ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

I actually liked the non 1v1 modes as well, if only because they add some chaos to the mix which is fun for casual play.

Anyone who played Master Mummy got any tips? I figured he'd be the tank and you had to eat hits, guard more often and focus on deflecting punches with his heavier arms, but I had a hard time hitting and avoiding damage, got thrown every time I guarded, and don't get me started on the 3-4 person fights.

Megaton and Rocketter worked best for me. Be agressive, push forward use the Rocketter to pelt little jabs in and then use the Megaton defensively to knock punches away or when you have a clear opening on someone. Know distances and only guard long enough to recover your HP when you a clearly out of range of a throw.

Played a few matches. Game is just as I had feared. It feels too slow, sluggish even. Love the look and the characters are really cool, but not for me :(
Don't know what matches you were playing.....I mean most ppl don't know the controls because it still new. Kinda too early to judge matches right now with a new meta that's about to be born

I believe the system has to still be online in order to ensure the demo times, but you can play with two players on one system in the same lobby (and maybe 1v1 locally without going to a lobby? I'm less sure on that one)

Oh shit! I didn't know this even for the full game. Is it split screen?

Hey so I am at the title screen right now, exploring the help menu. I imagine if I try to play a match, I'll get kicked. So I'm just reading all the tips and tricks

A lot of it devolves into throwing and fast characters like Ninjara spamming dodge right now.

I never felt like the controls were super imprecise but a lot of my punches just didnt do what i wanted.

Nah, I pressed the L & R buttons after the test punch was over and got back into the menu. Wouldn't let me start a match, but I could read the help menu.

Oh! I had put my Switch to sleep in the beginning of the tutorial and got to play through it when I got back and figured getting dropped at the title screen might have been special

2v2 was a lot of fun, but your teammate can really hold you back, no offense at all to any of my teammates. Just most of the time I got hit was because they moved in a way that pulled me back, was an issue of me playing too aggressively and them too defensively. Every time it ended with them dying and me taking out the two opponents. They got focused a lot, atleast they were a bit of a distraction though.
2v2 will probably be way more fun when paired with others who can keep up with what you do.

Ninjara dodges moves is basically his specialty. And did you try curving your punches. The full game has a training mode like mission base that I think will come handy for those that need help to grasp the controls cuz once it clicks with you it's a blast

Had fun with it. Won most of my matches, though unfortunately my score was reset when I got kicked off the connection briefly, and my lucky streak soon ran dry. Sometimes I needed to remind myself of my movement options, and I haven't yet fully utilized most of the characters' mechanics. Thankfully, I did manage to figure out how to shift the lock-on.

So is there a gradient to how much you can curve your punches using motion controls? I could only seem to curve them slightly and I was exaggerating my movements alot.

I'd say a good amount of people don't realize that when they try to punch naturally they're actually not doing a straight punch.

I get the feeling youll see 10 or 20 percent of the playerbase use traditional controls just like with splatoon because of minor imperfections with punching. Even then the splatoon comparison is unfair.

Really enjoyed what I've played so far. Think I prefer the pro controller so far as I find it hard to keep my hands still when fighting, something that evens out the nerves calm down. The 2v2 reminded me a LOT of Gundam EXVS in that you have to watch your ally's movement as well as your opponents, just made for some fun matches. Seemed to get a lot of VBall for my rounds when playing with B00TE, did fairly well in those. Completely sold on the game at this point. All of the modes that were available, win or lose, were just chaotic and just simply fun to play.

Wasn't sure how I felt for the first 20 minutes of playing. Was worried I wasnt going to like it. But damn, I ended up getting really into it. Was playing it 2 player with a friend and whenever we got to do a 2 v 2 it was a BLAST. I actually enjoyed everything but V-Ball. I'm hoping there's a party mode without that one cause I'd be cool with not playing that again.

Bottom line though is that's it a great time. Can't wait for the full release! (And tomorrow's sessions)

had 4 friends over, we decided to split arms up and that ended up being amazing lol

One person would have left arm and the other would have right and it actually worked really well if you were synced up haha

Did you friend enjoy it? Any differences in local online multiplayer? How was split-screen?

