Spring Anime 2017 |OT| Don't be a SukaSuka for Gacha

While I'll be watching a bunch of shows initially for preview purposes, my actual short list of stuff I'm really excited for summer is still surprisingly large considering how barren this season appeared at first glance.

  • Castlevania: Shhh, I know it's not actually anime, but I can't help one of my favorite game franchises getting an adaptation that looks this cool! Here's hoping it actually turns out as well that recent teaser made it appear.
  • Fate/Apocrypha: My thoughts on A-1 Pictures aside, I've wanted an adaptation of this particular Fate story ever since first watching Fate/Zero a couple years back, so here's hoping this lives up to the constant praise I've seen for the original light novel.
  • Kakegurui: Seeming like a spiritual successor to No Game No Life, Kakegurui stars a female protagonist battling her way to wealth and power in her school via her incredible gambling skills. Top this all off with MAPPA at the helm, and I don't see how I couldn't be excited!
  • Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu: Ufotable have been hit and miss outside of their work with Type-Moon, but if nothing else, this will certainly be one of the prettiest shows all year, and I'm all for beautiful, shirtless samurai action!
  • New Game!! (Season 2): I actually enjoyed the first season of New Game! much more than I expected to, so another season is perfectly fine with me, even if it ends up being simply more of the same.
  • Owarimonogatari (Season 2): It's more Monogatari, need I say more?
  • Princess Principal: I know I have the relatively unpopular opinion of being a fan of Studio 3Hz's work (yes, even after Flip Flappers), so the idea of them doing a show about steampunk-Victorian schoolgirls moonlighting as spies has me intrigued.
  • Welcome to the Ballroom: I typically don't like sports anime, but I am looking forward to this show mostly because my father was a professional ballroom dancer for many years, so I'm curious to see how the show compares to the many stories of the sport he's told me over the years.

Hmmmm, what's this summer anime called Tenshi no 3P!?

What's the story regarding this one? Let's see here...

Kyou Nukui is a first year high school student hikikomori. His hobby is making Vocaloid songs and uploading them online. One day, he receives a message from a fan asking if they could meet up with him. At the meeting place, three elementary school girls were waiting for him. The three of them want to form a band and ask for Kyou's help.

Well that sounds innocent enough!

Oh, this is a light novel adaptation? Oh dear...well it could still be a pleasant surprise-wait. Who wrote the source material?

Oh. The same guy who wrote Ro-Kyu-Bu.

Oh no.

Oooooooh noooooooo.

I dont think they would make a mistake of waiting too long for a Shingeki 3 though.
I'm sure they won't but it's going to be 2019 at the earliest. With Magnus and Kabaneri
My Hero Academia: 19-20

These have been good invigorating episodes, ready to catch up now but one more episode to go.
You should at least continue the anime until it end before switching. You are going to miss some sweet sweet animation by going to the manga right now.

Also I think the anime is currently better then the manga. It's like the manga+ in every way.

This was a surprisingly bittersweet episode. MC's harem is down to a love triangle at this point and he only wants the third girl, which is now MIA because of his foolish pride before the game release. Well, and pandering Eriri..... So, episode 0, actually took place at the end of S2 then? Where does that fit in on the timeline now?

Summer shows that are must watches

Hitorijime My Hero
Dive!!
703X
Konbini Kareshi
18if

Saiyuki Reload BLast
Altair
Chronos Ruler
Ufotable Touken Ranbu

Sort of glad the Sony President pretty much confirms more of the Fate/Grand Order anime. Can't leave off hanging on that 70 minute special when the setup hasn't even begun.

Lol Mei getting that one goal accomplished and Tokoyami with the quick work. Well all caught up now, still a ways off from the moment I've been looking forward to but it's getting there.

Hmm maybe AoT S2 next.

Ah it's fine, first started the manga a little while before the first season and kinda stopped near the end of an arc, like 20 something chapters behind or something like that. And yeah it's always nice to see an adaptation turn out this well.

More Monster Strike anime, now with idols PV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIfxbOSejiQ

The smartphone game Monster Strike is inspiring a five-episode original anime special titled Mon-Soni! D'Artagnan no Idol Sengen (Monster Sonic! D'Artagnan's Idol Declaration) this summer. The new anime will begin streaming on the YouTube service at 7:00 p.m. (6:00 a.m. EDT) on June 14.

Luc[y]fer singing has inspired more characters. I cant wait.

