So...I'm getting ready to hop back into this game after not playing for probably a year and a half. I have hardly any recollection on how to play my Ninja or Astrologian. Anything out there to help and/or show what has changed in that timespan? I figured I'd just check out some class tutorials on Youtube to get reacquainted. I have pretty much all of the Heavensward content to complete unfortunately.

I wouldn't worry too much about that because the expansion is hitting in 3 weeks and it'll heavily change jobs.

Given the zero tuning changes we know about healers in general trying to guess what's changed or not in meta seems super premature.

And it's not like WHM in Creator was in the AST during Gordias spot--nobody disputed that WHM could heal every fight, it's just that nothing in the tier warranted that much raw healing so WHM was most healing overkill. Sort of the opposite of what you'd look for wanting to play the challenge mode healer.

Hm, I may have been wrong to write off astrologian. I've only leveled it up twice, but it already seems like a lot less to keep track of than scholar, which makes it more fun to actively heal.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Scholars don't even heal, they /songbird while Eos heals.

They will ease you into the ast stuff better with how they give you new abilities. At the end of it all, AST has more management than SCH

I think Healers will be putting out more DPS than before since the transition from healing to damage will be seamless. Even when people are taking damage you can weave damage abilities inbetween your healing as the situation demands then just do damage as the need for healing tapers off.

EDIT: Another thing I noticed is that in the Job Action video the Monk was somehow gaining Chakra without using Meditation even before using the Spirit Bombish looking party buff that gives you Chakra from party member weaponskills.

Yeah, healing and dpsing now will be much easier. It's really going to change things with healers using crit materia and dpsing nearly exclusively.

It will be easier... er, risk free, it's not really hard now, but it won't make Sylphies start doing damage.

Hot take: DPSing is crap.

I miss the days when MMORPGs would keep healers so busy with healing and buffing that they didn't have time to even think about DPSing.

I don't think good healers (those that DPS now) won't be able to cope with it but it will put a lot of pressure on bad healers (those that don't DPS now) and the skill situation won't change on bit.

HOPEFULLY THOUGH with all the new mitigation tools available to everyone they'll rethink their approach to how damage works but I don't expect much given how they're not looking to make the game harder and the playerbase definitely won't take the added obligations well.

We could definitely benefit from some freshness to the fight design. Would be great to have fights with incoming damage that needs attentive healing, and strong defensive utility and mitigation. I would love to stay in my tank stance more often.

There has always been pressure on healers to DPS. People have been yelling at healers who don't DPS for ages. Removing Cleric just makes it easier for them to do it.

I DPS now but I hate every second of it. Don't get me wrong, every second I'm not healing, I'm DPSing. It's not hard, it's just not fun. I've never enjoyed it. I play healers because I don't like DPSing. But there's also no reason to just stand there doing nothing because the incoming damage is not enough to keep me constantly healing... which seems to be incredibly common in this game.

There was a time when MMORPG encounters were actually fully engaging of a healer class's entire skillset. Some of my fondest memories of FF11 are being in the zone as white mage, managing cures, haste rotation, regen rotation, bar spell rotation, erases, etc. In any given battle, I would be so focused and I was always casting something. I have similar memories from EQ and DAoC. FF14? Solo healing content designed for two healers is practically the only time I've felt anything remotely similar.

Oh well.

Well if you want to be healing nonstop there is A12s :D

In all honesty outside of savage stuff healing is pretty lax overall. A byproduct of them wanting the game to be more accessible

The healer DPS focus in raids is generally just to make up for DPS jobs' damage outputs being sub-par anyway (or for Sarc to let me die while he focuses on max deeps), so I'd be fine if they purposely made those fights more healing-intensive to help refocus on putting the main DPS pressure on the actual DPS jobs.

They can keep throwing rocks and whatever other things they do in the dungeon places though, making those go faster is always good for everyone!

Burst damage, yeah, which is why there's downtime.
The problem with this game's damage patterns is that almost always it's wow-it's-nothing followed by a spike either on the raid or on the tank. It ain't WoW bosses that always give healers some kind of mechanic to heal through (special shoutouts to Chronomatic Anomaly). I don't even remember the last time XIV had actual healer mechanics (the best we've got was "heal to full" in that one Wanderer's Palace boss).

