What a shame this show was cancelled in the middle of season 2 due to its astronomical production costs. Got the blu-ray set as a Christmas gift last year and only just got around to finishing. In a word, brilliant. I can't believe it took me this long to watch it. Its not hard to see why the first season cost $110M to make, the sets look so realistic and the amount of detail is just insane. The first season was close to perfection for me, and the only season that wasn't affected by the decision to cut the series short. The cast consists mainly of British actors so most of them were foreign to me, but I did recognise Kevin McKidd from his small role in Kingdom of Heaven. Ciaran Hinds' portayal of Caesar was probably the highlight for me in terms of individual performances along with James Purefoy as Marc Anthony. I'm surprised Ray Stevenson hasn't landed many significant roles since Rome. I thought he was fantastic as Titus Pullo and very likable. Its refreshing they didn't seem to cast the females based on looks. There isn't a token beauty in the show, just a cast of very capable actresses who were perfect for their roles. Polly Walker is just ghastly as Atia and you wouldn't have it any other way.

Going into the it I thought this would have a lot of action scenes - not so. 90% of the show is dialog driven and all the better for it. The show revolves around politics, friendship and the relationship between master and their slave. The script holds up well, I never cringed or felt it was cheesy and the cast do a good job in delivery. My favourite story arc has to that of Marc Anthony's. At the beginning I almost despise him for his arrogance, but by the end I felt sorry when I realised just how tragic the character was. James Purefoy's performance is so full of energy and vigor its a joy to watch. The story is actually driven by the lives of two soldiers, Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson). I actually found their own storylines the most entertaining and was impressed by how well they were intertwined into the main events. Season 2's pacing was seriously hampered by the decision to cut the show short. Apparently they had originally planned Rome to be 5 seasons, so they pretty much had to cram 3 seasons worth into the second half of season 2. As you can imagine this leads to sudden massive jumps in time which has you scratching your head at times, especially if you weren't aware of the circumstances. Having said that I believe they did an admirable job to wrap up the show so quickly.

For anyone that hasn't seen it be warned, Rome is pretty vulgar (over the top at times for me) and violent when the action ramps up. If that doesn't bother you then I would have zero hesitation in recommending you watch it. BD is definitely the best format here and well worth the extra cost.

Ye ye. I love this show. Ciarin Hinds, McKidd and Stevenson were all good. As was the female cast.

But I think James Purefoy as Antony stole the show, awesome character. One of my favorites as well.

this show was so, so, so, damn good. Loved it, even the 2nd season which paled in comparison to the 1st. Oh, Rome, how I miss thee...

THIRTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!

Loved the gritty lowlife depiction of otherwise grand Roman society, the fights, the gore and the spontaneous sex with slave girls.

Although I understand Rome was about a particular set of characters (Titus / Lucious etc) - I would have loved to see it continue long after its initial two seasons to tackle some of the characters and dynasties that came afterwards --

I was a big fan of the BBC's classic television series "I, Claudius" and I picked up the Robert Graves book after watching it. Obviously the characters wouldn't be the same as in I, Claudius (thats its own fiction entirely), but I still feel like it could have been cool to explore that... in fact, I'd love for HBO/BBC to revisit that era someday. The freaks, fuck-ups and betrayals that follow on Livia's side up until the reign of Claudius would make compelling viewing.

oh, I remembered one of my favourite scenes in the show... which is a crowning moment of awesome of sorts... (S1 spoiler for those who haven't watched it yet)
when Pullo smashes the head of Eirene's boyfriend on that pillar when he discovers she's already in a relationship. I felt bad about poor Pullo, but DAMN, he really took it to the extreme!

Amazing show, the blu-ray set is beautiful as well. One of the few shows I know that I'll want to rewatch again and again.

Would love to see some of the actors show up in Game of Thrones.

Agreed. Amazing show.

James Purefoy rocked my world, one of my favorite performances in a TV series.

I just finished watching this series myself this past weekend. Really really enjoyed it and I agree, it's a damn shame it was cancelled so early. I'm with you on Antony. I hated him at first but it was really hard to dislike him after seeing where he ended up in Alexandria. I like the fact that you get high and low class affairs in the show, with the story of Caesar/Octavian/Antony and Lucius/Titus.

One of my favorite scenes was
the death of Pullos wife. Not because she died, mind you, but because I don't think I've ever seen the life fade from someones eyes as effectively as in that scene. I felt so bad for Pullo. At least he sort of got his revenge later.

Also, people fucked a lot back then.

I kinda figure A Song of Ice and Fire will suffer a similar fate. No way HBO is gonna be able to handle the cost incurred by the battle at The Wall by the free peoples/Mance Rayder. Giants, Mammoths, Shadowcats an 800ft wall. Puh-lease.

ROME was pretty decent though.

Cancellation was not as disheartening as Carnivale and Deadwood but it really feels that S2 was crammed with too much content. As soon as
Octavius' actor was changed
it goes downward.

Would have loved to see a proper story arc for Brutus, Augustus rise and for Timon in Israel. S1 is near perfect though.

That spoiler was a big WTF moment for me. I thought to myself who the hell is this guy and then he says his name and its like "Oh...".

Blargh. I'd rather Boardwalk suffer this fate over Song of Ice and Fire because while the former has an interesting cast, the show itself nowhere near as compelling as it should be.

And it's also expensive as fuck too.

Hearing what they were planning makes me sad it ended early D:

I discovered halfway through writing the second season the show was going to end. The second was going to end with the death of Brutus. Third and fourth season would be set in Egypt. Fifth was going to be the rise of the messiah in Palestine. But because we got the heads-up that the second season would be it, I telescoped the third and fourth season into the second one, which accounts for the blazing speed we go through history near the end. There's certainly more than enough history to go around.

Damn BBC cheaping out D:

The only thing bad about Rome is that it makes James Purefoy disappointing in every other role, because he's just that awesome as Marc Antony.

Damn I love that show.

Actually, you know I'd love to see a show about Rome that's in Latin - and I don't mean the butchered Latin like they used in Lost - I mean a real to history mix of Vulgar and Classical in appropriate settings.

One of my favourite scenes is:
when Vorenus is running for Senate and they break the fourth wall by acknowledging his lack of Italic physical characteristics and he replies, "I'll not deny it, friend, I have a Gallic look about me but I assure you I'm as solid Roman as you are." What a great line.

oh an Indira Varma is sex

edit

People didn't like Zuleikha Robinson on Lost, but Mmmm in Season 2 on Rome.

it's because of Rome that I hate her in every single thing I've ever seen in her in.

He's wonderful in A Dance to the Music of Time.

+1 for the love of Mark Antony. He's so awesome. One of my favourite scenes was
his death and how he embraces his heritage again. "I died Roman". So good. There's a lot of other memorable moments.

Are they ever going to do this movie they talked about?

My favorite show of all time. I like it even better than Seinfeld.

What's this talk about 3rd season? All the most interesting characters are dead by the end of s2.

Chairman Yang

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
Probably my favourite show of all time; I expect that to continue until Game of Thrones. Season 2 was inconsistent, but had some amazing high points.

I loved them both. Both had great stories, characters, and the actors went above and beyond.