This has to be the slowest moving anime thread ever. Is everyone hiding on the Discord chat, or is it just that nobody is watching as much anine?

Where is everyone?

I dunno, seems like a pretty typical pace from after the post-cajun post-Jexhius era.

I actually haven't watched a single anime from this season for what it's worth.
Kemono Friends made all future anime obsolete obviously!

Between work and trying to keep up with this season's shows and binge watching older shows, I hardly have time to surf, much less chat. Hell, I haven't touched Persona in over three weeks I've been so busy! That and, well... I don't often feel I have much to contribute due to my relative inexperience with the medium compared to most people here.

The bigger and most watched show air during the weekend. Most common posters here aren't into action shonen too and they are the biggest part of this season. I'm sure they are other factors.

Like many people were in their finals in the last few weeks.

The specific shows OT of this season are pretty lively tho.

Aaaaahhh I see. Yea, the MHA anime has just been delievering and god is it amazing.

yeah none of the shows airing so far really warrant much discussion. I love discussing Kado, but there aren't many here discussing it. And the two other shows I' watching are trashy so I don't really post much about it.

Anyone here watching The Laughing Salesman? I gave it two episodes and I think I'm done.

I really like "deal with the devil" type shows. But so far this one seems so contrived. Rather than having justified stipulations, virtues, or lessons, it basically devolved into a dude fucking with people just to fuck with them. The way he smugly laughs at the end when he delivers the "you got what you 'desrved'" line made me feel like the only person that deserves any comeuppance here is the Salesman himself.

The big factor now that I think about it is probably that every show that are being watched are actually good and nobody is shitting on anything and we all know that positivity doesn't bring lots of conversion, but god damn if negativity does.

Also I'll add that if a show is considered bad or boring, the consensus usually agree so that also doesn't bring conversation.

There's not much going on for Thursdays, Kiritobread. That and people are busy with other things.

Not many people have as much free time to watch on their phone in their two jobs, y'know?!

That's kind of the point. I understand the difficulty people have with figuring this show out, since stories using the "deal with the devil" narrative framework you identify usually place the primary blame for things going wrong on the person who made the deal. But this isn't a show that's interested in purposeful moral lessons. It's better to view this as horror with a layer of cynical societal critique. Moguro represents Japanese working society at its worst (see the intro to each episode where he's overlaid with live-action footage of Japanese cities). He is a malicious figure who seeks to ruin the lives of his victims and has no pity for their struggles, just as society is portrayed as a brutal, uncaring force which crushes the spirits of the individuals featured.

The fundamental message of The Laughing Salesman isn't "You can live a satisfying life if you avoid mistakes," but "The whole world hates you and wants to see you fail." It's a nihilistic perspective that doesn't make for pleasant viewing.

Yeah It's definitely a downer. I was intrigued by its art-style but I think it's just not for me.

The 3rd made me fall behind on half the shows I'm watching. Also I generally tend to post less impressions as the season goes on, and I'm not really watching any shows that warrant much disscussion anyway. We need a good mystery again, like Rokka. That was fun.

Where is everyone?

Perhaps because no show this season has inspired anything to talk about.

I'm only watching two shows this season, one of which is a big disappointment.

Some of us have work and lives, Cornbread! :p

Not much to watch during the weekdays. Today I am doing crunch on a build, so I don't have time to post thoughts on my rewatch of Beyond the Boundary. Maybe another day when I got more time.

Man i have looking at some Bleach fight and man it's crazy that even fillers just had some absolutely amazing fights.

That Yamamoto vs the Regais....so good.

Tsukigakirei Episode 7

Wait I wanted Nagahara and Setsuko to stay together, best moments

Short episodes continue to be more interesting than the main story.

I was hoping the main pairing in episode would get mixed with the other interests, I dont want sadness.

What does a BGBW actually watch?

All I've watched this season is My Hero Academia and Cinderella Girls Theatre.

I thought Cinderella Girls Theatre would be to Cindy Gals as Puchimas was to OG iM@S, but it really isn't. The Producer is a complete non entity rather than the butt of jokes Puchi P is, and to make matter worse, some "skits" are completely absent of jokes - literally just a scene to say "it's this idol!". That is all well and good except that's what the "serious" series was for. Here I was expecting them to take these one note characters and have fun with them. Such a waste of potential. Basically just looking out for Miku episodes now since she's the only saving grace.
