My brother claims people should weigh the pros and cons of being vaccinated?

I had to befriend him from my Facebook.

I showed him this thread and he basically told me I'm an idiot for believing bill nye.

Feels bad man.

I have to wait one more month to get my baby his MMR vaccine and thanks to anti-vaxxers there's been a measles outbreak where I live.

Measles can be fatal for babies.

Your brother and everyone like him can go fuck themselves.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions

That's why it's so important. There are very limited cases where children can't get vaccines for legit reasons. They are dependent on those who do get the vaccine.

I'm sorry if this has been said, but show him the measles outbreak here in MN from stupid anti-vaxers manipulating Somali refugees. They made my kids wear face masks going into the doctor last week because of the chance of catching it. We nearly eradicated this virus and evil people have put all of us at risk for literally no reason.

People like your brother are literally putting the life of my children on the line and I wish I could reach through the internet and slap him silly for it.

"Censorship"?

It has been demonstrated again and again that this false propaganda kills people. Fuck "freedom of speech" if you think it's worth the blood of children.
No one posting here is going to fall for it though. I'd like to see what their specific arguments are so I can have well researched counter arguments ready if this topic ever comes up again online or in real life.

Pros: Being a responsible parent and member of society who protects children and vulnerable people.
Cons: Slightly diminished ability to feel superior to others.

Right, that's what I mean; anyone here outing themselves as overtly anti-vaxxer would most likely be quickly banned regardless. Who is being 'protected' with the edit? It's not the same as removing NSFW shit and the like.

Some of the more interesting posts early in the topic involved people responding to some of the arguments, but after the edit there was nothing to respond to. A "Paul Offit == Jesus and OP's brother == HItler" circlejerk was all that was left after that, and it's not terribly interesting reading.

Do you have to pay for the shots

That would be a con

You have to pay to see the doctor, which is usually where you get the shots. For children there is the Vaccines for Children program, which provides shots for free. The flu shot usually costs a little money, but there are free clinics everywhere.

I don't think you understand what a con is, though.

Babies die because people don't get vaccinated. Fuck those people, and fuck those links. No need to give them the time of day.

Also the vaccination isn't recommended for children under a year old (which is what I'm waiting for). This is a subject that really angers me. I read a story a few months ago, about a woman who lost her 8 month old daughter from measles. She needed someone to watch her for a day and asked a neighbor, but the neighbor hadn't vaccinated her children and the baby was exposed to measles through them.

It's absolutely terrifying.

Even if there was a connection between vaccinations and autism (which I definitely do not believe there is), but even so, I'd hands down rather have an autistic child than a dead one.

Paying is absolutely a negative? How can it not be?

That said, seems like there are programs that makes it free so you literally have no excuse not to take the shots

The only links you need, OP

And this is what it takes to protect you and your children.

Certainly, if he's very understanding and provides his brother with the correct links, everything will be solved and he'll see the light.

That's what people tell me all the time.

Extra pro, by keeping the virus alive you get to kill people who can't get vaccinated due to their specific health reasons.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Pros: Immunity, or near immunity, to deadly diseases for years, decades, or the rest of your life.

Cons:

Pros: Your child is vaccinated against numerous deadly diseases.

Cons: Don't fucking worry about it, get your goddamned children vaccinated.

The really sad part of it is that Google doesn't really provide the info in this manner... searching "do vaccines cause autism" is pretty decent and all the links seemed to be correct. But googling "proof that vaccines cause autism" gives the third link as a "yes they do" answer with a giant list of scientific sources they claim as evidence. The average person isn't going to verify these claims. They'll just accept it as proof of their suspicions. In the same way that I know that vaccines don't cause autism and I am discounting the link as fraudulent without actually verifying any of the sources.

Jeez, let's see:

Vaccination:
Pro: You don't get an almost guaranteed chance that you will be crippled/die from sickness.
Con: One in a gazillion chance you might have a reaction with one of the ingredients, the needles hurt.

I will go with the choice where you won't die or get crippled.

Remember, before vaccines, children used to drop dead like flies.

Make him read this amazing book, full stop.

Look at all those one-star reviews from conspiracy theorists.. These morons should be deported to a remote place where they can hurt no one but themselves.

Anyway, in some countries in the world, like Ukraine for an instance, your child is not allowed into kindergartens without being vaccinated. As vaccines do not always provide 100% protection I think this is the way to go to protect our children. I would even want this to be built into laws.

It's a no brainer of course. These guys who who don't get their kids immunised are putting others at risk too.

Paying is a negative, but it doesn't make it a con. Vaccine manufacturers barely make any money off it, they mostly do it for the public's benefit. Unless the government subsided the vaccines even more than they do already (I'd be for sure cool with that) there's no way vaccine manufacturers wouldn't loose money by distributing them.

I feel he is completely off the mark.

I asked him for proof as to why someone should not get vaccinated aside from obvious medical complications.

Here's his links.

His entire argument is there are pros and cons to taking the vaccine and parents should not be shamed for not giving it to the kids

Tell your brother to never have children. Seriously, not even joking.

Edit: Unless he vaccinates his kids.

People dont know how to argue this stuff. Just tell him that he's not a doctor, you are not a doctor, therefore arguing is useless. Ask a professional doctor. Make him go to 10 different doctors if you have to.

Cons: you're a fucking idiot who might kill their children or other people's children, or the elderly, or vulnerable people like cancer patients.

OK done:

Pros: you get protected from various horrific illnesses that should basically not be an issue any more.

Cons: you get various horrific illnesses that should basically not be an issue any more.

*Im sure this has basically be said a million times already.

This is so out of hand at this point.

It won't happen in Trump's America, but it needs to be made illegal to not vaccinate your kids outside of having one of the specific illnesses that prevent it.

Fuck your free choice when you're putting children as well as everyone around them at risk.

if you rationally weighed the pros and cons, you would get vaccinated every time. but the thing is people who are against vaccinations are irrational so it doesn't matter since they're not going to be honest about it.

its practically impossible to change people's minds on stuff they'll usually just dig their heels in more. the only somewhat effective measure is to tell them to explain their point of view and keep asking them to clarify the reasoning behind it. they have to kind of defeat their own point of view.

I find it difficult to comprehend the fact that anti-vaxxers is a thing...why is it a thing?

Because people are privileged* by not having preventable despises kill them and their children on the regular. Not knowing how much harm not vaccinating is, they have no idea how much harm it is, and instead focus on the nonexistent complications of vaccinations, such as autism and the like (no matter how much evidence there is to the contrary).

*I hate to use that word, especially here. Not dying of preventable diseases is a right, not a privilege, but that's a lot more difficult to describe.