Combine with ridiculous strength healers have in this game (for instance how Deployment lets you potentially trivialize entire mechanics on a fairly short cooldown) and the only real problem ends up being MP management, which isn't even that much of a problem in this game (whereas in WoW healing the wrong way will net you a risk of going OOM just by healing, very fast).

Back in the day T13 felt really healing-intensive for me but I imagine if I had the experience I do now back then, I'd find a way to DPS there too. And that fight was like the best raidboss they've ever done in this sense.

Short of getting a third difficulty, I don't see a path to raid content that doesn't just boil everyone down to a DPS. Healers are basically DPS with healing spells, Tanks are DPS with defensive CDs, etc. Even if they nerf the hell out of tank and healer DPS in SB, the choices are still either 'use spare GCDs to do nothing' or 'use spare GCDs to do pitiable damage.'The entire game and combat system is built around these super binary spike damage pass/fails--Did you use a CD before the tank buster? Did you tank swap? etc. You either pass and live or fail and die or they tune everything so low that you just power through it, and even in that case it amounts to one or two extra heal casts and then business as usual.

It doesn't help that probably the most healing-intensive mechanic XIV ever saw was Nisi, which basically nobody bothered with doing. Elysium had an Excel spreadsheet breaking the back half of A4S into GCD by GCD sequencing of what had to happen when, when was safe to pass, when a Nisi tick was likely to coincide with Mortal Rev, whatever. It didn't necessarily dominate literally every single GCD for healers, but it has to be the most insane thing the game ever did. Only they stuck it in the back half of an overall bad fight, combined it with some crazy HP check requirements, and then put Living Liquid in between everyone and even starting the fight. And then Lucrezia intro'd sac strat and everyone just cheesed. Which is a pity, because there are aspects of Nisi that could have been kind of cool if the implementation hadn't been hot garbage in the Manipulator dumpster fire.

So I doubt we'd see something as healing-intensive as that again; more likely we'll just keep getting stuff like the Void Puddle/Holy Bleed/Communion/Incinerating Heat fiesta at the end of A12S, or Photon during Pyretic into Whirlwind in A11s. Short bursts of focused healing, but they make up the minority of the fight so that they can just be tackled as isolated incidents in a sea of fuck-all to do.

The healer DPS focus in raids is generally just to make up for DPS jobs' damage outputs being sub-par anyway (or for Sarc to let me die while he focus on max deeps), so I'd be fine if they purposely made those fights more healing-intensive to help refocus on putting the main DPS pressure on the actual DPS jobs.

We're coming off of Creator which was pretty straightforward tuned for subpar DPS with 0 damage healers, so I dunno how true that is.

Yeah, I liked how healing-intensive the boss encounters were in WoW/FF11. Still glad they changed cleric stance though, so at least it's easier to dps. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So I've gotten to 207 or so item level and am now kind of getting bored and am aimlessly trying to find something to do.

I've been doing a few matches of PVP for the last couple days to get some wolf marks and I'm basically just doing dungeons. Just kind of weird that everyone is in a city. The zones are practically void of players.

I'm so alone Q_Q

I wish I had known about Ultros ahead of time. The FC I'm currently in pretty much just invites the new randos like me and is dead.

Is transferring an option?

With the Cleric Stance change and MND scaling I imagine this won't be the expac where healers get overhauled, if ever. It'll be a 5.0 thing, or 4.5 at the earliest.

Eh I don't want to risk it if I stop playing because of lack of interest.

It really blows my mind companies charge for realm changes. I get that they don't want people switching but why not get one free with how much they make in the sub fee.
I'm kinda just coasting along trying to dabble a little in raid content until SB releases so I won't be totally helpless by then, and if I get into it I'll likely transfer.

I was wondering if anyone here can answer something about buying the game for the first time...

My gf has been on a Trial account for a while and has reached level 34, so she wants to upgrade to a Full account. We bought Final Fantasy XIV Online [PC Download] on the website as it describes itself as "For newcomers to FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, this bundle is the most complete edition and includes both the award-winning FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn and FINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward.".

