Lines Snaked Through Entire Park for Disney's Guardians of the Galaxy Ride Debut

Last day of your vacation, everything else is completely done and you might not be back for a long time...
it would be acceptable

Its very silly but not completely stupid.

Last day of my vacation I'd be even less inclined to spend standing in a queue all day.

There's honestly very little I can think of that I would want to do less than this

As I edited in,
Waiting just for the Guardians theme alone is stupid but what if the person has never been on Tower of Terror(one of the greatest theme park attractions) or like most people won't be returning soon(years)

Not saying I would in this case but I understand.
I know I would do it if Star Wars Land happened to open during my Disney trip.

I hope they bring this over to FL soon, would be awesome to have a Guardians ride AND the Star Wars section in one park.

I just want to say again that the quote in the OP makes it sound like it was often a 5-7 hour wait when it wasn't. I watched the queue from noon to midnight and only saw it at 300 minutes once for a short period. It was mostly 120-180 minutes and even as low as 100 minutes.

I hope they bring this over to FL soon, would be awesome to have a Guardians ride AND the Star Wars section in one park.
As someone who has been on both WDW/DL ToT and Guardians Breakout, I can say that without a doubt you don't. The WDW ToT is perfect.

In general, the less Marvel and Star Wars infects classic WDW/DL, the better. Gaurdians can have Rock'n Rollercoaster if they want.

It will likely be that way for a few weeks, most people can't just say "oh well I will come all the way back in 4~ weeks to ride just that".
I know if they opened Star Wars Land during my planned vacation there next summer, i'd literally do everything else possible and then brave the lines.

Waiting for the Guardians theme alone is stupid but that assumes everyone has already been on Tower of Terror.
You could just leave the park and do something else.

That don't have the rights to do this in FL. Universal owns them.

The more Marvel and Star Wars infect Disney Hollywood Studios the better. I recently went and the Star Wars stuff, while pretty limited right now, was my favorite part. Topping it off with a Guardians ride would be great.

I haven't been to Disney World in like eight years. Maybe I can talk my GF into going. It will be weird without kids or a huge group, I guess, but I wanna try this new ride and the new Star Wars and Harry Potter stuff (that's all there too, right?).

All this for a cheap reskin of a 20 year old ride...

Hopefully the GotG don't take over any of the other towers, the story/theming of the Hollywood Tower Hotel is super appealing to me and manages to send spook me everytime. Rocket and Groot will never be able to replace the eerie unease of the Twilight Zone

Is that what this ride is? The Simpsons ride at Universal was disappointing for that very same reason.

This ride is Disney California Adventure
Star Wars Land won't be opened till about 2019
Harry Potter is Universal Studios.

Its completely normal for people without kids.

Not exactly sure what you mean with the Tower of Terror?

As for people not coming back for some years and wanting to try out a cool new attraction, I get that. I just think 5/7 hours standing in line is complete madness for a ride that's probably around 5 minutes.

No thank you.

WDW ToT is the peak of Imagineering and shouldn't be altered.

They do according to WDW1974 at WDWMagic (the one who leaked this in the first place).

A lot of people (like my dad) romanticize the idea of someday telling their kids "you know, I was one of the first people to ride _____ the day it opened!" He lovessss getting to say crap like that and hearing our "oh cooool dad..." haha

It's passing on to me too, I'm noticing. I once got out of bed and left my house in the middle of the night when I saw on twitter that the new San Francisco Bay Bridge opened early. I drove down to the freeway entrance and there were hundreds of cars lined up to get on the freeway cuz they also heard the news. And now I get to say "hey Sonny Jim did u know I was one of the first civilians to drive on this here bridge?" "No grandpa, that's sooo lit thooo"

Universal owns all of the theme park rights for marvel properties south of the Mississippi. As long as they maintain their rides they hold the rights. Disney will never be able to build anything marvel related in their theme parks in WDW.

Also, the thought of ruining the Tower of Terror in both American parks is disgusting. Especially the one at WDW, that thing is a tour de force in theming and execution. Leave it alone.

I visited Florida last summer (from the UK) and got to ride Tower of Terror a couple of times for the first time ever in the Orlando park. Pretty sad they were changing it into GotG tbh. Rips the soul out of a great ride.

Just glad I got to ride it and had somehow gone 27 years on this planet without knowing quite what happened on the ride, so it was all an awesome surprise.

Bought loads of cool twilight zone x disney cups and stuff to commemorate as I knew I'd never get the chance again.

ToT in Orlando is staying as is, so you will be able to revisit it again.

Really? I thought they were both being made into Guardians? When I was there they were running the ride at nighttime with all the lights turned off and you went like 3 or 4 times instead of 1, as a 'send off' to the ride.

Yeah, Disney can't use marvel properties at their Florida parks. Universal locked up those rights in the 90s. It's still open and operational, just went on it about a month ago. Also the ride cycles between a ton of different ride variations at the Orlando version, so you probably had a normal experience. It's just a cool ride like that

I guess people merged the news of the California ride into the Orlando ride. If you google tower of terror orlando you get loads of Orlando news websites talking about it shutting down, getting ready for the last ride etc.

But anyway, thanks! You're a bearer of good news, would have been a shame to ruin such a great bit of ride history!

Been to Orlando twice in 5 years and it was up there as one of my favourites easily. (Mummy at Universal takes the top spot for me!)

