Can someone please explain to me Fox's obsession with the Alien franchise? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that they are so committed to trying to make one of my favorite franchises work, even if they keep failing, but GOOD GOD. Is there any other film franchise that has gotten this many do-overs and relaunch attempts after so many failures? Some big wig up top must REALLY love the first two...

I'm more shocked that they keep fucking up a franchise with the best monster design in the history of film. Like, making a movie with xenomorphs bad / perform poorly at the BO seems like it should be tough...

In retrospect, Ridley has been having a downtrend in terms of both critically and box office-wise for sometime now. Remember Robin Hood, Exodus, or say the Counselor? Really makes the Martian seem like a fluke really.

At least The Counselor had that one really.... memorable? scene.

If it doesn't get killed by Wonder Woman next weekend, it looks like Guardians has a good chance at hitting $375M+ now. The 4-Day Memorial Day weekend should be at least $5M higher than Civil War's last year. Civil War made another $30M after this weekend.
Its weekend holds have been good, and its dailies have been slightly over/under AoU's (not like that was a good example of legs, but it did open ~$45M larger), so if it keeps it up I expect it to end around $385M.

I agree, I think the title will automatically make some people ignore it.
Pretty much, I was ignoring it until I found out it was an Edgar Wright film.

It likely cost way more than that going by what we ended up knowing about 4's budget.
I'm still surprised by 4's budget. I know that most say the cause is due to filming at sea and building ships being expensive, but the movie itself only had 2 ships, and one was in 2 scenes only (and the other one in like 3 maybe? can't remember). Made sense for the other ones which had plenty of ships and sea stuff, but not that one.

I wonder how much of the budget for PotC 4 & 5 went into preproduction. Those movies took some time to come out (2007-2011, 2011-2017).

Maybe they kept starting over.

Can someone please explain to me Fox's obsession with the Alien franchise and pumping out more films after so many flops and/or bad ones?

Recognizable brand, recognizable monster, tied to the best horror film ever made and one of the best action films ever made.

They're always going to go back to it. Sure, it might take 7-10 years between failures, but they will ALWAYS return to it.

Have you seen the Halloween series? No? Because that has like, ten movies to it.

Also, all those public domain monster movies yet they leave the good stuff to Disney as if they 'own' those public domain fairy tails now. Why not just make your own Cinderella movie if you're that desperate for a hit?

Clearly, Matt Damon is Ridley Scott's secret weapon.

Get on that Jason Bourne vs. Alien vs. Predator script I sent you, Ridley!

more like Vangelis. Matt Damon + Vangelis in Forever War, directed by Ridley Scott? ...no?... Old Man's War then?

Pumping out? They've made 8 films in the Aliens franchise, two of them being crossovers and one of them not even having Alien in the title.

I think Fox has been rather conservative with the Alien franchise.

^^^ Eh, the Halloween movies are different. They have such a low overhead that it doesn't hurt to keep trying. Whereas Alien films are pretty expensive to make.

I'd say
4's budget = full production issues.
5's = pre production, full production & post while just being an expensive movie in general.

4 was absolutely set up as a budget sequel.
1 physical ship had any screentime and that was a ship they had from 1-3(Black Pearl) made over.
filmed in Florida and Hawaii vs small Caribbean islands.
no crazy CG or ship battles.
smaller scale.

Wait, PotC 5 took more time than KH3 and FFVIIR? Man.

In those terms
KH2 released the same year in North America as POTC2 in 2006,
Birth By Sleep released in 2009, 2 years before POTC4.
POTC5 just released and KH3 release is still nowhere in in sight.

In other words I was 15 when I played KH2, im closing in on 30....
Hurry the hell up Square Enix.

3day Weekend estimates

1) Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - $62.2M
2) Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - $19.9M - $333M total
3) Baywatch - $18.1M - $23M total
4) Alien: Covenant - $10.5M - $57M total

WW totals

Beauty and the Beast - $1233M
Fate of the Furious - $1224M
Guardians of the Galaxy - $783M
Pirates 5 - $271M

Official second weekend (3-day) estimate for Alien Covenant is $10.5M. Down 71%

(low whistle)

I haven't seen Alien Covenant myself, but between the forum reaction and BO, I was surprised to see reviews were mostly positive.

Was it really that bad? I've never seen any Alien movie so I can't be a good barometer for em

I don't think it was really that bad. I think it was better than Prometheus. But being better than Alien 3 & Prometheus isn't exactly the bar this movie apparently needed to clear.

I also think the movie really does play better if you don't really give a fuck about the Alien series outside of "scary monster gonna kill ya." If you care even remotely about anything beyond that superficial level (and a lot of people will - and should) there will be disappointment.

I hope we still get one more Alien film so whatever the hell Ridley is trying to do can be closed up.

It'll happen.

Um, but doesn't this 2nd week crater prove that many people DO care about more than just cheap scares?

The second weekend is playing like a horror franchise with a substantial built in fanbase, but little interest outside of said fanbase.

Edit: Look at the Friday thr 13th and Nightmare on Elmstreet remakes for other examples.

I'm going to assume 2017 is The Year of Everything Bobby Likes Underperforming

Lego Batman
Alien
I swear if you go after Atomic Blonde or Wonder Woman you're mine

It'll happen.
I'm not convinced. Of all the major studios studios, Fox seems the most conservative and a direct Covenant followup would probably make $40M domestic. It'd be the lowest grossing film of the series.

At the very least, I think it wwould be a very different film from what Scott has envisioned currently.

You can say it sunk like a Rock.

Don't tell that to The Rock....

Yeah those Alien numbers are really really poor. Wasn't Scott planning on this being a trilogy? Because I'm really not sure that 3rd film will happen unless it gets a very conservative budget