Yeah. He felt the same way. Mixed feelings at first, lots of random punching and chaos while we learned the controls. But we kept talking each other through the mechanics as we learned them and ended up having an awesome time. Split screen online is so worth it.

At the end of the session we browsed through the tips in the help, screen and learned a ton. The game is surprisingly deep. Can't wait to try it again now that I have a much better understanding.

I think reactions on this game will continue to be mixed tomorrow while people learn the controls and different mechanics then by Sunday we'll be seeing mostly praise on GAF.

As far as I'm concerned, Nintendo is killing it with Splatoon and Arms.

I think it's also when you initiate a curve and not how much you do it. If you do it early in the punch it should arc more but some arms just naturally arc a lot more then others.

Could you post pics on how you were holding it? I feel like we're missing something here

wow I just looked at the picture online and realized I was holding them wrong.

I was holding it like this:

For some reason I didn't even notice in game the controller was being held to the side.

I swear the in game pic didn't look like that.

Yeah. I held it incorrectly too. The controls don't work unless you have the orientation right.

Unrelated but anyone else feel that this is the most Sega game in years?

Don't feel bad. There were likely tons of people who did exactly what you did and came away believing the motion controls were broken.

Check out the gamexplain stream archive for matches from a guy who has played the game for a while. He also won the tournament at the recent preview event I think. Personally I think people who say the game is too slow just don't know how he game should actually play yet.

Took me around 1 match to get the controls. Feels pretty good overall.
Don't like Helix, though.
Characters like Ribbon girl are probably the best, especially for the volleyball game though I'll probably main Minmin.
The 3-4 player matches are surprisingly not a dumpster fire. 3 free for all is a bit weird especially since people don't know how to change opponents yet (but I do) but it's fun. I think 1 v 1 mode will probably be more serious and likely funner in the long run, but the other modes still seem good.

After around 45 minutes of playing I feel like I'm fairly good at the game so it's easy to understand, but I imagine most people won't give it too much time. "I need my button controls" I heard someone say after like 1-2 matches. At least there's an option, but I'd hope people would be more open to it and stuff like Splatoon

Nah, it'll be closer to 50-60% and probably higher.

BY MY ARMS!

For real though, I wrecked fools with Maatee Mummy, I'll likely try more but it was fun to just corner people with two heavy ARMS, Megaton and the triple one. Dodge and jump if necessary to sneak in a 200 damage grab, heal up when I have to and if they go for a grab then shoot a Megaton before it lands. Landing the super is practically instant death with him.

I think Arms is very different from Splatoon in that regard. In Splatoon, the gyro aiming makes the game a ton better, but in Arms, it doesn't really add much. Movement mapped to a stick, punch arcing is slow and doable with a stick with the same accuracy as the motion controls, guarding mapped to clicking left stick. IMO it's much better with a traditional controller than having to rely on motion controls for so much.

Yeah which is why it will probably be a higher controller to motion control ratio than splatoon was.

I didnt try it with a controller but i will next testpunch.

So volley ball and 3 way fights suck. 2 v 2 is weird and probably doesn't need the stupid leg chain.

1 v 1 seems alright though. Add more characters and arms and I can see it being great.

Still don't understand why so many punches go straight pass an opponent who is standing still, or land very close. Makes me wish I had a reticle to choose where they land. Too often my opponent wouldn't block dodge or jump, yet my punch would just land in front of them or just barely touch and not register.
I could never figure out what made punches go too far or not far enough.

Back to the labs tomorrow

I just could not get the hang of the motion controls. It was also slightly irritating that they throw you into a random party mode carousel, with so many different game settings and modifiers. They really need a dedicated single player tutorial option you can just mess around in for as long as you want.

At the same time, it's cool that they're showing the some of the breadth of options this game will have. Can't wait to give this sucker a try with a real controller in six and a half hours!
