In Michigan, Trump voters still have the president's back

Four months after the president was inaugurated, those who voted for him in the last election seem little affected by questions over his campaign’s involvement in attempts by Russia to sway the election, a series of missteps on health care reform, a controversial travel order and more.

“He causes a lot of his own problems but I don’t think he’s getting a fair shake,” said Randall Shelton, a 64-year-old independent in Allen Park and self-described “angry white voter” who backed Trump in last year’s election. “As he said, it’s a witch-hunt. He never got a fair shake right from the get-go.”

It’s an opinion that’s easy to find among Trump supporters: He is trying to do what he promised. It’s Democratic obstructionism, biased media reports and, in some cases, even Republican intransigence — mixed with the president’s own idiosyncrasies and inexperience — that is hurting him.

And they seem willing to give him a pass.

Pannebecker argues that the media is mistreating Trump by suggesting through the tenor of its coverage that “this alleged Russia-Trump connection … is the point of the investigation (when) it’s not.” As for the overall Russia investigation, he said he thinks “it’s all laughable” but should play out.

“The support (among Republicans) is rock solid,” said John Wolfsberger, chairman of the Macomb County Republican Party. “I think people are tuning out (the critics). I don’t think people are finding it at all credible. … If anything, it’s making them angry.”

To Wolfsberger and others, that sounds entirely innocent.

“I would interpret that as Trump feeling there was nothing to investigate. …. In any event, he was leaving it to Comey to decide whether or not to end the investigation. I don’t see anything in that phrase that looks remotely like applying pressure.”

“You know, the guy is thinking in the same terms as the everyday, common working guy,” Salcido said. “He talks the same way, he says the same things. … He’s basically mimicking the way that we feel.”

“When we get the perspective (of commentators) on TV, it’s like a whole different world,” he said. “It’s, ‘what are they talking about?’ It’s not like that here.”

“Nobody's giving him a chance other than the people who actually like him,” said MaryAnn Simon, an 82-year-old Trump supporter in Harrison Township. “I think he's a good man and he's accomplishing a lot but nobody seems to care. He always gets the bad end of the deal.”

Some hope.

A poll done by EPIC-MRA of Lansing of likely Michigan voters last week shows results consistent with the trend: Thirty-five percent gave Trump a positive job rating, down from 39% in February. Those giving him negative marks went from 56% to 61%.

Republican support wasn't as strong as it is nationally — 67% gave him favorable ratings compared with 29% that said he's doing only fair or poorly — but it's still a clear majority of GOP voters. Ninety-two percent of Michigan Democrats gave him a negative job rating, as did 54% of independents. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

“You know, the guy is thinking in the same terms as the everyday, common working guy,” Salcido said. “He talks the same way, he says the same things. … He’s basically mimicking the way that we feel.”

If common working men are like Trump's almost daily idiocy...lol

He could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot someone live on tv and he wouldn't lose any voters.

there is so much noise in this age of information that people have shut down

hell my head is spinning from Neogaf Topics

Its insufferable that ignorance has gripped people so tightly that they cant let go. Something crazy is happening in this country and its like nothing i have ever seen before

Yeah...the investigation is laughable. Not credible at all. Multiple intelligence agencies here and around the globe, with employees who have spent a lifetime in intelligence, think there might have been meddling and possibly collusion. But you...you who only watch Fox News and look at Facebook...YOU know better than that. Fucking morons.

I know we all wish that the folks who voted for him would just wake the fuck up already, but it's still worth pointing out that dude's only been President for four months. Yeah, it's felt like a lifetime to all of us, but a lot of his constituents are still very much in the "give him a chance" phase or are of the mind that he's not being treated fairly and none of his constant fuck-ups are his fault. Also, four months isn't nearly enough time for his supporters to become affected by his terrible policies.

They'll probably continue to feel this way for a couple of years, so strap in.

The cult of stupidity persists, of course it does. It's basically a religion now where no matter what the facts tell them, they will continue to believe.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
"Wah you're not giving him a chance wah!"
People gave him a chance, multiple times. Every time he grabbed it, violently threw it on the ground, set it on fire, then took a dump on it.

modern societies have to good

its the same problem we had before and couldnt get voters to turn out in the first place

we can afford yo be so caught up in out own lives that taking civic duty seriously is a burden

what an embarassment. Trump should have never made it past the primaries

I'm convinced this is literally an Onion article.

His gibberish is not much different than his incomprehensible stump speeches during the campaign. His voters have never been deterred by his idiocy. They voted for walls and travel bans and nebulous America first bullshit and as far as they are concerned, he's trying goddammit.

Let them burn and focus on bringing in more voters. Trump voters are people who need to experience his policies. Saw that here in Louisiana in the last governors race.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
there's no political campaign you can run to win over these people if you're a Democrat

they're too deep down the Fox News hole

A) It's four months. No one is going to admit to themselves, much less a pollster, that they're having second thoughts this soon.

B) Doesn't matter whether they "still support" him, it matters whether they're enthused enough to vote next year and 2020.