Stuff like this is why I kinda avoid most touristy things

Like my Italy trip I did the Colosseum and all that, it took a while but was ok. But when I went to Capri on a boat tour, everyone wanted to see the Blue Grotto, but it was going to take 3+ hours to do it, cost 40 euro, and only be there for like 4 minutes, so I passed

Yeah this was a huge problem when the news first broke, everyone running around making misinformed predictions and posting blogs with nothing to back it up. I have to imagine it's happening again with the California ride opening now. It also doesn't help that the Orlando park is called Hollywood Studios and probably contributed to the idea.

On the one hand, im mad at universal for doing nothing with the marvel rights since they opened IOA, but on the other they are preventing the conversion of ToT here.

Yeah IOA feels a little dated now. Going two times in a row, the Marvel section doesn't really make any use of the cinematic universe. Could definitely retrofit some of those rides like Spiderman. Swap Dr Doom out for something better etc.

They even revamped the Hulk IIRC but was basically just a fresh coat of paint.

They updated Spider-Man with some great hd screens a few years back, and the hulk was a full rebuild with new parts. So they are at least keeping it maintained well. I just wish they'd either retheme it or build something new with their god tier Harry Potter team. They blew Disney out of the water with Diagon Alley, if they could do a new marvel area it would probably be insane.

I have to imagine it's a messy situation with the rights though. Back in the day they did a super villain theme where they took over the island and killed all of the super heroes for Halloween horror nights, and marvel got pissed and took them to court, so they probably have final say in projects or some amount of approval over everything. Disney will never let that happen now hahaha

You're incorrect that IOA is preventing ToT from being reskinned, the terms of the contract are that Disney can't use any of the characters Universal used in Marvel Island. So Spiderman, the Hulk, all the X-men, etc. are all off limits, but the Guardians of the Galaxy were never used, even as part of merchandise, so Disney can do whatever they want with them. The rumor going around is that the GotG will be moving into Epcot replacing Ellen's Energy Adventure with some big new E-ticket.

Supposedly there are certain families of Marvel characters that are fair game for Disney. Mostly (previously) unknown properties like the GotG. That's why Disney is pushing them hard because they control them 100%, including in theme parks which is an important part of the marketing machine. Guardians have already shown up at WDW in the form of meet & greets back when the first film debuted and even now with a Star-Lord and baby Groot.

This is some interesting stuff, I hadn't heard this before. Rumors are rumors though, we will see what happens. Last I talked with a universal engineer family friend, Disney couldn't do anything marvel related, but that was several years ago when the mcu started really blowing up. Not sure where meet and greets fall under use. But if they can use them for that, I would have to assume they could use them for rides

Anything over 90 minutes is a hard pass. Tickets are too expensive to waste that much time standing in line for 1 ride.
That's tricky, you spent money on the ticket but the rides all have 60 minute plus waits. Are you just going to walk around the park and hope the lines die down, or do you take the hit in time to actually get your money's worth?

I'm with you, but I always think about that. Whenever I go to Halloween Horror Nights the lines for the bigger houses get to about 120 minutes, and I always hard pass, but this year we went through American Horror Story when it was 80 minutes, and loved it. We went straight into walking dead which had previously been 120 when we went into AHS and was now only 20 because the park was closing and it was the most aggressively bad haunted house I have ever walked through. People actually waited upwards of two hours to get into a shitty house that was shorter than most of the others. It's such a roll of the dice waiting in long lines.

Just following up on this, I didn't realize the contract was out in the open. Paraphrasing here; It does state that east of the Mississippi they own the rights for characters within the families they are using, however it also states that no marvel property shall be used for any marvel themed rides within a 60 mile radius of islands of adventure. This would explain why they are able to do meet and greets, but rides are never going to happen for any property. It also explicitly states that marvel simulator experiences shall not be used in this same radius. It's a bummer but it is what it is. Contract runs for perpetuity as long as Universal keeps everything in good shape and pays their fees.

The damn Spider-Man ride is still based on the 90s cartoon. Disney could be doing so much cool shit with the Marvel dudes but it's all being wasted on the crappy Universal rides.

There are strategies to getting the most out of theme parks. It's a mix of going at the best times and using fastpass. Even in the busy seasons, it makes a huge difference to be there before park opening. People have actually figured out what the crowd size will be on a specific day at the park going by historical records. I've gone to WDW during the week between Christmas and New Year's, and managed to go on every ride I wanted multiple times. It's exhausting, but really fun.

Spider-Man and Hulk are legit two of the best rides in the country. The area needs an update, but those rides are perfect. Doom needs to be replaced and the storm tea cups. They could expand the area with some more recent properties per the terms of the contract apparently, and as long as it is 'reasonable', Disney cannot stop them. I have to imagine they are in the final planning stages of a full overhaul now that the Hulk renovation is done.

So not worth it
As I edited in,

Unless the ride ended with either the best meal or best sex of my life, I'd still pass like no tomorrow.

Nothing is worth standing in line seven hours for, other than the two aforementioned things.

What the fuck? The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man is one of the most kick ass theme park attractions out there. It doesn't need to be tied to the MCU or whatever to be as great as it is. I doubt Disney would be able to make a Spiderman themed ride nearly as good or innovative as what Universal created.

In general I honestly don't mind the 'outdated' style of Marvel Super Hero Island. I think it makes for a rather interesting time capsule in a way, a relic of an era before the MCU took off.

EDIT: Here's a informative article regarding Marvel, Universal and Disney: http://orlandounited.com/2016/05/darn-marvel-contract/
