer. Especially since it looks like they make their own pizza and don't try to pass off frozen store bought crud for 7x the price.

Oh also I've been to dinners with friends where they're obsessing over the price of stuff and complaining about like every aspect of the establishment because of the price (expecting too much). Way to ruin a potentially good meal I guess.

Last year my fiancée and I were walking around in a fairly touristy area in Hong Kong looking for a good authentic Chinese place to eat, and after being unable to find one place in particular, we were tired of looking and settled on a place that at the very least had decent-looking pictures of their food. Man, it was garbage. Zero flavor, slow service, overcooked meat, rude staff, and our table was right next to where people were going in and out of the kitchen/bathroom area. It was such a waste of a meal while in a great food city, and even the food cart out front had much better looking stuff.

I was doing my insulin injection discreetly beneath the table when I was approached by a waiter and manager, and told to either go inject in the bathroom or leave the property altogether, as I was making other patrons uncomfortable. I argued my case, got the management teams details, told the woman who complained where to put her opinion, and walked out without paying for my meal. I'm so sorry that my life-saving injection bothers you so much. Cunts.

Berlin, Germany.

We got recommended this traditional Bavarian restaurant by a tour guide and we decided to check it out. Food was incredible and we thoroughly enjoyed it but gathered that it was probably a tourist joint since it was near a major shopping street but still, food wasn't super expensive.

So anyway, everything was tasty and it came up to the bill. We discovered that we had the exact money in bills and coins to how much the final total came to. Our waiter arrives and takes the restaurant's wallet with the money and receipt, opens it up and then literally spends a good minute counting it. Just standing there in front of us counting and inspecting the receipt in front of us. After a while I asked "Is something wrong? Is something missing?" as a genuine concern given that we were dealing with foreign currency. Also, we were still planted in our seats so it wasn't like we were going to short change and dash. We weren't in any rush. He inspects the bill one last time before he keeps the money but takes out the receipt, puts on the table and says "YOU DIDN'T TIP!" and then walks away. Traditionally, my GF and I always tip after we complete the payment whether its leaving the spare change on the table or leaving something before we get up and leave but at that moment we were both so offended. Like fuck did we leave that rude bastard a tip. Pretty hilarious looking now but at the time we found it pretty unpleasant. We even wondered if it was a German thing to pay a tip alongside the final bill but still, given there were Americans and other nationalities around us then he would've understood given his experience.

Well done. Hate it when people get all uppy about treatment you actually need.

Went to a newly-opened restaurant with a group of friends for someone's birthday. Interior and initial service was lovely, we ordered our food and mostly non-alcoholic drinks as a bunch of us weren't alcohol-drinkers.

We got into the restaurant at about 7pm. The food finally arrived at 9.40pm, with the wait in-between constantly peppered with the waiter asking us if we wanted to order any alcoholic drinks every thirty minutes.

The food itself was undercooked for a lot of people, with my flatmate's chicken still being bright pink on the inside.

To me, it seemed that they'd seen a group of people come in and expected to be able to up the bill with alcohol purchases, and when it dawned on them that we were really *not* buying any, they put the food on as quick as possible to avoid it being dragged out any longer and ended up not cooking it through properly.

Needless to say, we never went back again.

Have walked into restaurants, waited 45 minutes for service and then left.

Alternatively, getting billed for the table next to ours when those assholes just left without paying. The waitress simply thought: "I'll add their bill to that other table, they won't mind." Even though I was going to pay for my entire table, I did not intend to pay for theirs. One of my friends ended up going insane at the waitress who then pretended to be all crying and remorseful. Took us 30m to re-separate the bill, punch the floor manager in the face and leave a 0.001% tip. I expect that waitress got sacked after we left. Never went back to that place ever again, warned other people to do the same.

And, my favorite: walking into an "American-style" diner, waiting to be seated, getting a super rude waitress asking whether we wanted to eat or just have drinks, us saying that eat and have drinks, the waitress then going "so you're a bunch of drunks then?". We left immediately, never to return.

Sounds like the title of a sitcom about a family-friendly restaurant :)

In college I went to a Mexican restaurant in a very yuppy-type village in upstate New York. My friends and I -- there were about 6 of us, 2 guys and 4 women -- got a table and ordered appetizers and some drinks. Before we were able to order entrees, like 10 minutes after sitting down, the manager came to our table and informed us that it was almost dinner rush and he needed us to leave so he could seat more patrons. He didn't ask any other tables to leave.

We were like, "Uh, are we not eating dinner here?" He didn't give us an explanation, just asked us to pay for our drinks and leave. My guess is that we were younger than his desired clientele. We weren't loud or poorly dressed or anything. Food was terrible anyway.

I was at a TGI Friday with my girlfriend at the time, she ordered a burger with sticky barbecue sauce. The waiter then tripped as he came towards the table and hurled the pot of barbecue sauce all over my girlfriend and her clothes and bag.

She was upset and the waiter was mortified. The meal was free and they also paid for her dry cleaning!