Bottom line you can hate the media and Democrats and think they're all out to get Trump and still think "ehhhh can't be assed" on Election Day because your life hasn't magically improved yet.

its absolutely disgusting how far a good chunk of the public have fallen

Trump being a disaster of a president was obvious from the get go but all he had to do was say the magic words to shithole conservatives.

Now they refuse to believe this failure and con man is a bad president

mother fucks.... a duck is a damn duck

Also this. Bring in new voters and get back those who have been suppressed. Winning people "over to our side" was difficult 30 years ago and nigh on impossible now without material results, and even that's sketchy

...which is why you don't take the seat at the oval office to run it based on "feelings" you dipshit.

Why do you think the president has all these sources of intelligence and all these people reporting to him/her multiple times a day?? So that OBJECTIVE decisions can be made about what course of action that can be taken that will potentially affect the lives of literally hundreds of millions of people.

The things I don't understand are this:
1. WHAT has he done such a good job at? He hasn't actually done anything. His biggest move was his executive order that got shot down and a health care bill that won't make it out of the Senate.
2. Democrats control NO branch of government! They can't obstruct you! The GOP could pass a law tomorrow that says all black people have to bow when a white person walks near them and that shit ain't getting struck down until it gets to the supreme court. Like the fact they think the minority party in all branches of government is obstructing means they have no clue how incompetent and weak Trump really is.

Which is good. If they had a person in office who wasn't a moron there could be even worse issues.

Education education education

That probably the best solution for moderates and people still on the fence but these people man, these people.

Short of the heavenly father coming down himself and calling trump a dick, they wont change their minds. Shit they might try to defend him at that moment too.

Yeah I should be clearer: I think poor education is what allows so many people to reach this point in the first place. I don't think we can solve it but it would almost certainly help there be less of them

Sure, the guy who shits on a gold toilet and wants to cut your kid's public school funding totally feels your pain.

"Democratic Obstructionism"? The Republicans don't need a single Democrat vote to pass anything right now, they control all three branches!

It's no surprise, but these people are too far gone. They think they represent "real" America, whatever that is, but they're living in a fantasy world, and not even one that benefits them. It's morbidly bizarre.

Over the past ten years, Michigan has been taken over by Tea Party right-wingers. The state is flooded with them. Most places in the state north of Grand Rapids are rural, and Detroit's population has continued to fall, so the state turning into a red state isn't surprising in the least.

Michigan is facing serious brain drain. The economy wasn't great for years and a LOT of skilled graduates took off for greener pastures.

I'll never understand how anyone can interpret Trump as being like the every day man. Nothing in his life even remotely comes close to it. He just happens to talk like an idiot....and is one.

I never really find a lot of value in these sorts of articles. It feels like we get one every week. "Trump supporters in X location still support him after Y story leaked." Then a bunch of mini interviews with people who still like him. So? Even if his approval dropped to 10%, you could fill an entire article with people saying the same thing. Even at 1% you would have tons of people to choose from. What is the value in writing another article reminding us that there still exists at least one Trump supporter? We don't need to wait for every Trump voter to turn against him. We just need some more.

I'm not even sure what I'm complaining about here, honestly. I guess it's fine to write these articles, they just seem like a way to make people get mad in an unhelpful way.

"From all the polling I’ve seen, the Trump voters are pretty happy,” said Lansing political consultant John Truscott. “There’s no surprise here. He’s doing exactly what he said he would do during the campaign.”

I just don't understand this. He's failing miserably in this area.

I'm really bored of these articles by now. Every week we see a new one and are suppossed to act surprised.

Trump voters are racist morons. His base will stick with him no matter what. They are idiots. They don't matter. They aren't the people who swung at the last minute in his favour, and they won't decide the next election.

Anyone who describes themself as an 'angry white voter' just isn't even worth bothering with. You aren't *ever* persuading those people to change. Let's remember over 50% of republicans thought Nixon shouldn't resign two days before he did. We just have to accept part of the party will support their leader no matter what, and move on. Let's stop pretending this is somehow new, or newsworthy, or should impact on strategies or planning in any way other than 'how do we counter these racists'.

I wish that before releasing the "grab em by the pussy" tape, that they reported on it from sources. Just so I could have seen trump deny everything up to the point of the tapes release, where he would have had to admit to the lie. He has to be caught red handed essentially for anyone to accept he's a liar.

Who am I kidding. Even if caught red handed the media would be accused of framing him and planting evidence. Literally nothing that can be done to combat pure fanatical stupidity.

Yeah you can put any Republican's name there and there will be those who have the same sentiments. To a lot of people all that matters is the party someone is associated with. Democrats really have to focus on turning out. Post 2016 it seems we are still failing to reach our potential.

Of course that only applies to a state like Michigan, not in Idaho, etc.

Let them burn and focus on bringing in more voters. Trump voters are people who need to experience his policies. Saw that here in Louisiana in the last governors race.

The problem is that they're so genuinely stupid that they'll still believe it was the democrats who ruined their lives.