I'm assuming I have to enter the "Game Activation Code" that gets emailed to you on my gf's MogStation page to upgrade to the full game? Problem is we haven't received a confirmation email yet... is it just a case of waiting a few hours for the email to come through or am I doing it wrong?

I'm not sure if the store's back end works differently in different regions, but based on the NA store, I'd suggest logging in and looking at your order list. It should give you the status and, at least for me, digital games in the 'Validated' state have a line that says "Unlock Code". Clicking that should open a new screen that gives you the key that you can then enter on MogStation. If the state isn't Validated it might let you know if they're still waiting for payment to process, or what.

If the EU store doesn't work like the NA one, I've got nothing.

I'd just keep in mind that not having the right people to play with can really kill the game IMO. Couldn't say if GAF is what you're looking for since it's mostly a catch-all FC that doesn't have any particular focus.

It's better than random FCs that invite every single sprout on the server at least.

The thing about this game is that it's most fun doing raids when it's new, at least imo
Doing raids in the catch up patch is usually too late, the content has become too easy generally speaking
You can just leave the fc if you're not enjoying it, fc leaving is very common anyway

HW Frontlines are more PVE than they are PVP so... yeah.
The very first FL map they did was honestly very fun.
Can't spell slaughter without laughter.
However the biggest problems in it were stunlocking into LBs so if that's gone it might be okay.
Also they did a smart thing and removed levels from PVP which was absolutely necessary for the longevity of the mode (they should've uptuned Carteneau to 60 the moment HW launched, I don't know why they kept it 50).

Yeah I definitely plan on leaving the FC pretty soon.

Things will be a lot more interesting when SB hits, I'm just hoping I'm still in the mood to play this once it drops. Sam and Red Mage both have me very interested at the very least.

EDIT: Yeah Frontlines is a total joke. Way, way too many people to even think about what is going on. I'd much rather PVP have a focus more on 2-4 man groups. Looks like there is a mode for that but the rewards in the DF look... bad.

PvP in WoW isn't great but at least I love Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin.

Seraphis Cain

bad gameplay lol
Speaking of leaving FCs, over 25% of the FC I'm in left today. And like, we weren't a big FC by any means (~45 people), but I liked a lot of these people that left, they're good people, and had been in the FC for a good while. But having so many of them leave all at the same time, with most not even saying goodbye or anything, feels really shitty. =/

Been a bad day for my FC, for sure. I can't imagine how the leader feels. :(

I don't have problem with the PvE aspect of it, but rather what a clusterfuck the PvP part of it is.

You can't make sense of it most of the time, and the general feel of it is totally wrong.

How long is Heavensward and the patch Msqs. I was curious if it was realistic to catch up for Stormblood at this point.

If you're starting at HW you'll have time no problem.

If you're starting from scratch you still could, but you'd be having to play a lot!

I'm about to start Heavensward so it's good to know it's possible.

Oh yeah you'll be fine then man. I just started it like a week ago and I only have about 20 quests left. Just focusing on getting some ILevels and unlocking a lot of dungeons I missed.

Hey GAF, thinking of dipping my toe back in after a long hiatus (dropped out just before the 2.1 patch) so I don't know if I even have a shot at getting through all the story and progression stuffs by Stormblood launch, but I'm fine taking it slow through Heavensward anyway.

Just a couple quick questions: GAF is still on Ultros, right? And the OP's instructions are still valid for requesting a rejoin to the Free Company?

Yes to both, but bear in mind as the US servers were moved, if you are in EU you have higher ping to Ultros now, and the FC has a new, fashion tyrant, leader.

Had a look, couldn't see anything that say's "Unlock Code". Although the money has left my account as I hadn't redeemed the activation code it's let me cancel the order so we'll see what happens. I'll probably pick it up from somewhere else this time, though. Thanks for the reply.

Fashion tyrant??

I'm in Japan so hopefully the server lag won't be too bad (managed WoW and ESO fine, though for the Ifrit fight way back when I ended up needing Pingzapper for FFXIV...we'll see if it's improved). EDIT: Looks like the data center was moved to Sacramento, California? If so that should actually help me quite a bit. :)

Thank you kindly for the info, hope to see y'all in game soon!

Also is Golden Saucer fun? I've been there but never actually did any of the games.
